But 'Might Lover' is better by the Mighty Lovers on the yellow labelled vinyl Boo-Ga-Loo as opposed to the Ideals' copy on purple/blue styrene

Cool Off by a million miles.

Never forget the first time I heard this, played by Pep, I thought it was terrible, within 2 weeks of hearing it had got into my head and it was my top want and within 4 weeks I'd secured an emidisc of it on my first trip to Wigan. Still a big big favourite of mine. The other version is ok.

I think I prefer Mighty Lover, but not sure. I know the first time I heard Cool Off at the Mecca, I thought WTF is this crap. As Pete S said, it wasn't long before it worked for me.

It was only "Cool Off" back in the day. Funnily enough I found the Ideals @ Cheapo Cheapo on Berwick Street market roughly about 2 weeks after I got "Cool Off" but I don't think I've ever heard it out anywhere. I love 'em both.....

Ian Levine got that copy! It really p*ssed me off 'cos I already liked the name of the group and the title before I ever heard it and when I asked Brian about it he said Levine had bought it that week. Went to the Mecca that Saturday and heard "Cool Off" for the first time grrrr....

The bit that really hurt was that Levine got it for 45 pence and I had to pay £30 for the next copy @ early 70's prices. No wonder I'm traumatised........

That dj's had dug into Black Culture that deeply impressed me immensely as a youngster in 1983!

Some time later, I heard 'Mighty Lover' and I was even more convinced: "Cool Off" was a reworked song made for an advert and "Mighty Lover" was the original. And it still sounds that way to me.

As a kid (late 70s) I used to tune into Dave Evision's Northern Soul spot on Radio Derby - with the signal dipping in and out badly at times as it was broadcast on AM I think - and I was in Leicestershire!

Dave's regular guest spot was on Terry Christian's show - remember him?

I heard some fantastic songs for the first time on Dave's radio spot and the Mighty Lovers was one of the best

Others I still remember hearing first there (and still love) were Lou Courtney - Trying To Find My Woman (Buddah); Howard Tate - Baby I Love You (Verve); Linda Jones & Whatnauts - I'm So Glad I Found You (Stang); Fantastics - Me And You (Sound Stage 7) - brilliant stuff!!!

Well, I never knew that as actual fact! Thanks for confirming the guesses of a 17/18 year old! Anyone got a bottle of this on ice today, or maybe even a product shot?

Back to the two songs, I think you have to work on the basis that both were immensely popular locally. Each turns up very frequently on eBay and copies are usually very well worn to say the least. You take that to mean they got worn through being played a lot.

Which came first - the ad or the song - is a very interesting question...

"Scotts on Swingers" is an obvious example of a songs reworked for promotional purposes, as is Steve Karmen's "Breakaway". But what about jingles that became songs later - are there any examples?

When I first heard Mighty Lover, around 75 ish I was told it was by The Mighty Lovers. It was many years later when I got the Ideals on a CD I was a tad confused. So I'm sure The Mighty Lovers was the first to surface, after Cool Off.

I do remember it well Richard, one tune that stands out in my memory was Luv Co 'Things are not the same', also he used to play peoples top 3 records, I remember him playing my mate Jaime Saul's choices and Channel 3 was one of his picks, way ahead of his time in taste, this was a £2 record at the time, sadly no longer with us.

Now, not quite sure where this comes into it or what level of ration it would be establishing - not sure what I'd vote for, those are both boring records in my book - surely you are not trying to say 'Cool Off' is a better 'Soul' record than 'Mighty Lover'?...A nice piece of left-wall dance music yeah, with an infectious groove but that line 'get me a drink of pop' has to be the corniest ever heard PETE, surely???!!! 'Mighty lover's' lyrics are no worse than thousands of boy loves girl Soul 45s, but the vocals piss over 'Cool off'....
