Guest Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 (edited) Post is extra / happy to ship anywhere / mail@resolutionrecords.co.uk or PM to order pls. Thx...Mark Rez I use the Record Collector standard to grade my records - as below: M is ONLY for reissues / new releases / sealed records M- is a pretty much unplayed record for me - any obvious signs that a record has been played and I usually downgrade to an EX+ EX+ is a very strong grade for me - just showing some signs of being played but no noise / cue burn / crackle / styrene burn at all. VG+ is for records that have obviously seen some wear and have had a good few plays and may even have light intro crackle but play very, very well. VG is for records with quite a bit of wear and surface markings and some noise / crackle but still a very good player VG- is my lowest grade and VG- records for me are in bad shape - lots of sound quality deterioration and many, many surface marks - not nice. 7"s Artic Strings 'Turn Me On' / 'Non-Stop' (Andee / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £3 ( OG and lovely condition copy of this once-huge Northern Soul oldie - goes all the way cack to The Torch, I believe... ) Howard McGhee and The Blazers 'House Warmin pts 1 & 2' (Argo / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £4 ( High grader copy of this well-loved R&B / "Jump Jive" cut from the early 60s - strong Jazz over/undertones here too with some terrific brass parts - just builds and builds...the rhythm is totally infectious.... ) 7007 - scan/soundfile Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers 'Pinetop' (Atlantic / USA / 1960s / VG+) £4 ( Yet more cookin' R&B from Mark Rez this month...JJ went onto record for several other majors later in his career but this one musta came right at the very, very beginning of his working life...wonderful horn-led mash up with great lead guitar, hammering keys and tit-for-tat solos going off all over the place - hey kids, it's party time!! Few scuffs here and there but amazing condition for an almost 50 year old record, eh...? ) Bill Moss 'Sock It To 'Em Soul Brother' (voc/inst) (Bell / USA / 1969 / Ex+) £5 ( Also released in the UK (on the mighty Pama label) this USA press is actually much rarer...and better in many ways too cos it's got the instrumental version on the flip where the UK press has a different mix on the b - just a classic - top condition...pure Mod sounds... ) Len Barry '1-2-3' (Brunswick / UK / 1965 / M-) £3 ( I guess for many people (myself included!) this was one of the very first Northern Soul tunes they ever heard - and - it has stuck with me ever since - really pleased to be able to offer it here on a totally unplayed UK Brunswick press - 'Bullseye' on flip ain't too shabby either...takes me back... ) Gwen McCrae 'Rockin Chair' (Cat / USA / 1975 / M-) £3 ( Just a top, top bit of FLA Funky sleaze from Clarence 'Blowfly' Reid and Willie Clarke, aided and abetted by Gwen's then hubby, George - this lady had a stunning voice, right? Lovely copy.... ) Mary 'Queenie' Lyons 'Drown In My Own Tears' / 'Try Me' (Deluxe / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £15 ( Cool yellow DJ / promo copy with 2 of the nicest cuts from her uber-rare LP! My first-ever Deluxe yellow promo...topside is just legendary Sister Funk while the flip is a tad slower on the R&B tip - two sides of love... ) Paul Rich 'Hit The Road Jack' / 'Tower Of Strength' (Embassy / UK / 1960s / Ex+) £15 ( Great UK-only Mod / R&B / Popcorn version of the Percy Mayfield / Daddy Ray classic with a powerful lead vocal, cool girlie backing and rasping brass - good stuff - file alongside Andy Williams 'House Of Bambo', Mel Torme 'It Don't Mean A Thing...' etc etc - flip also very neat, nicely midpaced version of the Gene McDaniels N Soul tune - great little 