Billywhizz Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Which one do you think would go down well on the dance floor most of all and what one would you have in your box? Trying to make my mind up between the two. Cheers Billy
Premium Stuff Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Mighty Lover rather than Cool Off by a mile mate But 'Might Lover' is better by the Mighty Lovers on the yellow labelled vinyl Boo-Ga-Loo as opposed to the Ideals' copy on purple/blue styrene Cheers Richard

Pete S Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Cool Off by a million miles. Never forget the first time I heard this, played by Pep, I thought it was terrible, within 2 weeks of hearing it had got into my head and it was my top want and within 4 weeks I'd secured an emidisc of it on my first trip to Wigan. Still a big big favourite of mine. The other version is ok.
Mick Reed Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Echo Pete's words. Cool off by a mile. yep me 2, cool off everytime for me.
Windlesoul Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Love both and have had both, Mighty Lover for listening to in the car, Cool off for jigging to . Never heard the Might Lovers (ie the group) version though, always just assumed it was still the Ideals, clearly I'm wrong!
Naughty Boy Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Echo whats been said COOL OFF by a country mile

Guest Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Yep, cool off.......it was the 1st to be played as far as I know and the bubbles do it for me............"Hey, you over there........would you get me a drink of....................POP?"
Paul R Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 I think I prefer Mighty Lover, but not sure. I know the first time I heard Cool Off at the Mecca, I thought WTF is this crap. As Pete S said, it wasn't long before it worked for me. Paul
Prophonics 2029 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 When was the Mighty Lover first played?, remember cool off from WC .
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 When was the Mighty Lover first played?, remember cool off from WC . It was only "Cool Off" back in the day. Funnily enough I found the Ideals @ Cheapo Cheapo on Berwick Street market roughly about 2 weeks after I got "Cool Off" but I don't think I've ever heard it out anywhere. I love 'em both..... Ian D
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 and only 45pence on Brian Phillip´s list for some lucky bas++++ Steve Ian Levine got that copy! It really p*ssed me off 'cos I already liked the name of the group and the title before I ever heard it and when I asked Brian about it he said Levine had bought it that week. Went to the Mecca that Saturday and heard "Cool Off" for the first time grrrr.... Ian D

Ian Dewhirst Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 You need to get closure on this Ian  Cheers Richard The bit that really hurt was that Levine got it for 45 pence and I had to pay £30 for the next copy @ early 70's prices. No wonder I'm traumatised........ Ian D
Amsterdam Russ Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 First time I heard "Cool Off" played at an allnighter, I thought it was the backing track for a radio or TV advert for a cool drink aimed at a local black audience. That dj's had dug into Black Culture that deeply impressed me immensely as a youngster in 1983! Some time later, I heard 'Mighty Lover' and I was even more convinced: "Cool Off" was a reworked song made for an advert and "Mighty Lover" was the original. And it still sounds that way to me.

That's exactly what happened Russell. "Cool Off" was specifically made for a soft drink ad that aired in Detroit I believe...... Not sure which one came first though. Did Wylie & Hestor simply re-cycle the Mighty Lovers backing track for the ad song I wonder...? Ian D
Premium Stuff Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 My first hearing of 'Mighty Lover' by The Mighty Lovers was actually on the radio. As a kid (late 70s) I used to tune into Dave Evision's Northern Soul spot on Radio Derby - with the signal dipping in and out badly at times as it was broadcast on AM I think - and I was in Leicestershire! Dave's regular guest spot was on Terry Christian's show - remember him? I heard some fantastic songs for the first time on Dave's radio spot and the Mighty Lovers was one of the best Others I still remember hearing first there (and still love) were Lou Courtney - Trying To Find My Woman (Buddah); Howard Tate - Baby I Love You (Verve); Linda Jones & Whatnauts - I'm So Glad I Found You (Stang); Fantastics - Me And You (Sound Stage 7) - brilliant stuff!!! Cheers Richard

