I agree with you Brian... people here so often tell us what we should listen to and now what we should wear. Will they ever be happy? Perhaps they prefer us all to be exactly the same? I thought that was what was so appealing about this scene, about being different, unique and individual!

Too many people are up their own bums I tell you :sleep3:

OK heres a few questions for any of you out there who might be of the beer towel brigade:

Why would a grown man in his mid 40s want to go out dressed like he did when he was 17?

Why would anyone want to go around adorned with badges proclaiming "I AM INTO NORTHERN SOUL" ?

Is it some kind of insecurity as to your identity as a person?

If I conducted a survey of the above mentioned people to ascertain their top 10 records of all time, would any of the records be outside of the bracket of the top sounds of 73,74 & 75?

Would any of you know what Searling's top sounds of 1979 were?

Do you even realise that there was a scene between 76 and 96?

Do you know any records that were played during this period?

Are you interested in listening to / discovering new sounds?

OR would you just prefer to dance/listen to to Salvadors, Williams & Watson, Tomangoes etc for ever more?

Any rational/logical answers to the above questions would be appreciated, if not dont bother.

PS if anyone is offended by the above, this message board is about opinions and you can guess mine from this post. Merry Christmas

============

Why would such a rude and opinionated post like the above deserve a rational answer? I don't wear spencers etc, but I'm still offended, because you don't seem to be aware of personal choice. Most of the people who sport beer towels, etc, DO dance, I suspect you wouldn't have time, whilst rushing up to the decks to check, the matrix number and turning circle of a particular 45.

And the other extremely rude thing you've said....."If the answers aren't rational don't bother". Rational by who's logic, your own? So if someone puts an opinion, and it doesn't agree with your own you reserve the right to veto the messages, cos they don't meet your criteria. What's it like to be omnipotent?

Your last sentence says, "If anyone is offended by the above, this message board is about opinions". So how about following that to the letter, and accept others may have differing opinions to you, and also accept that they have a right to voice said opposite views.

P.S. Merry xmas

Hey up Steve.

Therapy!! That god-sent lifeline, so often advocated by those, who by their own standards, don't need it.

To try and answer your question........

A 45 year old bloke, dressed like you say, probably is more at one with himself than those who mock him! He obviously doesn't allow derisory comments and attitudes to affect him. We can also presume he doesn't embrace a perverse need to 'conform' to trends. Here is a man, who, from the age of 17, has derived so much pleasure from this scene of ours, he wants more of the same. Why should anyone judge a devotee of something they themselves endear to? Therapy to correct arrogance and affect low self esteem would methinks be more appropriate.

As for style, I've always believed in the old adage; 'It's not what you wear but how you wear it.' A stylish person very rarely wears fashion. Anyone can buy fashion.

Just to finish. It's a well known fact that those who point the finger at anyone 'different', do so to help alleviate their own inadequacies.

I've got a rational question.... have you always been a wakner? It's probably people like you, with your mockery of others, that turn them away and make them feel stupid. Luckily, there are others, such as I, that applaud them and say to the likes of you.... fukc you!karen_bridges_anime01.gif

Thanks for the sentiments matey.

It didn't take much thought as it's so relevant to my own life. I've had to swim upstream from a similar teen age and now at the age of 50, I'll be damned if I flow down.

Well perhaps they should be a little bit higher on the agenda for people on a soul forum....

I'm aware that the above message will likely result in you swarming all over me like a Pirahana at feeding time.....but that seems to be the norm on this forum at present....the word lemmings springs to mind......

My soul content......? Explain yourself.....

It was a rhetorical question and I shouldn't really need to explain myself. Your posting was a paradox.....you argued a point about too much arguing the point AGAIN, along with no discussion of records. All with no discussion about records.

It's more than a soul forum, it's a community... something you might, more than likely, have missed seeing that your head is probably so far up your own bottom. Didn't Santa visit you? Never mind, maybe next year when your a nice boy :sleep3:

Thought this section was called 'All about soul', and not 'Please discuss records cos Richard says so'. There was the semblence of a thread here, regarding clothing, which then turned into the usual 'bag bashing show', which is also typical on here at times. No thought given to the fact that there may be members on SS who might wear bags, and would prefer to NOT be ridiculed. I'm sure Mike, or someone else might warn me, or something, but I thought moderating was different to ordering people to discuss a particular topic. Once again freedom of choice is the issue, and as long as the subject matter comes under the 'all about soul' heading, I can't see the problem.

The above is just plain disrespectful IMO. Ever taken part in or followed an oldies/newies debate, same people all the time saying the same thing re: newies...."For the good of the scene"....."Must get youngsters in"..... "Same old top 500".....blah blah etc. No mention of lemming mentality then for some reason?Everybody's entitled to an opinion, and has been said before by many, entitled to voice it, without encountering disparaging remarks aimed solely at a particular musical taste, which in most cases (it appears to me) revolve around soulies who like oldies.

:sleep3: Not particularly eloquent but the old saying 'live and let live' springs to mind..why cant't we all just wear what we feel comfortable in without all this bloody nonsense...from a personal point of view I envy those that feel comfortable dancing in a pair of jeans...believe me I've tried but still go back to the wide legged trousers...as for spencers? what's so wrong with them? If the person wearing them is a dancer I can't think of anything more suitable..they allow them to dance without the discomfort of peeling sweat soaked trousers away from legs all night..daft? I don't think so.

Winnie I wasn't drunk at Stoke...couln't have been cos I can remember being there tongue.gif See you there NYE laugh.gif

I've noticed that on this forum if anybody says anything that is a opinion on anything, whether it be about clothes, records, whatever..then they're jumped on because they're expressing an opinion that may offend some of the sensitive souls on here. More often than not it's somebody who may agree with the poster! Soulgirl says it's a community on here and that Richard may not understand what a community is? Well I'm not sure why he should have to pussyfoot around just in case he offends somebody he doesn't know from Adam...for God's sake don't we live in a democracy? It's not like he's saying anything offensive or hurtful to members on here. If Richard thinks that it can get boring talking about non record subjects doesn't he have the right to say that as an equal member of this forum? I agree with him that it's like bloody groundhog day on here at the moment-oldies v newies, fancy dress v dressing your age etc etc and I do wonder what some of these subjects are doing in an "all about the Soul" forum?

This is a great site and it does worry me slightly that people will be alienated by the keep the faith love everybody and everything attitude on here ..there was a time when I could come on here and have a bit of a debate without worrying that I'd be getting daggers off strangers at the next soul event I attended.

Anyway that's my two pennyworth....back now to slagging Man United fans off on 606... :sleep3:

(btw I won't take the personal comments about my husband to heart...my skin's slightly thicker than that...)

The trouble is, as both yours and Richards posts show, to get your points across, you're doing the same, if not worse than the people you're slating. A honest mistake I think (and I don't mean that to sound patronising). You're right of course that the dialogue does become a tad 'intense' and offensive at times, as does life.
