Ian Dewhirst Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) Hot on the heels of Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes we're proud to announce the forthcoming release of....... Philadelphia International: The 40th Anniversary Box Set Harmless HURTBOX001 Release Date: 21st May 2012 Following on from the recent Top 40 album 'Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits" and the Current No.21 album 'Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes', it gives us great pleasure to introduce Philadelphia International: The 40th Anniversary Box Set - the most complete and comprehensive study of the Philadelphia International catalogue to date. We invited world acknowledged Philadelphia International expert Ralph Tee to return to compile his second Box Set for the label following his previous ground-breaking 14 x vinyl LP box set in 1986 (over 25 years ago) which still regularly sells for £100+ on e-bay and throughout collectors circles. This time Ralph has the added benefit of a further 25 years of experience studying the Philadelphia International operation and a lot more time to play with over twelve and a half hours of pure quality music from one of the greatest labels of all time. Also included within the package will be a 60 page full-size booklet containing full sleeve notes and track details from Ralph Tee (Ralph is also author of the definitive "Who's Who In Soul Music") which will also include a number of archive photos and key album scans. We are also proud to include within the booklet for the first time ever, a fully comprehensive complete discography of all U.S. Philadelphia International and related labels compiled by Philadelphia International expert David Grimes (aka 'Phillydave'). An absolute must for all Philly collectors and especially Philadelphia International archivists as there has never been an officially printed full discography before. All recordings will be fully re-mastered to the highest quality. We will be doing a series of specially commissioned film clips of both Ralph Tee and Richard Searling interviewing Philadelphia International co-founder Kenny Gamble. This will be distributed via various social network forums, blogs and You Tube in the weeks leading up to release. Track Listing CD 1 1. Zach's Fanfare # 2 Original Album Version 1.03 M.F.S.B. 2. Ian Dewhirst Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 Not too hard to work out what I'm getting for my birthday this year Ian It'll be a lifelong investment Martin. You could spend years just pouring through Phillydave's 22 page comprehensive PIR discography alone LOL... Who were the Knights And Arthur on Gamble 202.....? What's Donnie Vann's "Hold Back The Night" on Gamble 241 like? It's not the Trammps song is it.....? Who has the full collection of the special edits of Lou Rawl's REGIONAL vocals on "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" - mentioning Boston, Washington, Miami, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, Houston, Chicago, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Dallas, San Francisco and Los Angeles.....? Fascinating stuff mate. 60 page booklet should get you through a weekend LOL.... Ian D
Mike Lofthouse Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Nice set Ian but....maybe i can't see but no 'I Miss You' - Harold Melvin , 'Love Train' - Bunny Sigler and one of my all time favourites Carolyn Crawford's - 'Just Got To Be More Careful'?? And what is the rational with the running order - not in chronological order? Mike
Ric-tic Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 (edited) and one of my all time favourites Carolyn Crawford's - 'Just Got To Be More Careful'?? first thing i looked for too mike Edited April 4, 2012 by ric-tic
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 Nice set Ian but....maybe i can't see but no 'I Miss You' - Harold Melvin , 'Love Train' - Bunny Sigler and one of my all time favourites Carolyn Crawford's - 'Just Got To Be More Careful'?? And what is the rational with the running order - not in chronological order? Mike Hi Mike, As Ralph says, he'd have to compile 20 CD's to please everyone. He missed out some faves of mine too - "Time To Get Down" - The O'Jays, "I Don't Want To Cry" - Dick Jensen, "Unity" - The O'Jays etc, etc but I guess everyone has a different compilation. He could probably have included 3 seperate albums by the O'Jays alone if you think about it. However, there is another Richard Searling Philly project coming up soon and we are trying to avoid too much track replication on all these releases. Unlike the Moulton package Ralph deliberately didn't compile this in chronological order because he preferred the sequencing the way he's done it, which is every compilers prerogative. For instance, CD 7 is the more Jazzy side of the labels which wouldn't have been possible if he'd gone for the chronological approach...... I honestly believe whoever compiled this would leave out some peoples favorite tracks. That's the problem with such a huge catalogue - can't please everyone. Patience is a virtue MIke. I'm pretty sure those tracks will end up on another project! Ian D
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 first thing i looked for too mike As I said above, good things come to those who wait! Ian D
