Ljblanken Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I run a monthly small-scale pub night and this young guy who comes frequently told me the Brothers Johnson were his uncles. I would like to play something from them for him, but I normally play more 60s stuff and the vids of Bros Johnson i see on youtube are not that appealing to me (mild synth-funk). does anyone know of anything interesting from them that i could acquire that i could play for him without making me barf? thanks!
Garethx Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 "Deceiver" on an A&M 45 is great modern soul. Could once have been a big record on the UK scene, but wasn't. "Strawberry Letter 23" is a classic of course and even better than the Shuggie Otis original for my money.
boba Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I haven't listened to a lot of his catalog, but I also would recommend strawberry letter 23, one of their biggest hits and should satisfy nephews who might not know their uncle's obscure songs. It's also less synth funk.
corby john Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 "i'll be good to you"................is a nice mid-tempo mover from them.
Guest Polyvelts Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Gotta agree with Gareth and Bob, 'strawberry letter 23' is a stone classic. And light water soul could check out brothers Grimm version of 'looky looky' which ain't bad but got nothing on STOMP Altogether now.... EVERYBODY TAKE IT TO THE TOP - WE GONNA STOMP - ALL NIGHT ! IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ! DON'T IT FEEL ALRIGHT !!!!!!!!
Steve Plumb Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 'I'll be good to you' is a classic funky soul stepper to me!
Ljblanken Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 thanks to everyone - will sift through these suggestions. why couldn't his uncles be Just Brothers!?
Daved Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Stomp is a classic. Love it! Strawberry Letter 23 is probably more up your street.
Citizen P Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I'd say Strawberry Letter 23 & I'll be Good to you Also Streetwave I quite like as well. Tony
John Reed Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) Ive always liked You Keep Me Coming Back which is probably a bit too Boogie for most on here. Edited March 12, 2012 by John Reed
Guest SteveJohnston Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Brill track John imo another one that could be played out at a soul night is "it's you girl" from the BLAM lp Steve J
