Djs They Never Stay All Night! Mini Or Otherwise

Recommended Posts

Be a dj mate they never stay all night mini or otherwise

I will start this thread as a comment as it was fueled by Tez's ( Peggy Babcock) comment above on the Mini Niter thread!,,,,

I have as most people who know me have done soul nights and nighters from when i was a kid in the very early 70s,,,, and enjoyed staying to the end of niters and then to the services ,, friends place or a dayer etc.

As that awefull cliche says it really is a way of life after that long,,,,,

Cutting a very long probably boring story short in 2004 i had a Mini Stroke ,,i was very lucky and within a few months i got back to a level were i could enjoy the scene still to the full,,,

Two years later my best friend Nige Shaw died with heart complications after a by pass ,,,

That was when the Original Middleton was the t he countrys no 1 all niter,,,, after Shawy died i did one more FULL niter ,,, and it made me come to terms with things!!

Ive NEVER Done a FULL All Niter or Mini Niter Since

If im booked for a Nighter i always ask for an Early or Not to late spot or i cant do it!!

In short i value my health ,,, SIMPLES!

I have a standing joke with Dave Rivers about leaving Nighters early ,,,

Most time i arrive at a venue just after the start so some times im at the ACTUAL venue LONGER than some people who arrive at the nighter after midnight!! But that doenmt seem to count !!

In some peoples eyes Yeah im a lightweight ( piss off Eccles lol) DJ who leaves early ,,, but after this long i dont have to prove anything as a DJ or collector to anyone,,,If ya dissagree thats your problem not mine,,,

It might be different for other Scene DJs ,,,

I love this music and will attend whenever i can,,, but i WILL leave a venue when i fookin want to !!

Nige B

Nobody has to explain their actions regarding going to nighters NIge, it's a personal choice, anybody who knows you, knows you're ''proper''.

Well said that man, the way he goes on about folk not wanting to stay till silly oclock is just childish nonsense, it's a simple choice, you either wanna or ya don't, how it makes someone a more qualified, hardcore soulie is cringeworthy from an adult,

Though am struggling as to how 'lightwieght' can be aimed at you Nidgey :g:

No disrespect to Nige but I think we all know of DJ's, either at Nighter's or Soul Night's who do their spot then Piss off,

I find this ignorant and disrespectfull, smacks of take the money and run.

If you don't wanna be there then don't go, or is it cos they do the gig for the Kudos of playing a particular nighter or soul night.

All I know is that when I see em buggering off, I say good riddance.

I never saw Karl Heard bugger off early and there will never be a DJ like him.

if you wanna go early nige...you do...dont have to explain it....although i do think a dj should GET there early...dont like seeing djs turn up half hour before there set...unless they've been djing elsewhere ofcourse or stuck in traffic..but know a couple of seen do this on more than one occasion...

Too right nige i've always found you very welcoming and somebody who has been on the scene as long as you has nothing to prove to anybody. Somebody must have pissed you off for you to go into writing. Sad realy that people have these ideas about what others can and can't do.

I agree with Nige, some of us, maybe due to living in the fast lane in the 70s/80s do suffer from health problems. I understand wher Nige is coming from, being a casual DJ nowadays I have to leave early sometimes. I had a heart attack at 32, then at 34 a triple bypass, then went an all nighter the same day I came out of hospital.. 3 years go I had brain surgery due to a sub achnoid haemerage, but always at a venue early.

So why the crittasiam ??????

Nige , just let me say , youve been on this scene 40 yrs , longer than most , you've nothing to prove , you are dead right in valueing your health , id rather go home early and live to see another day than spend a few more hours knackered and spoiling the next day recovering. Soul will ALWAYS be there, long after we are all 6ft under. Anyway , bout time you came round for a wendesday coffee & catchup bro. X

I would have thought the thing that riles people is not a dj leaving early, but the quite selfish habit of turning up for their own slot then leaving straight afterwards. Not sure where the 'money' part comes into it though lol

Someone has upset you, ain't they Nigel? You're normally quite laid back, I did happen to say to you upstairs in the record room at lifeline, it's a rare night "What are you doing here?" and a little hug as i was only joking. To me Nige you will always be hardcore, as Chalky said you never have a break, so hold your head high and keep on keeping on.

nige lad,

i remember well when that unfortunate incident happened in 2004...about 3 weeks later, i think, you came to prestwich...everyone was stunned when it happened, but when you returned to the longfield suite, you were welcomed with open arms mate. ive always considered you a top bloke, a great laugh and a very knowledgeable anorak...long may you continue to be...you give 110% in every set you do and you actually LOVE every record you play.

