Guest Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I have just come back to the spin-drops scene, I call it that because pre 1972 there wasn't the term Northern Soul I think (could be wrong I suppose) but when you mention an old standard like 6x6 Earl van Dyke people quite often have never heard it or its a mission to get it. Its great to see the old Wiganers dancing and I will have a go at some of their faster favorites. HOWEVER Quite surprised when out at the DJ's who get their records out who put on one floor clearer after another. When you do something wrong you either feel pain or see the damage your doing. To go through a train of records one after another and everybody is looking at the stage waiting for something to come alive to, why can't the DJ sense this? Not naming any names because I don't want to upset anybody but with all the swop around DJ's doing the rounds its hard to find a venue you believe will be alive most of the time as their seems to be at least 1 or 2 dead spots in the night. I wonder if people are just trying to sell some obscure records they can't shift? Is it me or does modern sound like something Elvis managed to kill off? 1
soulsalmon Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Yore obviously going to the wrong venues for your taste mate 3

One person's 'floor clearer', is another persons 'must dance' record, you'll have to check the flyers more closely. I'd be a bit surprised if there's a northern DJ who hasn't heard of 6x6 maybe they just didn't have it with them? 2
Chalky Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Times have moved on since 6x6 and like Win I'd be surprised if anyone hasn't heard it. As the others said you are obviously going to the wrong place, 100's of venues that are out and out oldies up and down the country. Don't think I've ever seen a DJ clear the floor one record after another but have you ever wondered why he or she was booked and what they were asked to play. I've been booked to do a certain set and it was totally inappropriate for the venue what I was asked to play. The promoters fault. 1

Guest Donz Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Youv'e never heard one of my sets mate HA! Ahh bless you Salmon. As for modern/crossover Mike (you've clearly never heard, Everybody Knows by Family Underground and Prophecy Rain in my life) Ahh well each to their own! Donz
Guest Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I can live with those 2 tracks. I don't only like records that constitute old northern soul, I love September by Earth wind and fire and Luther Vandross and Alexander O'Neil etc. Its just that when I go to a Northern Soul/Motown Night I want to be hooked by the beat and melody and have a damned good jigging workout. Sorry perhaps its just because I am a bloke
Len Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 (edited) Go to Burnley - It's not an oldies venue but if you still have that 'Hungry for fresh sounds' thing going on like you would have had 'back in the day', you will love it. It is mainly up-tempo 60's and we all have to take it in turns to get on the dance floor as it's packed right up until the very last record, which is closely followed by a chorus of "Crumbs, is that the time?"! Don't worry, there's still room to dance really (not sure if enough for your 'Spin Drops' though!)... 'The Spin Drops' - That would be a great 'Cover up' title! lol Burnley is one hell of an experience and you will come out the other end like a 'Happy Husk' - I'm sure I lost half a stone the last time I went! On the other hand, if (Like many) you wish to go on a nostalgia trip, go to Stoke as that is also fantastic. You have returned after a few years and as Chalky said, things have changed (moved on) so try not to be too quick to criticise and embrace all the sounds that will be new to your ears. All the best, Len. Edited April 23, 2012 by LEN

Guest Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I hope I haven't got a closed mind, believe it or not i've been looking on youtube to try and learn the moves as all I did in my day was this kind of leanback and keep your wrists up dance. And i,ve got hooked by the 'lay that burden down' 'janice' 'Landslide''Tainted Love' 'Im on my way''My little girl''If this is Love' etc. etc is now in my gut and if it don't get fed I feel real hungry. I've only ever heard these tunes over the last few weeks. I really wonder what stoke is like, because I believe they made the soulBoy film there and its been hinted its as near to the casino as you can get and if they trot all of that stuff out its got to be good, or am I wrong?
soulsalmon Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Whatever floats your boat mate, there's room for all genres
Len Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 You will love Stoke. I'm pretty sure most people do, even if they normally attend 'upront' (Newies) type events. You simply can't not enjoy an event where there's 6 million people all in the same hall dancing away....ok, slight exageration, 2000 people but that's a lot of people giving some on the dance floor! Keep us all posted on where you do choose to go and whether our 'advise' helped - Good luck. All the best, Len.
Guest Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Hi ya LEN thanks for your constructive suggestions, I would love to get back to you about the venue's that I enjoy i've been to 5 now and 2 of which I want to be a regular to. I suspect Blackhearts is going to be good and hope to try it soon. On Youtube the shed at Beeston looked good but I don't see any events for it anymore. Also I've had my knuckles rapped twice now for posting in allegedly the wrong place so I suspect putting a my views on the site will only upset some people, so I suspect I am just going to have to waste a lot of time and petrol being disapointed and just internalize my joy when I do find somewhere good. Perhaps I have the wrong view of this web site which I think is potentially way better than facebook for people with our interest. cheers

From what you have said Kings Hall in Stoke is definitely a must go for you, you will love it!

Have you tried it?
Chalky Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Also I've had my knuckles rapped twice now for posting in allegedly the wrong place so I suspect putting a my views on the site will only upset some people, First of all welcome to the site. I'm sure you will find it everything you want it to be, lots of knowledge and information and plenty of event chatter. Secondly no one has rapped your knuckles, Mike has simply tried to guide you in the right direction as your topics were plainly in the wrong place. There is a comprehensive dedicated events section and calendar with plenty of comments and look backs which hopefully will help you make your mind up about a venue. The "All About The Soul" forum is for general scene talk that isn't record, label or artist related, that all goes in the "Look At Your Box" forum. Non soul chatter goes in the magazine section which should be self explanatory. We also have a "Source Feedback" forum for all your questions to anything you are unsure about. Ask if unsure and I'm certain you will get the help and answers you require. Enjoy Soul Source. 1

Someone asked Adam about 6x6. His avatar looks familiar. Yes I know, we were probably the last two people in the room to be asking about oldies.
Len Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Except for when he shot John Lennon. ...But he's got some great records!...Has anybody noticed the following? It don't matter to some what someone may be like as a person - if they have a good record collection, it automatically cancels out any 'badness' in them! lol - Not saying some are shallow or 'owt! ..."Hitler, nasty man...but he had some cracking records!" etc etc...lol ...By the way, this isn't aimed at Mark Chapman - Let's make that absolutely clear! All the best, Len.
