Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Looking for a nice demo copy of Fame F-1002 Jimmy Hughes - You Might As Well Forget Him Anyone who can help me Thanks DB Beautiful record. Have you heard the cover version by Tommy Quickly on UK Piccadilly?
Pete S Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Or the version by Derrick Harriott "Walk the streets"
Pete S Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Beautiful record. Have you heard the cover version by Tommy Quickly on UK Piccadilly? Well you learn something every day! Never knew that existed.
Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Well you learn something every day! Never knew that existed. Have you listened to it yet? And he's a fellow Scouser.
Pete S Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Have you listened to it yet? And he's a fellow Scouser. Yeah it's not bad at all. I know the artist - one of Brian Epstein's I think.
Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Yeah it's not bad at all. I know the artist - one of Brian Epstein's I think. That's right. But he wasn't very successful and took it bad. Go to Wiki for a bit more info.
Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Anyone ever seen an issue of the Fame single? I'd have to check but I think mine might be an issue?
Guest Doctor Bird Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Derrick Harriott's version is fantastic. Anybody knows if Tommy Roe, who wrote the song, recorded it himself.
Garethx Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Interesting thing about the Tommy Quickly is that it's definitely a cover of the Jimmy Hughes version as opposed to a cover of The Tams: the arrangement is practically a carbon copy. Derrick Harriot's on the other hand seems to be a cover of The Tams. I've never heard (writer) Tommy Roe's version, which according to youtube was issued in the UK on HMV (ABC Paramount in the US?). All of this doesn't help Doctor Bird to get a copy but I got one pretty quickly after putting a want for it on here in the topic on the Ace/Fame Record Day box set.

mshoals Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Anyone ever seen an issue of the Fame single? I think the blue one below is an issue:
Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 (edited) In that case, according to the scans above, mine's defo an issue. Interesting note. This Jimmy Hughes release on Fame was distributed by Vee Jay, whereas the others, and I'm not saying all of them, were distributed by Atco / Atlantic. Edited April 24, 2012 by denbo
John Reed Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Steal Away was also distributed by Vee Jay. I cant remember a mention of the distributors on the releases after this until June Conquests Tollie distributed demo of Almost Persuaded (not seen an issue of that one), but the multicoloured release doesnt mention a distributer. I think Vee Jay took up distributing Goldwax about the time Fame changed distribution, maybe they thought distributing Goldwax was more of a money maker than distributing Fame.
Garethx Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Thanks for the scan of the issue Mr Shoals. There are about a dozen VeeJay-distributed Fame singles. All the early ones until the first Atco-distributed 45, Jimmy Hughes' Midnight Affair, have VeeJay numbers. From then on the singles are Atlantic-Atco until Candi Staton's Old Man's Sweetheart, the first Capitol distributed number.
Garethx Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Distribution of both Fame and Goldwax would have gone through VeeJay for an overlapping period in '64, although by no means all Goldwax records of the period had a national distributor: a number of the local-only titles are distinctly hard to pick up.
Garethx Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Also of course the Jimmy Hughes "Steal Away" album is on the main VeeJay label. Fans of "You Might As Well Forget Him" should check out the album-only "I Tried To Tell You" which has a similar flavour and is notable as an early Penn-Oldham soul number.

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Anyone ever seen an issue of the Fame single? Yes, seen - and have....
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Tommy Roe's version is very good, too. Should be, as he wrote it. Came out here in the UK on HMV and in the US on ABC
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Anyone ever seen this UK HMV copy? Me, everytime I go through my HMV singles. I've had a nice R&W demo for several decades, mate ....
Pete S Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 (edited) Me, everytime I go through my HMV singles. I've had a nice R&W demo for several decades, mate .... Nice... Edited April 24, 2012 by Pete S
TOAD Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 a nice re press of "walk the street" is out on a jap 45 this week.
Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Me, everytime I go through my HMV singles. I've had a nice R&W demo for several decades, mate .... Wonder if it actually got released? Plus, can't find it in the US ABC / ABC Paramount listings? I knew he wrote it Tone but I read somewhere that he didn't bother to record it himself. Obviously, that was wrong. A scan and sound file would be absolutely wonderful if at all possible?
Garethx Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Definitely issued in the UK. Not so sure about ABC Paramount in the US either. Tommy Quickly was issued in the US on Liberty though and was apparently quite popular in LA.

I knew he wrote it Tone but I read somewhere that he didn't bother to record it himself. Obviously, that was wrong. A scan and sound file would be absolutely wonderful if at all possible? Maybe it didn't get a US release, Den. Tommy had a couple of earlier singles issued over here that didn't come out as singles in the US, this could well be another. I knew his version before I knew any other version besides Derrick Harriott's (which I knew long before I found out it was not an original). Until I heard Jimmy Hughes' Tommy's was my favourite version, too. But I confess I like all of 'em, it's a hard song to mess up...
Denbo Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Definitely issued in the UK. But was it? Or are there only Demos?

Having not heard the Tommy Roe 'original', my favourite is definitely the Jimmy Hughes. But I'd love to hear Tommy Roe's rendition.
Pete S Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 But was it? Or are there only Demos? No it's on a black stock copy Dennis.
Denbo Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 No it's on a black stock copy Dennis. Your confirmation will do for me Pete. Cheers.
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 No sign of it on any US ABC Paramount discography, and no missing numbers around the point where it might have come out, so it looks like UK only (unless issued in any other non-US country besides ours, of course!

How about ABC's Dot Records ABC's Dunhill ABC's Impulse ABC's Apt ABC's Tangerine None of these subsidiaries either? I have no reason to suspect it would be but you never know.
Guest Doctor Bird Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Which brings us back to the question, who's got one for sale, on demo or issue.

Denbo Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 ...I do know, and it didn't! :D Okay Tone, just being thorough.
Garethx Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 The UK 45 of Tommy Roe has what appears to be an American ABC master number (in the form of 45AMPXXXX) on it as well as the UK catalogue number but I don't think there is a US 45 of it. 1
