A few of my favourite LP tracks which I think would have made great 45s...

Maxine Brown - Don't Leave Me Baby (Epic)

Barbara Lewis - I Can't Break Away (From Your Love) / The Stars (Volt)

Gloria Lynne - I've Just Gotta Tell Somebody (Canyon)

Kim Tolliver - Learn To Get Along Without You (Chess)

Rhetta Hughes - Cry Myself To Sleep / Giving Up My Heartaches (Tetragrammaton)

Paul Kelly - You Make Me Tremble (Warner Bros)

Carla Thomas - I Play For Keeps (Stax)

Edwin Starr - Soul City (Open Your Arms To Me) / 24 Hours To Find My Baby (Gordy)

Candi Staton - Living For You (Warner Bros)

Mavis Staples - It Makes Me Wanna Cry (Volt)

Eleanore Mills - Telegram (Astroscope)

Some great tracks get overlooked when they're not available on 45s.

...and just think there was a time we could have had 'Sweet Sherry' and 'Baby Hit And Run' in this list.

Hello Tim,

The Lifestyle album is great, I reviewed it as a new release in Black Echoes.

'This Dream' is one of my all-time favourite ballads and I always thought 'Katrina' should have crossed over.

Freddie Butler - Give me lots of Lovin ( with a dab of soul )

allegedly on a 45 although never seen one apart from the boot.

100% never on a 45 mate. Interesting that they put a sticker on the sleeve saying that it contained the hit single I'm Your Pimp - but it didn't come out on a 45

Like I said Pete I've never seen or heard of one being seen.

Rufus Lumley - Stronger Than Me - RCA

Brilliant track, and another instance of the LP getting released in Stereo and MONO versions.

The Dells - Don't trick me, treat me

Bobby Taylor & Vancouvers - Don't be affraid

Barbara McNair - It happens every time

Linda Jones - If only (we had met sooner)

Great thread and some great LP's to be collected and discovered I think. I Just love some of the cover photos / art works too!

Some of my current faves, first few of which I'm playing out in a few early spots locally:

Archie Bell & the Drells - "When you left heartache began" (Tighten Up LP 1968).

I also love the version of "A Thousand Wonders" which TSU Toronados also recorded for this LP, which I think was a B side to the Spanish only issue of Tighten Up 45 and different tempo to their Ovide issue 45 (much cheaper too on this LP!).

Willie Hutch - "Lucky to be loved by you" (Soul Portrait LP 1969)..Great LP.

Gloria Scott - "A case of too much love making" (What am I gonna do LP 1974)...I think this did actually get a 45 release in Canada? Criminal that this was her only LP as Barry White was apparently too busy on his own work at the time.

Ronnie Dyson - "I want to be where you are" (Love in all flavors LP 1977)

5 Stairsteps & Cubie - "I'm the one who loves you" (Loves Happening LP)...Great alternative version of the Impressions 45 I think.

Willie Hutch - "Hurt so bad"...great version I think / "Let's try it over again" (Season for Love LP 1970)

Curtis Mayfield - "No thing on me" (Super Fly Motion Pic LP 1972).

Cheers, Steve

As far as I know this LP only, the other track from Plays The Hits:

I got that album but must admit I've never played that track. River Deep Mountain High and You've been a bad girl ? are on it too are they not?

Bobby King was released on a US Warner 45 - I had about a dozen copies which I sold about 6 or 7 years ago and I've never seen one since

(Gene Townsel)

Sends Shivers down the spine

Wish I could afford one of these now , nearly bought one for 50 quid about 15 years ago.

However after having "booked it", the dealer took if off sale and put it on again for 3 x the price.

Nice one, great album.

Agreed My mate's got one, (don't think he'd part with it though) there is a tale that the money invested in the production on this album was a method of laundering drug money and these albums were never promoted... Criminal on both counts!!

Thanks for clarifying Pete. Great photo of her on the LP though hey. I wonder what she's listening to with her hands over her ears?! :D

Without rooting in the cupboard there is a cracking Esquires LP.....is it on Bunky? Only a few quid as well. Sure there is an LP only track on it.

Also Inez Foxx in Memphis, is one of the tracks LP only as well, good one it is too.

This little gem from Betty Wright. Would have been a monster on the rare Soul scene with a 7" release but the format monkeys loss is our gain :D

Guessing we can open this thread up to some recent(ish) soul too? In which case here's one from last year that sees Betty Wright still in top form I think...

Not sure about this but wasn't Jerry Butlers version of "Ordinary Joe" album only?

Posted

Sorry but this not LP only. This is on a Balance Town 45 and of course on a re-issued Crazy Beat 45.

This LP only thread was done last year. It ran for 7 pages.

Thanks for the link...I hadn't seen that thread. Bound to be lots of repeats on this one then...but hopefully some new stuff too. Also, the refosoul links don't work on that one, which is a shame.

Anyway, here's another to hopefully keep things going on this one (I'm still trying to get my hands on this original Alice Clark LP if anyone has one for sale?!)...

All the best, Steve.

Here's a few of my faves. I'm quite sure they're all LP only but will stand corrected if somebody knows different:

Al Wilson - 50/50

William Bell - Relax

The O'Jays - Let Life Flow

David Ruffin - I Wanna Be With You