Ric-tic Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 As I said above, good things come to those who wait! Ian D im waiting the only problem i have with this box set is how do those cds fit in that box it dosnt seem tall enough , ive been trying to work it out for hours honest i wont sleep :D
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 (edited) im waiting the only problem i have with this box set is how do those cds fit in that box it dosnt seem tall enough , ive been trying to work it out for hours honest i wont sleep :D Are you taking the 2" lid into account I wonder....? It's a very snug package! I went through about 10 different prototypes before I settled on that one. The design protects the contents when the lid's on which prevents the contents from falling out! Ric-tic Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 all taken into account ian seems the lid slides down somewhat, ive looked at it from every angle, i guess ill just have to buy one to see for myself

Ian Dewhirst Posted April 21, 2012 Author Posted April 21, 2012 (edited) It's with a massive sigh of relief that I can say that Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff have signed off on the PIR 40th Anniversary box set. Phew. They went through every detail of the 60 page book including the 20 odd pages of Philly Dave's discography and gave us the thumbs up so we're now good to go on the 21/05/12. Ian Dewhirst Posted April 21, 2012 Author Posted April 21, 2012 My order has already gone in, following on from the Tom Moulton re-mixes it's going to be a Philly Summer I for one appreciate the sterling efforts that has gone into the production Dave Cheers Dave. We went through about 10 drafts on the booklet, so you can imagine how much fun that was to get signed off! Philly International went through 3 lots of fax paper (which everybody had trouble reading LOL) and then Joe Tarsia was consulted to lend his eagle eye to everything. They'd never seen the actual discography laid out before so I think they're happy! Ian D
Mike Lofthouse Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 Bet Gamble & Huff spotted/mentioned the missing Carolyn Crawford
Ian Dewhirst Posted April 22, 2012 Author Posted April 22, 2012 Bet Gamble & Huff spotted/mentioned the missing Carolyn Crawford It's not so much missing but more Ralph preferred the other two cuts which is the compiler's prerogative I guess. Actually it could be handy since it will probably fit a future "PIR Rarities' package which I'm hoping to get out later this year. But you're right Mike. They don't miss much apart the stuff that they simply can't remember anymore. As Kenny said when he came over in November, he and Leon spent the best part of 20 years locked in the studio only dimly aware of what what going on outside 'cos they were too busy with the next session! Ian Seaman Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 christ i have only just bought the TM remixes 4 CD set and now this, is it just me or is a tad too much being rushed out !!
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 christ i have only just bought the TM remixes 4 CD set and now this, is it just me or is a tad too much being rushed out !! Not rushed Ian LOL. Both the Moulton package and the 10 CD box set were actually delayed! Moulton should've been out in January and the box set for February, so, as my boss keeps on telling me, I'm waaaaay behind! However, yes, I am trying to get as many releases as possible out whilst the market is still holding up. Who knows what'll happen in another couple of years or so.......? Ian D
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 (edited) Finished copies came up today and I'm happy to say that it's absolutely beautiful! I can't even bring myself to open mine LOL. That Amazon price is ridiculously tempting I have to say. I reckon this level of package would normally be in the £60-£70 level! Ian Dewhirst Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 Any chance that the Cecil Womack produced Peace Int track by Young Disciples (group name may be wrong ?) will gain release as part of one of the proposed CD sets ?? Roburt Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 IAN, being totally selfish ..... every unissued Philly Int Jones Girls & / or Shirley jones track available. Love the Jones Girls stuff (almost) as much as I love The Emotions Volt cuts.
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 IAN, being totally selfish ..... every unissued Philly Int Jones Girls & / or Shirley jones track available. Love the Jones Girls stuff (almost) as much as I love The Emotions Volt cuts. Yep, don't worry, we'll be pulling all the Jones Girls tracks we don't recognise. We've got hold of a PIR master tape list so we're going through that now! There's loads of stuff on the list including lots of none PIR but Sigma Sound studio recorded masters which have ended up in PIR's possesssion. Looks like it could be a treasure trove. The only problem is that we have to choose carefully as the system for pulling and transferring the tapes is not cheap! Ian D 1
Roburt Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Love the 'remix' releases ..... have too many orig PI cuts on vinyl (45 & LP) + some CD's to invest in the big box set but can't wait for the Rareties & unissued stuff.

phillyDaveG Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Any chance that the Cecil Womack produced Peace Int track by Young Disciples (group name may be wrong ?) will gain release as part of one of the proposed CD sets ?? It's Young Delegation, they released 1 LP & 1 45 on Peace Int.