Not sure which one came first though. Did Wylie & Hestor simply re-cycle the Mighty Lovers backing track for the ad song I wonder...? Ian D Well, I never knew that as actual fact! Thanks for confirming the guesses of a 17/18 year old! Anyone got a bottle of this on ice today, or maybe even a product shot? Back to the two songs, I think you have to work on the basis that both were immensely popular locally. Each turns up very frequently on eBay and copies are usually very well worn to say the least. You take that to mean they got worn through being played a lot. Which came first - the ad or the song - is a very interesting question... "Scotts on Swingers" is an obvious example of a songs reworked for promotional purposes, as is Steve Karmen's "Breakaway". But what about jingles that became songs later - are there any examples? 1

Paul R Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 When I first heard Mighty Lover, around 75 ish I was told it was by The Mighty Lovers. It was many years later when I got the Ideals on a CD I was a tad confused. So I'm sure The Mighty Lovers was the first to surface, after Cool Off. Paul
Guest ritchie Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 Mighty Lover, lover here I like cool off too it's just the "fine foxy thing" line makes me squirm and feel embarrassed
SHEFFSOUL Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 (edited) When was the Mighty Lover first played?, remember cool off from WC . as i remember cool off was a big spin at Wigan/mecca '74..Searling used to play it..alongside Carstairs..Soul bowl had some copies of mighty lover for £2 or so later on..i cant remember it being that popular until maybe much later..people bought it cos they could'nt get cool off..btw '' Cool off '' by a mile esp if you were there when it was first played...'' ..Richard popcorn Wylie strikes again with the tremendously popular instrumental..Cool Off..' Billywhizz Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 Thanks for all your replies, interesting reading. I've gone for cool off, should be with no later than Saturday. Cheers Billy
Britishbarry Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Mighty Lover for me . It amazes me how the same backing track can sound so different with a different vocal
Premium Stuff Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Billy Think you should really have both and mix one into the other - Coo off first mixed into (The) Might Lover (just spotted the titles on the Ideals and the Mighty Lovers are different) - either Boo-Ga-Loo version would do Cheers Richard
Guest Polyvelts Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 'Thank you, you fine Foxy Thing you !' 'Hey you over there, will you get me a drink of ..........pop' No contest !!!!

Cheers Richard I do remember it well Richard, one tune that stands out in my memory was Luv Co 'Things are not the same', also he used to play peoples top 3 records, I remember him playing my mate Jaime Saul's choices and Channel 3 was one of his picks, way ahead of his time in taste, this was a £2 record at the time, sadly no longer with us.
Tricky Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Cool off for me too. £4 from John Farrell - Gem Records was it?
Guest Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 'Mighty Lover' is a far superior Soul record...'Cool off' a good dance record in it's day, still sounds good to me now, too...So on that criteria... 'Mighty Lover' no contest....
Simsy Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Mighty Lover for me also. Cool off = repetitive bollix. 1
Pete S Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 So of those who expressed a preference, Cool Off wins by 7 votes to 5. I bet the people who voted for Mighty Lover probably rate If It's All The Same To You Babe higher than Exus Trek as well.
Guest MrC Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 'Mighty Lover' for me - although I love the lyrics to 'cool off'
Daved Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I wasn't around when Cool Off was massive so I'll simply vote for the better song - Mighty Lover.

Guest MrC Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 So, on the lyrics front, what are the definitive lyrics for Cool Off? I'm still not sure if that bit in the middle says "Hey, You over there, can you get me a drag of pot' or "Hey, You over there, can you get me a drink of pop'

Now, not quite sure where this comes into it or what level of ration it would be establishing - not sure what I'd vote for, those are both boring records in my book - surely you are not trying to say 'Cool Off' is a better 'Soul' record than 'Mighty Lover'?...A nice piece of left-wall dance music yeah, with an infectious groove but that line 'get me a drink of pop' has to be the corniest ever heard PETE, surely???!!! 'Mighty lover's' lyrics are no worse than thousands of boy loves girl Soul 45s, but the vocals piss over 'Cool off'.... Edited April 17, 2012 by rich chorley

Amsterdam Russ Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I don't see why it should be one or the other and give a point to each
