As the Northern Soul "modern" slides off to the left towards a much funkier rhythm, this obscurity sound absolutely PERFECT for dancefloor appreciation.

But it's more that just a funky dance grooves, classy jazz influenced riffs, a vocal delivered from an angry standpoint, instrumental breaks that hark back to the Jazz-Funk fever that o0verhelmed the Northern Soul scene in the early 80s.

His collaborations with Ray Charles created some real beauties. But NONEget anywhere near to competing with this out-of-control juggernaut of a production.

It sounds like Ray's full orchestra is there, the Raelets screaming their appreciative chorus, as the horn section super-charges the session up to a level ready to match Ray's signature growl.

Isn't it good when you see an old friend you haven't seen for years.

I can't even remember the last time we had this Wigan Casino / Cleethorpes Pier Northern Soul anthem for sale. But I do know it was a promo copy - because the STOCK copy, well you just never see, do you.

Click the soundfile to evoke visions of spinning girls in wide pleated skirts rising to parasol position. The guys in their vests, baggy "Spencers" lazily dropping back on their palms to rise, with hands in the air to copy the rhythmic handclaps, discreetly hidden behind those pumping horns.

Circa 1974/75 was a period in Northern Soul history when the most important aspect of the night was to have a good time.

This USA written and British crafted 45 in drenched in "good-time" moments. THe skilled writing team of Jerry Fuller & Mark Barkan ensured "Soul Orientated Brit" Johnny Harris had the tools to work with...the result?

Jealous Kind Of Fella

British MCA issued that wonderful Clyde McPhatter album and a procession of Jackie Wilson lps. So when I was a young lad, I did hope and wonder for many years that MCA UK may have released this masterpiece.

So just imagine my delight, when just last week, I find copy complete with laminated 60s UK style sleeve and the MCA logo at the bottom. I can tell you my heart raced like I'd woke up next to Beyonce...

This is the AUSTRALIAN 1969 release - but being a pom I never knew it even existed, so my excited dropped only a little to the level of two "Hairy Bikers" laying beside me.

Then running my hand over laminated cover, reading the fab notes on the back. Then cascading through my head were "Girl I Love You" "Ain't That Good Enough" Forty Day and Nights" "Angel Baby" etc. I was right back up there again, feeling like that dusky Texas maiden was now downstairs cooking me a full English breakfast.

To an old soul-anorak like me, finding this album, in these clothes so similar to the "fantasy" Brit-release, is darn exciting.

Blues-man Eli Anderson gives us some Deep-down n' dirty stuff to consider. Instant bass line demand to to dance, then the snarling vocal smashes through. Briefly softened by a bongo rhythm, this is quickly squashed by some wildly enthusiastic soul-gal who does a stand-alone chorus.

With the horns and the relentless driving rhythm fuse into one helluva session - that is just about as "dirty" as one R&B record could ever get -LOVE IT!

Select-A-Disc Arkwright Street, Nottingham a Saturday pilgrimage for so many Soul-Boys 1971/1972. I would look forward all week to my fix of Soul. Down the wooden ladder style steps into the cellar of vinyl - this was theSOUL basement, no bigger than a posh-man's toilet.

The anticipation of what was new, what could we take home with us today was a pulse quickening experience. J. J. Barnes - Please Let Me In, Al Kent - The Way You've Been Acting Lately, Roy Hamilton - Crackin' Up Over You had just been re-issued by RCA. We were in Soul-Boy heaven.

Just as we turned to climb those rickety steps, the mischievous Denny behind the counter, turned up the volume and dropped the needle on SAM &KITTY...

Daaa,Da, Daa, Da, Daaa - I got Something Good !! My God, me and my mate "Kipper" nearly died...I'd never heard anything like it in my life... gotta have it..was it for sale? No, it certainly wasn't.. but if I came to the BRIT CLUBtonight I could hear it again.

The yearning to own this record was so bad, months later I sold my soul to the Devil and purchased the bootleg of this now massive "Golden Torch anthem".

This has just emerged from an "Old School" collection accumulated during the Golden Days of Martin Koppel sending his Motor City vinyl harvests over-the-pond to enthusiastic British-Soul-Freshmen.

It has sat inside one of those poly-inner brown card sleeves, that just smell of 1972.

Thinking of finding MINT - examples of records of this pedigree in 2012 is frankly just "A Soul Boys Dream"
