Guest Sharon H Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Actually they said they do: "...the apparel oft proclaims the man." - Polonius in Hamlet Which is why I always wear Primark. Oooo , Im loving your choice of clothing Matt , just dont tell everyone
Guest Matt Male Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Oooo , Im loving your choice of clothing Matt , just dont tell everyone I think everyone already knows. I'm glad there are no photos of me on here.
Guest Matt Male Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I used to be bothered by this, as I felt it reflected on the scene as a whole, but let's be honest most of us are old, bald(ing) and (in my case) fat bastards who look like Wurzel Gummidge's brother in pretty much everything. At least the older blokes who wear this clobber have kept fit.
Guest Bearsy Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 strange thing for in all this is that people are actually getting offended or defending what they or others wear if people are comfortable wearing them then why be offended or defend the clothing its just clothing ffs but then again its just another SS thread just just ends up in a slagging match again, grown ups eh, sad as fook when you actually take a step back and read some of this dribble that just seems to be festering on every single thread on here nowadays no wonder 90% of all those that used to post on here say SS is full of up its own arse argumentative saddos it used to be a good laugh on here once but now im starting to agree with that 90%
Guest dundeedavie Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Let's be honest here from a guys point of view the 'uniform' for a soulie is black trousers, black shoes and some polo shirt or variation of(maybe they are a rebel and wear a short sleeve bennie instead) so i'd welcome people dressing with more character, whatever that may be.
Chalky Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Rather than slag the site or it's members maybe folk should try and post a topic of something more positive, might improve your opinion that way. Like me gran said "if nowt good to say say nowt! And can we leave any personal stuff off the topic, if wish to discuss clothing then fine but stick to the clothing.
ste gal 7 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 (edited) and thats were primark comes in usefull you can look an even bigger t--t for less than the cost of a ticket into most do"S, trust me ive bin Edited May 13, 2012 by stegal7
Popular Post hullsoul Posted May 13, 2012 Popular Post Posted May 13, 2012 But Kev its obvious, if you don't go to oldies venues and endorse the baggy trousered look, you must frequent half empty up front ones with other boring chin strokers who plainly don't go out and have fun!!! Its a simple fact of life Steve/Kev Strange spent Friday & Saturday night scratching my arse at two full venues (one run by some young lads in Leeds) that were playing brilliant tunes & I was learning so much about the music I love & lots were new & exciting to me...............I suppose I was been really retro as I was doing what I was taught as young wet behind the ears soulie in the 70t's & that was to hear new tunes that will become anthems of the future.I'm sorry to hear that there's no real point in the scene trying to evolve as it has for the last 40+ years.........shame. On the 40/50 something in there retro cloths when I see them they seem to have become cartoon characters of the actual fashion as I remember (& wore) it,they've taken certain elements & exaggerated them to the nth degree to make it rather strange. I remember when I started going out to soul do's again, must have been about 2004. I went down to my local event, with a guy who I had known only slightly from back in the day. Anyway I don't drink and him and his mates wanted a taxi, but I digress............it was only after we had been stood at the bar a few minutes when we turned around to look at the dance floor..............I looked at all three of my companions to see what they were wearing.............I couldn't believe my eyes..........every piece of clothing they had on was black...............then I noticed that most of the other blokes were dressed the same. I felt very out of place in my clothes of many colours..........I asked my mate if I should go home and change......
Quinvy Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Got into scoots about 8 years ago got into soul about 40 years ago . They're not scoots though mate........they're just Vespas... ............sorry mate, joke. 1

Guest Byrney Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I do wonder how this "saying this to their faces would work". I think the look is daft beyond belief and a snapshot (innacurate most of the time) of 3 or 4 years of the scenes history. But I wouldn't go up to some nostalgia scener and say you look daft as it would annoy them and possibly spoil a good night for both of us. Although it is unlikely that we will be in the same room as I have no intention of attending a nostalgia event. However if I was asked or it came up in a conversation I wouldn't hesitate to state my view. Anyone can wear what they like, but we're all free to have opinion. As many seem to have about people like me wearing trainers to a night, Has zilch impact on me. i dunno whats up with you miserable old codgers ! feel free to frequent your 'up your own arse' .... i mean up front events. personally i find nothing wrong with any kind of clothing folk decide to wear at a soul event, its their choice. the retro look is great, last nights turnout at lincoln were ultra cool on the whole, smart suits, rockabilly styles, modern casuals, the lot. next saturdays will no doubt have a good few circle skirts and the odd pair of bags, fair play to em. last weekends Grosvenor rooms was packed with folk enjoying themselves, it had premier league DJ's and premier league music. remember that when you're stood scratching your arse at a half empty event. can the scene progress any more and do we really want it to? where can it go? what else does it have to offer? answers on a postcard please for the guy who has a balls to call them 'dick heads' , at least have the guts to say it to faces. bloody keyboard warriors IAN (who no longer wears bags, but sometimes wears a pair of 20" bottom vintage spencers)

