We have seen Kev Roberts post on here for quite a while now and so so many don't dig his thing,Kev looks at the money side everytime when posting, that drives him(he is a big time promoter)..Others are looking at different aspects..The likes of Stevie Z,Quinvy and many others on here are on seperate planets to Mr Roberts..Like you said, vote with your feet..Kev said no person would want to see the scene go underground with only 500 or so at rare soul nights around the country, thats what a lot on here would like to see it i'm sure.Kev is thinking about money and numbers all the time, thats ok because big promoters should do that, its business,a really underground soul scene would not make him any cash and thus he would never want that..We have many different people on here, some want events with 2,000 there and others would be happy with a dedicated 100 or less..

Its the really tacky commercial side of the scene that gets to a lot of people,i think you can promote large and small events without treating us like fools or xmas shoppers at Crazy George, some adverts for soul nights are like the junk mail that comes through the door, all colour gloss adverts with no soul at all...They say the best, the biggest, the longest etc etc..We aint fools and are not taken in by this type of promo,we have brains and hearts and feelings, all that these type of promos lack...I think most people i know on soul-source are educated people(Apart from Sheffield boys :D )and don't just "sign on the dotted line",they think about what they are signing...Like i said before Mr Roberts and Stevie Z plus others will never agree because they are looking at the scene from different places..Everytime Kev posts on here he will get get some negative feedback because some see him as the devil :D ,others hold him in high regard for putting on the large events that they love..That aint ever gonna change..Like Dave said...You go where you wanna go and enjoy..Don't be one of these people who goes to an event that you don't like and then just sits there moaning, stay away from there and leave it to those who want that...

I go where i wanna go and stay away from places i don't find to my taste..Its that easy...I think the problem is with some promoters is that they never go to places that they don't promote or have some financial interest in..The scene is about getting out there and supporting each other,if you never set foot in a place and expect them all to come along like sheep to your event then you aint in touch..If Kev and some others just walked into any of the smaller nights out there on the scene and just sat back with mates and had a beer then he would get much better feedback..I judge a night on the music and type of person, quality before quantity but that does not mean i would keep going to an event with great music and no people,i need the buzz also from the dancefloor etc..Some peoples buzz is how much cash they have made only, thats not soul...If you have respect for people and are a decent person then you can get both,a good crowd, nice atmosphere and make some cash :):D ,thats a fantastic night aint it..

ps I hope to meet Mr Roberts sometime soon for the first time..I have been on this scene for many many years and we have never met..I would like to see if he really does have horns :D ..Drinks on you Mr Roberts,i know you have a bob or two :D

some good points stevie. i too would like to see all of the big promoters turning up at the small nights too. i have said this all along.

any idea where you can buy a nut cutlet without feeling embarassed?

those checkout ladies can be so cruel at times.

true story......

i remember a mate a few years back who wanted to cook a special meal for his new girlfriend. he was useless but really wanted to make the effort. he needed some 'leeks' for this particular dish he was about to create. he was browsing the fruit and veg section in Asda when he stumbled upon some 'baby leeks'. he thought yes they are more expensive but so what - this is a special occassion.

when he arrived at the checkout, the old dear with the blue rinse said to him with real concern "you do know that these aren't 'spring onions?'

:D

i love that story :D

Hi Kev,

Some very good points well put there, but, didn't you make your name originally by being at the cutting edge of this scene. You had the records that the others didn't, and the rest, as they say is history. The thing that frustrates so many of us Kev, is that we struggle to get punters to our upfront nights. Yet you have 1000+ listening to the same old playlist. Jealousy, envy? I don't think so. I just want to share my passion for this music with like minded individuals. I feel that if we don't offer something fresher, more exciting, then people will get fed up and leave the scene. That's just my opinion Kev, you are obviously one of, if not, THE, number one promoter on this scene. But how long will there be a scene?

All the best to you and your's, Phil.

Hey Phil--Good call. And thanks for the praise. Again I wish to emphasise the need for the Lifeline's, Greatstones, Wilton's etc . The passion and commitment of you guys is top notch.

But seriously mate, the bulk of Soulies today are bathed in nostalgia and want a good time. Unfamiliarity is a minority. I admire the No More Doggin type gigs, as I do a local Motown night. It means someone, somewhere risked an investment to put something on.

AT LEAST WE ALL HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO!

