Pioneers Of Northern Soul On The Radio Back Then

Saw a name this morning that reminded me of the early days when any northern spun on the radio would be a very rare occurrence.Mostly confined to a 10 minute slot on a 'regular' soul show on local radio and mainly up north, Radio Merseyside, Radio Lancashire, Red Rose and Piccadily.

My own memories revolve around Keep on Truckin' Terry Lennaines soul&funk show on Radio Merseyside in the early 70s Nick Cowan used to bring a few northern sides each week for a northern spot. Terry helped out by getting a few of the UK releases from the BBC radio library (all UK demos) I can well remember the sleeves.

Any one got any tales of their own local radio heroes.

Not particularly Northern but Mike Ravens soul show was the first I remember, the show that started with King Curtis's, Soul Serenade. I think it might have been before radio one was formed and broadcast early Sunday evening, I was only young at the time. The show made a comeback in the early 70's, Sat tea time? Ade

Twas 'Soul Seranade' but was the UK Mike Cotton Sound version on UK MGM,and very good it sounded as well!!

Yes remember that one, Emperor Rosko saturday dinner time used to play loads of Atlantic stuff sure I heard Here I go Again on his show.

Even before that, I have a Rosko show from 1969 where he plays the (then deleted) Just A Little Misunderstanding and introduces it as "the biggest discotheque record of the moment".

I've got stacks of Mike Raven shows on reel to reel.

There was a saturday night soul show on local west mid radio early 70's with a guy called Nicky Steele, he had the dj's from Wigan casino on one saturday

I've always that it was the Beau Dollar and the Coins version that was played as an introduction to the show!! Wrong again, lol!!!

Personally my fave version anyway.

Andy Peebles Soul Train on Piccadilly on Fridays and Sundays. I have a stack of tapes somewhere....often brought Richard and Russ in as a guests.

I also have a vague memory of a bloke on Radio Manchester who went under the moniker of The Baron from the BBC who used to sometimes do a Northern segment and I think there was someone on Radio Blackburn ?Trevor Hall? maybe. It's all a bit of a blur.....

I did a year living in Merseyside in 76-77 and Terry Lennaine was pretty good on Radio Merseyside. He used to do a club in Birkenhead I went to a few times but I can't recall the name.

Before Richard Searling hit Radio Hallam (Sheffield) for the 1st time around 1980, there was a Saturday evening soul show (might have been presented by Kelly Temple but it was an 'everyday' Hallam DJ who had this one soul show each week). Anyway, he always had a NS spot, the records (about 3 each week I seem to recall) were provided by Worksop DJ / collector / dealer Pete Ward.

Many years earlier (1973/4-ish), Hallam had a specialist guy on who always had a NS show but I think he bought a record shop in Worksop & went off to run that.

Notably though he used to do a call to the US every week to the R&b Stations for their top spins of the time-one of the DJs, whose name kinda stuck---E.Rodney Jones.

And yes obviously Andy Peebles Soul Train on Piccadilly Radio, later taken over by Mike Shaft.

Great thread, Kegsy.. Yes Mike Raven was one of my early influences regarding soul music..with the Mike Cotton Sound. Used to listen to Rosko, who was a Stax / Atlantic man, at work on a Saturday morning overtime if I had managed to get there after friday night !

Mike Raven was a Sunday evening if I recall correctly.

I'm sure he quit the radio stn show when he bought a record shop in Woksop.

I read somewhere that Mike Cotton recorded his version at Mike Raven's suggestion. He may have played Beau Dollar prior to this.

Yes listening to the early 1970s pirate/radio stations were an essential guide to what was good and up and coming in the soul music world-i used to tune in most friday nights to a Radio Luxembourg radio show, I think it was called Black Friday??? a great way to here uptempo Northern soul type records...looking back i use to sit there for over 2 hours tuned into this show on one of the oldest wireless transistor radio sets that you have ever seen, the reception was hit and miss always fading in and out [ususally on a track that you hadnt heard before and always when the Disc Jockey was announcing the titles]..... great times for sure...

Don't forget the Radio Luxembourg specials in I think 75. I am sure they did two 3 hour specials. I have them on tape somewhere, courtesy of Dewi from Burnley, now Adelaide!