John A Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Mark see you have a couple of scoots on your avatar pic , just got into it then or was it part of your youth? scooters (and soul) were both a part of my youth, but I wouldn't dream of riding it now in some rediculous parka or GRASS SKIRT!! oh dear each to their own I guess, but I do have to chuckle at the baggies. 1
Grayman45 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 i cant believe what i am reading, is there any nudey all nighters around thats worth a thought cheers billy It's an idea. No swallow diving though
barney Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 the inference being that people who wear the said attire , baggies /skirts etc are not worthy of todays soul scene and the premise is that they are bringing the scene into disrepute. I say not so and think they are great ambassadors for the scene ,. have attended venues where when certain of these people are present and dancing there is spontaneous applause at the end of records , the atmosphere becomes charged and infectious and these are not only the youngsters but middle aged fit as fook men and women. must say that these are mainly classic oldies nights cant remember anything like this happening at the more upfront venues I have attended , but then again the music at these is not really my cup of tea,.
Paddy Ferry Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I'm intruigued, Why are there so many photos appearing in the gallery with people wearing circle skirts and baggy trousers. Musically this is a retro scene in what we listen to and yet it is progressive in the way that it influences todays music. Why then, do we have to find find people that dress in a fashion that has passed time. Music is timeless, dress fashion moves on. Do we really want to become a scene like the TEDS (The Edwardian Dress Society) where it's more about the dress to explain what or who we are than normal people, dressing normally (ie todays fashion) enjoying the musc that we love. Why should an outdated dress sense be part of the progressive culture of soul music. The music itself is sampled and copied, deserveredy so because it is so good. The fashon that went with it is so dated. Enjoy the music and dress accordingly.......... Shoot me down then Steve Each to their own Steve, I can't make comments on what folk wear because I don't look too good in anything {porky Paddy} but could you not say technology has moved on and why do folk keep playing music on record players. 2
Guest JIM BARRY Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 awww jim i thought you would have been more comfy in baggy skirt i tried to get in a few skirts lol

In fairness, and with respect, I don't think the guy who started the thread was suggesting that at all. He was just questioning whether it was a good 'look' or not. By the way, can anybody define 'upfront venue' for me, or is that another thread?
Guest JIM BARRY Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 not being funny but if thats the reason you don't go to niters it's a fairly shallow reason just 1 reason....there's plenty more

Yeah, one that plays interesting, exciting soul music for the dancefloor...that includes new discoveries, under played oldies & big rareities, with a splash of Modern.....errrmmmmm remember when the scene embraced this as the norm, instead of looking down thier noses at it...... Codfromderby Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 no mate, by then it was bowling shirts and drainpipe jeans and plastic sandals.....fkn awfull style oh the joy of dancing all night in a hot venue whilst wearing plastic sandals and a mohair jumper ! 1

Russ Vickers Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I think older folk look silly in Spencers etc, but its thier choice. Some of the yougsters look kinda cool. I dont mind NS oldies within context of a Nighter playing some newies aswell. Now & again I enjoy an all oldies Night. I dont like folk who slag off venues that are trying to keep it real every time someone posts something they see as detrimental to thier idea of the scene.. Russ
Codfromderby Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 earlier in this thread someone mentioned "pods", saw some in a trendy shop at the weekend £90 !!!!, they now remind me of he shoes a retired health and safety inspector would wear on a saga holiday. next weekend i might go out dressed exactly as i was in may 1976 drainpipe jeans 31w !! winkle pickers polo neck mohair jumper ex army gabardine trench coat burgundy streaks in my full head of hair, do, do, do what you feel

MrsWoodsrules Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I agree with the original poster, what's all that about? It's 2012, lets move on, nothing more sad IMO than some middle aged bloke, spinning with a pair of wide soul bags & a vest. Move on, its not cool, its detrimental to the scene. I was wearing drainpipes & pointed shoes at Wigan in 1979 (I admit with a black F Perry), I was making regular trips to South Moulton street & Browns of Bond Street to get my clobber at that point, ahead of the game as usual. This is before I got in to footballl terrace fashion. Wigan fashion was cool in 76, three years later..........very very uncool. Aid. 1

Julie Moore Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I`ve always worn what i want at a soul venue .............Yes even "Wigan Casino"could not intice me to wear a twirly skirt it was jeans and scruffy tee-shirt and a pair of loafers could`nt risk my good stuff getting ruined from the Sh*t that used to drip from the ceiling, after the "Casino" closed it was always "Smart but Casual"...........Everyone to their own but do think the oldies do look a bit ridiculous..........especially a certain 50+ geezer dressed in said attire at an event i recently attended tried to spin but tripped on his shoe lace and landed on his arse ...............Grow up you silly old buggers 1
