or does there seem to be a massive slew of reissues coming out at the moment, more than usual?

Far too many, and a lot of them of stuff that's not really that expensive as an original either, WTF is that all about?!

thats was pretty much where i was going with this. is there a real need to reissue so many records which are available reasonably cheaply?

Your right , but somebody's buying em.

The scenes oldies obsessed in some quarters.

I recently decided to sell off my old (I so mean old)boots, to fund some new originals.

Doing this has broadend my knowledge of what's out there, whilst getting some nice new (to me) tunes

which I wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford.

Looking forward to receiving the Black Nasty LP on the way at the mo.

I always associated these 'look-a-like' boots/re-issues with northern oldies, but it seems the less mainstream tunes are now even being booted. For example, just seen that Continental Showstoppers has been re-issued (not usre about legality so couldn't comment). Now i know the Continental Showstoppers is not exactly classed as an up front sound anymore, but it's not exactly an oldie either. It wouldn't be played at oldies nights on a regular basis i wouldn't have thought. Begs the questions then, why re-issue it?? It's not rare, not that expensive and whilst there is demand for it in terms of having the sound on a record format, the demand would probably not be that of say Yvonne Vernee, which seems to be a popular bootleg piece. And the audience buying it (i.e. 'the demand') would likely have an OVO policy.

it was the continental showstoppers reissue which prompted my question, its not a massively expensive record and at the same time i wouldnt say a mainstream record so why reissue it. i have been pondering for some time why so many are coming out when thy just dont seem necessary

For the money-greedy-couldnt really give a shit about the scene as long as im making a living bastards that are bootlegging/re-issuing them obviously yes!

There is a much larger market for reissue 45s than the UK rare soul scene. Lots of random younger DJs or even collector types will go to the record store, see a new, cool sounding 45, and buy it. Those people don't care about "OVO" or the northern scene (for example, they might DJ at a bar and play a mix of reggae, soul, funk, psych, etc.).

if that's the market for these records, of course the people reissuing them don't care about the relatively insular UK rare soul scene -- those people are not even necessarily aware of the scene. Also, if it's a legit reissue and the producers and writers are getting paid, the dealer's actions are less greedy than someone who would rather protect the sanctity of their scene (especially when a reissue probably does very little to the scene except give people something to bitch about) at the expense of the people who made the music getting paid.

I had a recent post appear small like this and I don't think I changed any of the default settings.

The version oif I have no choice on the black nasy LP is great. I believe she was the mother or related in some way to one of black nasy which explains why.
