Guest Andy BB Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Well I'm gutted, I've just visited your site at https://www.thesoulgirl.com/html/northernsoul.php and am alarmed to discover that I am definitely not a soul fan. I wonder how many people are? "The Soul Fan may sell a favourite sound that is on an original label because it is available on CD, and with the extra money he/she can purchase more CDs or pressings..." I think your "Class Three" is more than a tad harsh "The original soul record collector...may well refuse to own pressings or CDs...they are not soul fans" Do you actually know someone who refuses to own music on tape or CD?

Guest Stuart T Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Tin hats please everyone! Category 5 Peroxide Spencer wearers who spout off on websites about how awful people who dare to collect original records are.
Tomangoes Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 To be fair, Soulgirl is only quoting from another site. The 3 classes defo cover all bases though and will touch a few nerves. When a Japanese punter offered £150 for my cracked 'UJIMA' it had to go. Sorry but 150xprofit could not resist. Ive got it on CD now (Oops I should not have admitted to that) Down the Class 'snakes and ladders' I go. Ed

Guest Trevski Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) Class Three (the original soul record collector) The Original Soul Record Collector this is the elitist class, this class do not belong to the class of Soul Fans, they are not soul fans . Â I would have thought it was love of soul music in its purest form (i.e. original) that seperates class 3 from the rest! They are not driven by the love of soul music. But by the love of collecting (viz. soul records). Bollocks! I love my soul music so much I only want the REAL DEAL, not rip-off counterfeit versions. Owning the original copy of a tune is like a time machine, it's the nearest you will get to the day they went into the studio and cut it! It was the original disc they pinned their hopes and dreams on, not some bootleg! This class comes over as "snobs" as regard to soul records and may well refuse to own pressings or CDs. Utter tripe! Pressings yes, CD's no, I can't think of any 'Original only' collectors that don't have CD's totaly different medium, totaly different thing! This class once belonged to the second class but have lost sight of the nature of soul music and have been caught up by pride and vanity. Lost sight?? it is only the people seeking out rare, unknown originals that keep the scene going, and provide new material for the bootleggers to sell on to the 'Soul Fans"!! They love nothing better than telling you the value of a record and how few copies exist. Contrast the Soul Fan who loves nothing better than listening to the record and loves to play them for you too. So class 3 don't love to listen & play the records?? I would place all PROPER DJ's in class 3!! I know Soulgirl didn't write this herself, but it is a tad disparaging on many like me. CLASS 3 AND PROUD OF IT!!! Edited December 5, 2005 by Trevski

Who wrote it, anybody know. Would probably come under category A by the way, don't overly care about the format. Do think whoever wrote it was a little harsh on the cat C's, can't believe people would collect something if they didn't like/admire it in some way. Winnie:-)

Whoa there Lesley!!! I don't know if it was the link I put in the soulclub thread that drew Andy to your site Karen. I never bothered reading the front page stuff to be honest as most visits are at lunchtime - work, where time is precious. But maybe these dudes have got too much time on their hands
Guest Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Karen, you are passionate, nobody doubts this, i know you and your an upfront in your face "love the music" type of girl ..but you can't be disparaging to Vinyl collectors, you know full well that original vinyl is the backbone of the scene and always will be, i have many, many friends on this scene that collect and also many that don't, both are passionate and love the music equally, but the folks that don't collect fully understand and respect the core element of the Vinyl junkies, without these we would just be another music genre...The element of those rare records gives us an elitism (all of us,collectors and non collectors) and that is something to be proud of. So come on your as much a part of this scene as the guy/girl with the "Million Pound Rarity". just don't bite the hand that feeds you. Ps don't let B********* like me and the others get to you..we are just puysscats and would run like wharf rats cornered in a brothel by armed gangs wielding tyre irons Brett
Guest Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) Thing is Brett, I am never disparaging to collectors.. it's such a shame that collectors aren't so forgiving for us that don't collect. It's not the plastic that does it for me, it's the music. And I don't bite any hand, I have no need to.. do I? I'm not going to post any more tonight... I think my hormones are in charge LOL Edited December 5, 2005 by Soulgirl

I truely love this music, don't have thousand's of pound's of record, but fully appreciate black vinyl, label's and cost oh and refuse to own pressing's!. Label's and cost are all a part of the scene and who said"if you don't collect your not worthy"?. Quote: This scene will die soon if everyone keep's up this pretence that northern soul is about a small black piece of vinyl/acetate! How would n.soul exist today without that black vinyl? What keep's the scene going and not dying after all these year's is that little piece of Black Vinyl Dj's up and down the country play week in, week out.!! Karen

Guest Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Karen your words...... For Me, Northern Soul means danceable, smoochable, BIG PRODUCTION sounds.. including all my favorite drums, brass, woods, glocks, Xylophones, strings and a bloody good black vocal. Need I say more? More so it means to hell with the bollocks of what the elite'ests say! It's not about how much the record costs, what label it is on or even what media you choose to use. It's about the music... simple as that! Just because you don't collect doesn't mean you're not worthy. This scene will die soon if everyone keeps up this pretence that northern soul is about a small black piece of vinyl/acetate! Play it how you like and let it live on. Wouldn't that make him "Prett"? Good job you and Jo collect records, otherwise i'd be oiling my Austrailian Dog Whip.......

Guest Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Don't suggest that I am not grateful for uncovered records.. that would be insane. It would be suggesting that comedy didn't draw from Charlie Chaplin or Morcambe and Wise. Thing is, comics of today don't need the original film footage. Things have moved on technically, of course we celebrate those that took time out, got dusty heads and had orgasms in dark cellars. The future will not celebrate that, lets be honest. Take my 10 year old Daughter. She LOVES soul but hasn't the least interest in where it came from... yet.... yet being the operative word. First you have to give birth, then you have to educate. It's the educate then give birth mentality I can't relate to.