45 from this very obscure artist on a teeny-tiny UK label...wonderful condition and comes in a scarce Embassy custom sleeve too... ) Joe Bataan 'Uptown' / 'Obatala' (Fania / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £15 ( Stunning copy of a mega Latin-Soul tune - picking up many fans recently - impossible to sit still when stuff like this comes on, right? The flip is more uptempo but also very worthy - some label rubbing on the flip side but other than that, the whole thing is A-1... ) Lonnie Mack 'Down In The Dumps' / 'Memphis' (Fraternity / USA / 1960s / VG+) £5 ( 2 rollocking R&B sides on this outstanding label - both guitar-led - topside just goes right off on one while flip is an instrumental version of the Chuck Berry cut - few scuffs / crackles here and there but pretty good all told for a 40+ year old 7" - love the label design - it stayed the same for years and years, didn't it? ) Darrow Fletcher 'That Certain Little Something' / 'My Judgement Day' (Groovy / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £10 ( Quality 60s N Soul beater which lights up any dancefloor - great slowie on the flip too - wonderful shape... ) Holland-Dozier-Holland 'Don't Leave Me Starvin' For Your Love pts 1 & 2' (Invictus / USA / 1972 / M-) £3 ( UNPLAYED copy of this sultry mid-paced 70s dancer - wonderful vox from Lamont Dozier - TUNE...nicely presented in an Invictus custom baggie too... ) The Charmettes 'Please Don't Kiss Me Again' (Kapp / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £5 ( Neat Detroit dancer - big production number with 'Wall Of Sound' brass and great vocal harmonies - obviously strongly Phil Spector-influenced but none-the-worse for that - good slowie called 'What Is A Tear' on the flip too...great condition... ) Timi Yuro 'Insult To Injury' (Liberty / USA / 1960s / VG+) £10 ( Lovely demo copy of this big and ballsy NS 'Beat Ballad' as we used to call em back in the 80s (snort!) - atypical mid-60s production with rock-solid 4/4 beat and great sweeping / darting strings - and Timi's voice is never a chore...lovely copy - just a bit dusty... ) Fats Domino 'It Keeps Rainin' (Liberty / UK / 1967 / VG+) £5 ( Originally issued in 1961, here is the later UK press of this immortal Fats tune - possibly THE slowest track ever played on the Northern Soul scene? Oh yes - just immortal...the original middle has been dinked but overall it's in good nick and is a good bargain at a tenner... ) Classy Magic 'Move To Fast' (Moods Production / USA / 1988 / Mint) £50 ( Unplayed copy of this currently HUGE indemander - how do I start to describe this? Pure Modern Soul / Boogie with some of THE fattest slap basslines on the block and a joyous male/female vocal interplay - oh boy! Trust me, this is just special - would nice up ANY dance - stone, stone MINTER....just realised what it reminds me of, Leroy Hutson's 'Blackberry Jam' and my regulars will know how much I LURVE that sorta sound.......... ) Brothers, Sisters And Cousins 'Smoke Stream' (Nasco / USA / 1970s / M-) £10 ( Rare multi-coloured logo label press here for this much-collected NS 70s NS dancer - great tune... immaculate shape...definitely has it's roots in the church... ) A.C. Reed 'Boogaloo Tramp' / 'Talkin Bout My Friends' (Nike / USA / 1960s / M-) £8 ( UNPLAYED copy of this top-drawer funky R&B double-sider - one side with vox and one side instrumental - every party catered for... ) Arthur Prysock 'House By The Side Of The Road' (Old Town / USA / 1960s / VG+) £5 ( Currently indemand midtempo swayer from huge-voiced Arthur...seen @ £25 / £30 only very recently... ) 7065 - scan/soundfile Everyday People 'I Like What I Like pts 1 & 2' (Paramount / USA / 1972 / M-) £10 ( Cheeky little 'twisted disco' cut that gets the big up from a lotta 'influential' people nowadays - especially on