Roburt Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 This was Ted Jarrett & Robert Holme's label wasn't it (well they were responsible for most of the music released on the label if they didn't actually own it). Didn't Kent put out a good CD of the best cuts from the label some years back ? Ted went on to run the TJaye label (along with Robert Holmes & Freddie Waters) & cut loads more good stuff.
Steve G Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Yes, Jarrett was a Nashville legend, other labels will be familiar to northern folk, Poncello, Spar etc. Ref-O-Ree was Jarrett's label, and ran from 68 to 73. Kent's Music City Soul is the one to cover the label, and there is also a budget CD done in 2007 with a number of the same tracks. I know all this because I am doing a Ted Jarrett special on my next SUnday Afternoon Soul show, so have been doing a bit of research on his productions, songs and labels. Still no info on the Precious 3 though or Spice opt Life though! Steve 1

45cellar Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Peggy Gaines Just to satisfy my baby Ref O Ree 711 >>> <<< There are different versions of this depending on the Deadwax. Unfortunately Refosouls not working. Deadwax Markings. R-711-X - Strings Foreground - PIANO ? R-711-A - Strings in the Background. (PIANO Foreground) Don't know if one is rarer than the other or Luck of the draw. I bought them from Soul Bowl in the 70's. The Labels are Identical, here are the two different Deadwax Markings above.

Always liked this neat little double-sider from Rufus: "Hold On (Just A Little Bit Longer)/These Are My People" Ref.O.Ree 733 Family pedigree with him being Herbert's younger brother. Dave

Still have the LP somewhere on Move and pretty sure I have a couple of 7"' white labels of 2 of the tracks that Move had done, can't remember if they actually released anything on the 7"s though.

Roburt Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 RE: Did this LP get a release in US before Move YEP, but only very limited press so its as hard to find on US as rocking horse sh**. Had a totally different cover (front picture / sleeve notes, etc) to the Move version.
Tricky Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Never seen the second Peggy Gaines release. Has anybody heard it? Wheres Dave Halsall when you need him i know he collects this label.
Steve G Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 She only had one issued on the label. Two versions with the same number Flynny has told us. The other one people are quoting was unissued at the time - big 90s discovery and subsequently put out by Kent.

Ok confused! i know about When the boy that you love unissued until Kent but there is a second release by her listed in the discography. Does this exist.

Steve G Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 (edited) I cannot remember ever seeing 726....and I am sure if it was good, we'd have heard it by now. Looks like an old Hit Records repackage possibly?.....Steve PS: Roburt - agree a credible version of Marvellettes Edited March 20, 2012 by Steve G

Cobbles Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 wendell watts "kiss a goodthing goodbye" reforee is an old guy h / butch spin that seems to rarely come up for sale
Steve G Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Yes it'sd a tremendous record and in the box for the show as well. Something funny about the recording though, think they tried to process it in stereo....
Stillsoulin Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 only just got round to reading this thread, missed steves show too so apologies if mentioned there, ref o ree 718 monterey goodbye, this is an instrumental version of Just the other day, johnny truitt to my ears. what do you think. rob.
Steve G Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Rob, you haven't missed it, it's this Sunday. Never heard the instrumental of Johnny Truitt though.
Stillsoulin Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Steve, its very middle of the road really, but the intro pricked my ears up when i heard it.
Reforee Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Phew where do you wanna start or pick up? Peggy Gaines 2 takes of the same record. Don't know which one came first. This track is the most available track of the label. Suspect first run was not enough copies and then the wrong cut was remastered. have a letter from Ted Jarrett stating all the stock that was not sold was literally skipped when he moved and he cleared the garage out. Both versions are great. Only difference is an X or A in the matrix number from memory. The label is full of perhaps every genre of Soul music and with one exception (in my view) are all quaIity tracks. It goes without saying I love the label and Mr Jarrett and Mr Holmes are in my book up there along side the Berry Gordys of the Soul music world.