Guest smoothwasson Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 It'll be a lifelong investment Martin. Ian D i do
Guest smoothwasson Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Hot on the heels of Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes we're proud to announce the forthcoming release of....... 2. Ian D ooohhhh gonna treat myself to this one xx
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 Looking good can't wait for it to be delivered. Far be it from me to hype one of my own releases Daryl but this is just a beautiful body of work to own. Also, as someone pointed out the other day, at the current Amazon price, it works out at a quid a year for the last 40 years of PIR which has to be a bargain whichever way you look at it. This release is currently pre-selling at the same rate as a normal Harmless release which is pretty incredible in the current climate. You'll be well happy mate. Tell everyone in Hull to buy it! Ian D
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 ooohhhh gonna treat myself to this one xx Twelve and a half hours of impeccably brilliant music and 175 beautifully produced, arranged and written songs from the masters of the game in a state-of-the-art box with a 60 page booklet including the full Mighty Three discography......? Go on. Spoil yourself. You deserve it and it'll last you the rest of your life. It's the bargain of the century and probably better than sex! Ian D
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) It's Young Delegation, they released 1 LP & 1 45 on Peace Int. Already several mentions of this track from various sources, so one for the forthcoming projects I suspect Dave....? I'm kinda excited because tomorrow morning a whole heap of national journalists and major radio DJ's will be pouring over your discography with their morning coffees wondering why they've never heard half of the listings LOL.... Dick Jensen's incredible "New York City's A Lonely Town" which Richard Searling has been championing just lately is already getting wider attention which is pretty incredible for a 'forgotten' 40 year old record. Sounds phenomenal though. It's such a gas that Philly International is getting such widespread recognition again from all sectors of the media. It's important that music of this pedigree is getting major attention again 'cos most current music can't touch it. All good and I can't thank you enough for allowing us to finally print your full discography. Over 2000 people will be feverishly reading through it in 10 days time! Ian D Edited May 10, 2012 by Ian Dewhirst 1
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 10, 2012 Author Posted May 10, 2012 IAN, being totally selfish ..... every unissued Philly Int Jones Girls & / or Shirley jones track available. Love the Jones Girls stuff (almost) as much as I love The Emotions Volt cuts. Well you're in luck there Roburt 'cos ALL the unknown Jones Girls and Shirley Jones masters have automatically been selected already due to Ralph Tee's unhealthy obsession with all PIR things with the 'Jones' moniker..........sound familiar? Ian D
phillyDaveG Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I've just received mine today Ian, tx. t is indeed a thing of rare beauty. The booklet looks superb.
Guest phillybuster Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I've been championing Dick Jensen's "New York City Is A Lonely Town" for 39 years.
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 I've been championing Dick Jensen's "New York City Is A Lonely Town" for 39 years. Good on ya Phillbuster. I missed it completely but I still have my UK Epic copy of his version of "I Don't Wanna Cry"....... Ian D 1
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 I've just received mine today Ian, tx. t is indeed a thing of rare beauty. The booklet looks superb. Glad you like it Dave. I sent PIR's finished copies off today so fingers crossed that they'll feel the same! I bet it was nice to finally see your discography in full glory! Best, Ian
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 (edited) No.1 on Amazon's Hot New Releases In Compilation Chart...... https://www.amazon.co...E17RF32DKTEE3ZA In fact we're firing up a few charts....... https://www.amazon.co...=zg_bs_694308_1 Wow. We've seen a phenomenal pre-sale on this - it's actually pre-selling at a faster rate than a normal Harmless goodie, which is brilliant news. If all those UK sales convert, then we'll be looking at being the first 10 CD Box Set to hit the Top 40 Compilation Chart which will be a gas! In fact it looks like we'll need to repress by this Friday if it carries on at the same rate. Just nuts. If you want the first edition order quickly! Ian D Edited May 16, 2012 by Ian Dewhirst
Jimmy Mack Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Cheers Dave. Ian D good job your not doing a motown one (haha),as it would be 100 cd box set ,then you would have the unreleased stuff as well..
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 good job your not doing a motown one (haha),as it would be 100 cd box set ,then you would have the unreleased stuff as well.. Absolutely! I could totally do with a 100 CD Motown Box Set! My Motown collection is scattered around the house via hundreds of vinyl and CD's. I'd LOVE everything in a huge box set. It'd save me hours of dicking around searching for particular tracks..... Ian D
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 22, 2012 Author Posted May 22, 2012 Yippee! No.16 on the first UK Compilation chart midweek! PIR back in the top 20 again! Ian D
jocko Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 And Memphis in the top ten, take a bow Kent! It really is an amazing time for availability of music, I am loving your stuff Ian but Kent are just so fantastic at moment hopefully you don't mind me mentioning it. Hopefully all on here buying both........... 1
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 23, 2012 Author Posted May 23, 2012 A GREAT 38 minute You Tube interview with Kenny Gamble and Ralph Tee coming up. All edited and looking just fine and awaiting approval from PIR and then we'll release it. Holding beautifully at No.19 on todays midweek! Here's some picks from HMV Oxford Street @ 8.00pm tonight..... Racked In The Hit Section Random Guy Reaches For Philly Box Set Random Guy Studies Back Of Box Set And Proceeds To Checkout Ralph Tee Understands The Inherent Beauty Of Mid Store HMV Racking Hey, we're competing with Ministry Of Sound albums and TV advertised mainstream compilations at this level. This shit is really exciting LOL.... Ian D
phillyDaveG Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 It's been bugging me because the box set kept reminding me of something. I figured it out today, it looks like a large box of John Player Special cigarettes circa 1980