...im an old fooker as well and do i stay til the old brandy ball pops its head up?.....yeah right!...even ruppy says im off to cuddle up to the teddy & hot water bottle...he even accused me of coming to the kings in me jim-jams  YOU dont have to justify nowt...so we'll see you and the good lady carms in the windsor suite...no time to be yawning in there!!

I think a lot of the remarks which tend to come from the same source are pathetic. Some no mark who thinks he can add the odd one liner so many times on here to just make trouble , he knows best in all things :tumbleweed3: .... trouble junky waving his hardcore flag , well lets face it thats the only thing thats ever gonna get hard in his life. ... I would like to see him do half what you do Nige .. best thing to do with that sort is ignore them ...... end of you don't need to justify anything to anyone .

This post could cost me a life .... but hey ho it will be worth it

Well said Carms

There's far too many prophets trying to preach that "their" way is the right way :sleep3: I'm not saying that "their" way is the wrong way, just most of us like to swing both ways :wicked: or swing all ways :D and why not!! People should learn to be more tolerant of each other, and other's ways, for chuffs sake we've all got "soul" in common.

It's ridiculous, & I even felt the need the other day to justify that my wearing and dancing (well, dancing in a fashion :D ) in heels doesn't make me any less a lover of soul.

It's barmy, and I feel even barmier for being drawn into this, when really all I should do is stick "two fingers up" at the posts I don't like and move on. Which is what I'm going to do now (move on that is, not stick two fingers up at your post)

All the best

I know a Soul Night maybe 'Sunday League' to some but same principle. When I was promoting I always paid each D.J straight after their set, said thank you very much and if they decided to go home early it was up to them. I was kind of making that point to them by paying them as soon as they had 'Done their duty'

There should be no presure on anyone or it just pushes them away.

All the best,

Len.

Very good point

It just grates sometimes when you are travelling hundreds of miles on a round trip, paying your money,

helping to keep the venue going (and there have been promoters on here stating if peeps don't come through the door, the venue wil close)

then you just see the DJ piss off straight after his set, you just wonder sometimes, is it bloody worth it frusty2.gif

I think may main bone of contension here is the Guest DJ (Soul Night or Niter) who arrive just before there spot or late the leave the venue immediatley after!! I hate that meself its rude and gives us all the bad name!!

And i mean DJs who do that regulally ,,,,, we all have moments were we have got lost or had traffic problems even in the age of the Sat Nav!!

As ive said bfore personally i try to arrive early as poss ,,,, and i personall do not leave straight away as i need a bit or warm down time ,,,,, sounds stupid i know but thats me!!

The only time ive left early was a Soul Night in Ramsbottom last year where i became ill while DJing and left stariaght after my set ,,, i cant think of another time ive left staight away!!

The other way round 2 years ago at Whitby i fell fast asleep at the hotel and was ten minutes late for my spot that night ,,,, but idid stay till the end of the evening

I find it interesting that after all the Whooo Ha no one yet has has the Balls to Name and Shame

Thats is why i was open and honest with everone on here

and that's from a DJ who does turn up at the beginning and stay till the end. Having said that I know Nige probably does more events than me these days. I tend to just do one a weekend now, and I know Nige sometimes does three (Although last weekend I did three if we are counting). It's not about how many hours you put in though, it's about enjoying yourself, it's a night out for Christ's sake. You do what you want to do Nige, you'll always have my respect.

You have it spot on Nige

Theres no need to name and shame, the DJ's that do it know who they are.

It's not a case of being a key board warrior either, (like I said earlier it just grates sometimes) and

lots of people know me and I always announce which nighters I will be attending.

Is there really any 'Naming and Shaming' to be done here? Surely there's not D.J's that actually do turn up just before their spot, then go home soon after, especially on a regular basis? Correct me if I'm wrong but I've always thought this a bit of an 'urban myth'

Maybe some big name on the oldiers scene that makes a 'cameo' appereance because of who they are / what their history is? This is a question not a hint at anyone I can think of.

Anyway, there's no rule in The Northern Soul Rule Book that states you can't actually do this - I just checked :D

All the best,

Len.