the FX'd out Part 2...seen on Want Lists again...same outfit who gave us the mega-indemand 'World Full Of People' cut on Brownstone... ) Magic Night 'If You And I Had Never Met' (voc/inst) (Pye / UK / 1975 / Ex+) £10 ( As once charted by Dave Godin (in Grand Slam mag) as one of his "All Time Top 20 (Northern) Soul 45s" - this really is wonderful 70s soul that goes right back to both Wigan Casino & The Blackpool Mecca...just wonderful..........I prefer this UK press - it just sounds better - even the instrumental mix is superior...gorgeous copy here... ) E.J. Stamp 'I Know All About It' / 'Where Is There Love' (Rytone / USA / 1981 / MINT) £150 ( Again - only the second time in about 10 years that I've been able to use the Mint grade on an old record - believe me - this 1 million percent unplayed...tuff, tuff Boogie / Modern Soul double-sider outta Nebraska of all places and this is about as rare as they come...both sides are slamming uptempo dancers with booming bass, on-point brass and wonderful, wonderful male / female vocal interplay - oh boy - if I was still collecting, this would be staying @ Res HQ but it's gotta go....so...BE QUICK.... ) Larry Dunn feat. Luisa 'Benjamin's Bin Jammin' / 'Groove Patrol' (Source Productions / USA / 1986 / M-) £10 ( Ignore the slightly daft song titles cos this is actually a top-notch bit of Modern Soul / Boogie action...big pumping basslines and hard keys make this the kinda tune that would have gone down a storm at venues like Rock City, Morecambe Pier back in the day...spotless copy - seen @ £40-odd several times down the years... ) Marie Franklin 'Why Do You Build Me Up' / 'Move On Love' (Stage Music / USA / VG+)£30 ( Not M- so priced fairly / honestly...few scuffs / marks here and there - tiny, tiny amount of crackle but - trust me - this plays like a dream...heavyweight Northern Soul cut outta Detroit as produced by Joey Jefferson - killer midpacer on the flip too...some ringwear to label too but all print / text / credits still 100 legible...btw -the topside is NOT a version of The Foundations old 60s pop/soul tune, completely different track... ) 7092 - scan/soundfile The Mohawks 'The Champ' (Supreme / Belgium / 1969 / VG+/VG+) £10 ( Rare Belgian press for this old, old fave - the beauty of this press is that it has a great pic sleeve which is actually a smaller version of the LP sleeve and is in itself highly collectable - wonderful item... ) Ecstacy, Passion & Pain 'Good Things Don't Last Forever' (Pye / UK / 1974 /M-) £3 ( Unplayed copy of this wonderful Philly / Salsoul / Blackpool Mecca / Northern Soul / Disco banger which has been a staple in NYC clubland from the day it was recorded right up yo now - just joyous...written by Bunny Sigler too - such pedigree.... ) The Dynamic Tints 'Be My Lady' (Twinight / USA / 1960s / VG-) £8 ( Sadly - nowhere near M-, looks rough and has some crackle but - my Gad - it plays very, very well - tiny, tiny edge warp too which dnap affect play in any way - just one of THE best Xover / midtempo tunes on the whole damned circuit...did these guys EVER make a bad record? Not that I've heard...best bassline of the day as well.... ) 12"s: Ernie Lee Banks 'Are You Ready To Be Loved' (After Dark / USA / 1990 / M-) £5 ( Unplayed copy of this ace Modern Soul stepper / dancer - was SO big as a new release on the 'scene back in the day...still tight in shrinkwrap... ) Lonnie Givens 'The Heat Is On' (AIP International / USA / 1982 / M/M) £35 ( SEALED COPY!! Simply put - one of THE biggest / most indemand Disco / Boogie 12"s of the last few years - has gone as high as £100+ on the evil bay in the past few months and that was for a VG+ copy!! Stunning synth-driven dancer with wonderful female backing vocals and a mighty lead vocal from LG himself - BADNESS... ) Clarence Jackson 'Our Love