Feel sorry for the Glam Rockers of the 70's who have found their scene frozen out....by NORTHERN SOUL!

northern soul is not all about oldies...as myself i enjoy to listen to the old tunes cos they give me such great memories. but i have also been listening to the likes of the new and up and coming d.js jamie, richie, brett, joe, stevie, john may, along with lady d.js doing the odd spots here and there and i like what im hearing. im an old casino die hard and loved Mr.Ms but still like to hear new tunes.....its just good to know that eventually the baton will be past to a new generation of soulies who will keep this music going hopefully long after we have fell off this planet

Stevie,

I did enough small gigs in the 70's working every week for 10-20 quid. You make very good points and Shane is no doubt working on a potent 'under played oldies' cocktail, to inject into me when I see him at our beloved Hillsborough.

I aim to visit the Greatstone, Wilton and Doggin' next year. I may be 'under cover' with a false moustache and beard. My head may be shaved as to look like my business colleague Richard Searling!

I will be easy to spot though, my sales box will contain Black Magic and Casino Classics 45'sbiggrin.gif(couldn't believe the prices on some of my old labels like Destiny in JM's new British price guide!)

Merry X and all that.

Merry Christmas one and all,it's very simple have a ball ! .....................remember this scene is for life not just for Christmas, do what you do, enjoy, collect, play, dance to be it retro nostalgia or underground, it's the music, pure, beautiful and oh so good, and lastly it started in Detroit and not Wigan despite what some might say......without the music there would be no debate!........'It's a feeling' to the bone...i'm gonna play a few tunes now, go on do the same...it makes you feel good don't it?

Trust you to pick hairs........lol i think you know what i mean, basically the music came first we as a scene embraced it and the bottom line with all this is we are all involved in this soulful journey because of basically the common ground of loving the music whatever the style, era or level, we all don't get on or share the same views but that's life and to be fair to the top 500 records comments i think if you sat down and made a list it would be a far greater number of records than 500 considered classic, played out, well known oldies call them what you will, this scene is based on nostalgia due to the very nature of it's music.

Acceptance of the unknown's, lesser played should be respected as should the oldies thing, basically whatever floats your boat is on offer nationwide, something for everyone, the problem is that often opinion and tempers flare and this 'who knows best' attitude is the catalist of bad feeling as this thread would suggest, live and let live i say, i'm proud to be part of this scene and refuse to see it be destroyed by opinion's, if an event, promotion, music policy, style is of a quality then in time the genuine soul fans will attend, so there is really no need to hype events............we all have the right to do what we want, say what we feel and play what we want, negative vibe's just stir things up and get's everyone's backs up, it's just not that nice when it get's personal and i suggest that there are hidden agenda's in some of the comments which has little or nothing to do with the scene or the music.

Keep the comments constructive and if you have a personal beef with someone perhaps it's best to take it off this site and maybe into the car park.......now back to the Christmas food thingy.

It's called having a 15 yr old daughter that got "into" soul through me and then has "expanded" her "soul tastes" upto present day.... every other "home made CD" she fetches home now has "a few" I know from the "modern scene".... she hates me telling her I know it :D .... means I hear her "skip" that one when she's playing it.... lots of "niche", "gatecrasher", "creamfields" etc., stuff she gets done from the "soulful rooms/arenas" that has "our plays" on them.... I take that as a "compliment" for taste :D ....

Merry Christmassy to you Roger :) ....

Sorry but one of my pet hates is for people to presume that all new soul music is the shite that is played on MTV. I've seen it plenty of times on here, if you have a different take on it, fair enough but I can guarantee that you won't hear 99% of the new soul music I and my peers buy in high street clubs up and down the country every weekend, which is what you said. With the occasional exception, the stuff that makes the charts and gets played in the clubs is shite for the most part and as far removed from the vast amount of genuine quality SOUL music made today as it's possible to be.

You'll be trying to tell me that a record made in the 70s is modern, next!! :D:D:)

Sounds to me that your 15 year old daughter is clued up and opened minded about her music :) Seems like she has good contacts as some of the Vinyl, CDRs and MP3s are hard to get hold of :D Any chance of a playlist ?

Well I'm thinking of the one that goes "if this isn't love, I don't know what is" repeat ... "I have know many women before, given my heart to a few ... "

Sixties sounding thing, shouty backing ... Been around year's ... But got a few spins recently.

So I don't know mate, unless your version is some techno soul disco y2k unusuallness ...:D:)

i think if it wasn't for R'n'B you wouldn't be listening to what you do ..... it's the building blocks of the music and (in scotland anyway)is attracting the younger generation . is that a bad thing .

not just saying this but in MY honest opinion good quality gritty r'n'b is the way forward , hence the reason why i don't dj at soul do's very often anymore and run an R'n'B night , it's what i love with a passion