Will Last Forever' / 'Inst' (RR / USA / 1984 / Ex+) £15 ( Rare and tough uptempo Disco-Boogie cut outta Detroit with some ace FX flying around all over the place and some great synth washes from CJ - my first-ever copy - got a few spins on the Modern Soul scene right back in the Rock City days but never really turned up in any quantity - tune...and another one that works equally well as both vocal and instrumental...a few minor scuffs here and there - minimal... ) 1208 - scan/soundfile Tony Jackson 'Don't Push' / 'Dub' (Tivoli / UK / 1990 / M-) £15 ( Rare, rare UK-only dancer that got a few spins on the Modern Soul scene as a new release but then just never seemed to be mentioned again? God knows why cos it's absolutely perfect for todays' dancefloors...this copy here is an unplayed promo too - rare as they come...this is the same guy who gave us the KILLER 'Steppin Out Of The Groove' 12" from a few years earlier - this one is right up there too - seen @ £75 elsewhere only earlier this week... ) LPs: Leon Haywood 'Back To Stay' (Pye / UK / 1973 / Ex/Ex+) £8 ( Immaculate copy of a classic / ever-indemand Soul LP...pristine vinyl, sleeve just slightly creased...'Make Me Yours' , 'One Way Ticket To Loveland' , 'Show Me That You Care' etc etc - arranged by a very young James Carmichael... ) The Isley Brothers 'The Brothers: Isley' (Stateside / UK / 1969 / VG+/VG+)£5 ( Tuff UK press for this classic Isleys set with 'Vacuum Cleaner' (as also done by Merryweather & Carey), 'I Turned You On' , 'Was It Good To You' , 'The Blacker The Grape' and loadsa more...high-quality LP - both sleeve and vinyl have lived a busy life it seems but it's been a happy one... ) Buddy Miles 'All The Faces' (CBS / UK / 1974 / VG+/Ex+) £10 ( Lovely UK copy of this ace soul set from Buddy with his immortal Modern Soul dancer 'I'm Just A Kiss Away' + old Mecca dancer 'We Got Love' - top Johnny Bristol production - 'Pull Yourself Together' also has many fans out there in Soul Land...sleeve with some light seamwear - vinyl one whole grade cleaner....never been an easy LP to find... ) Ernie Ranglin 'Mr Ranglin With Soul' (Steady / Jamaica / 1960s / M-/M-) £25 ( This album is absolutely IMMACULATE and I think has only ever been played once...100% OG first press before the later RCA press - absolutely magnificent LP, Ska / Rocksteady all the way with 'Sling Shot' leading the way here - such a great, good time tune with Ernie's lead guitar pointing the way for all others to follow - must be rare as hell....always always always tops $100 on the evil one whatever condition it's in... sf11 - scan/soundfile Street People 'Street People' (Vigor / USA / 1976 / Ex/M-) £5 ( Unplayed vinyl and very slightly worn top seam here...well - this was THE first 'proper' small label Soul LP I ever bought - must have been in 1982 - and - for some reason (ask any soulful Brummies ya know!) there were literally 100s and 100s of these in circulation around the Birmingham second hand record shops - I think I paid £1 for mine and I've still got it - the £500 records may come and go but quality often costs nothing and - trust me - this LP is just amazing - every single track is lethal...loadsa big NS spins on here like 'never Get Enough Of Your Love' , 'Wanna Spend My Whole Life With You, Baby' etc etc and the ballads / mid-pacers are stunning too - best tenner you'll ever spend... ) The Swordsmen 'The Swordsmen' (RCA / USA / 1969 / VG/VG+) £5 ( Sleeve has a cut corner and a 4" top seam split plus wear to opening so has definitely seen better days - wax is a whole grade better - big old N Soul, LP-only spin here 'Disgusted and Discouraged' - was big @ Wigan Casino, I believe? Very similar sounding to NF Porter's 'Keep On Keepin' On' if ya dig that kinda thin...Hard LP... ) Cheers...Mark Rez Edited April 5, 2012 by Guest
