It was opened to give anyone a chance to play, plus the chance for the established DJs to play something different to the norm.

Not a strict policy in there hence Freestyle and a CD player is also available for tracks issued on CD only.

agreed nigel, by all accounts he loves and respects his music and, as you say, stringing a set together is such an important skill in dee-jaying. Too many dee-jays don't know what to play or why they are playing it but i've heard this young lad was very, very good, long may he reign. We're all gonna need someone to dee-jay at our wakes as time goes by, i think he's probably gonna be last one standing and walk right into that post

Hi all, at the age of 14 I do my best to keep my sets OVO. I would rather play a few re-issues and pack the floor than play OVO and have an empty floor, of the 6 re-issues I played all were legitimate and the floor was packed (I am counting Betty Boo as OVO as it is the first pressing of Grapevine and was not released.) I love my music and I am proud of my collection, it's not easy collecting Northern Soul and soul snobbery kicks in and people are too quick to judge, I probably did £890 worth of records in my set and at the age of 14 I feel that's something to be proud of, I shouldn't have to be explaining myself as it is being made out, on here and facebook, I have committed a terrible crime, for heavens sake, I PLAYED THE RECORDS THE CROWD WANTED! Anyway rant over, KTF! T x

Well I danced to quite a few of your records youngun, and enjoyed the spot immensely, bearing in mind our ages a couple of slower ones might help next time, or at least give me time to get my inhaler out and have a puff   Fair play to you

I enjoyed your set mate and was loving Shane Martin and the others and danced to them. Nige and the others are 100% right it doesn't matter if anyone plays legit reissues. Betty Boo is a class record and I doubt anyone would think twice about spinning it on Grapevine, I certainly wouldn't, I love it.

Like Terry says though, it's not about value. Don't ever fall into the trap of saying you can't collect or play only originals because you can't afford to, it just isn't true (even aged 14). There are thousands of cheap originals out there.

Btw while we were listening to you Charlie Mc said to me, 'he must have one hell of a paper round'

Good luck.

£ 890? but whose counting eh so Gwen & G &T;s wew boots, as there is a cd player there you coulda just stuck on the "best allniter ever" and saved your money and let some dance yet again to the same stuff THE CROWD WANTED to dance too . Why is it peeps seem to think original vinyl means expensive? And those that play boots only play imitation big sounds pretending their playing original vinyl? In Dublin theres kids turning me onto tunes that don't cost much. Youngun well done for having the nerve to playout but dont go down the line of becoming a wannabee chequebook dj, bring something different to the scene, its what keeps the scene fresh

Hello everyone

It was my first time at Rugby but certainly won't be my last; I had a fantastic time. Of the sets that I heard (& danced to; spent most of my time in small room) the ones I enjoyed most were Tom's, Harpo's & Pat's. That's not to do down any other sets I heard all or part of. My favourite sound all night was the utterly amazing track Pat played off the Martha Bass LP. Having said that, I'm very new to the scene & don't know much about the music, let alone what's an original, a reissue, a bootleg or whatever. I think in that respect I'm lucky 'cos there seem to be so many issues I don't have to worry about. Tom, please don't take this the wrong way, but I don't care how old you are or how much you had to spend on what you played; what I care about is that you play great stuff, that you obviously enjoy doing so & that you give so many people so much pleasure by doing so. That's why I asked you where else you'd be playing in future. Thanks to all the DJs who posted their set lists on here; please can anyone who knows Pat ask her to post hers if she's OK with that? Cheers!

Love to all

Richard

I think a lot of you are missing the point, you may not be bothered about how old I am or how much I had to spend on what you played, but a lot of people on the soul scene DO CARE about this sort of stuff. I like the 'big sounds' as that is what puts the 'Soul' in Northern Soul it has the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid-1960s Tamla Motown sound that makes them 'big sounds' and that is what I like and I am going to play. Okay yes the record may however, generally eschew Motown or Motown-influenced music that has met with significant mainstream success but thats the whole point of it. Most of the records I played have been exhumed and exalted in the 70's and that is still the case today. I don't see the point of bringing something different to the scene as why try and fix something that works? To begin with the notoriety of DJs on the northern soul scene was enhanced by the possession of rare records, but today the next generation are slowly making there way through. Now to be fair some people are giving me seconds thoughts of even bothering so, if anyone has a problem with me playing a set with Re-issues, sequencing together a collection of records to create euphoric highs and lows for the crowd, and trying to live up to the high expectations of the Northern Soul while doing this, they quite frankly know where to go.

you like what you like and good on ya and your young and enthusiastic and if promoters like what you play and have no problem with re-issues (cant see why not) then you go ahead and do your thing and entertain, dont let anyone tell you what you can buy or should buy you buy what you like and express yourself when you do get a chance to dj, be your own man but most of all enjoy :hatsoff2:

Had this very same discussion with two guys....possibly Kerby and casper? at Brookfields recently.

Whilst I fully understand that the top DJ`s may have spent lots of time and money amassing great collections and hats off to them, the truth of the matter is that punters just want to hear and dance to great tunes so whether they are OV or bootleg,re-issues makes little odds and it is more than likely that the future generation DJ,s will have to play copies as OV is becoming rarer and more expensive.

PS. personaly as a punter I would dance to any copy of Eddie Parker "I`m Gone" anytime, at any venue.. if it was copy or not, and I`m pretty sure I wouldn`t be on my own on this.

Seems to be making a mockery of chalky's poll, make no wonder he's closed it.

Personally I agree with the poll.

To be fair, it was just a poll, not a new set of rules that promoters or DJs have to stick to

I know mate and i was definitely not having a go at the Lad.

I just think it's a shame he didn't complete his full set with OVO.

He obviously has a talent and knows how to work a dance floor, for such a young age thats no mean feat :hatsoff2:

I think if anyone has has nothing positive to say, don't bother posting. Unless you have all the records I played on the Original labels then yes maybe you have a right to comment. I agree that this is no set of rules that promoters or DJs have to stick to but the soul scene is about respect, I don't know what you are trying to gain from slagging off re-issues and me, it seems a lot of people are displaying zero respect for me so they can quite frankly do one. It would make most of your happy if I turned round and said 'oh yeah and by they were there were my dad's records' or 'bugger this DJing malarky, if a lot of soulies who are so far up there own butts, I am surprised they can see the PC screen, are gonna slag me off' But, I am not going to give you losers the satisfaction, I have worked hard for the records I own and none of you seem to respect that. I think what this all roughly translates as is the usual chatter and talcum powder wankers who are always ready to criticize and ridicule those who do, when they have done it themselves and just because are hidden behind¯»¿ their shabby and greasy keyboards of PCs they are suddenly big and brave and would be to scared to say it to my face at a soul night. SO GO ON DARE YOU, JUST TRY ME!

hang on to your hat, lad...no one's deriding you for being 14 and putting up a set that lacked this or that or wasnt expensive enough. the fact is somebody ( rugby promoters ) had the forward thinking bravado to give you the opportunity and bearing in mind the majority of praise you've recieved here, you'll get plenty more chances to express yourself...you DONT have to challenge people, ( though sometimes i do think its like banging your head against a brick wall), you've caused a stir and you will be taken notice of, its not just about inducing new blood to the dancefloor but about people like yourself, interpreting how far you've come and how much you've learned and getting behind the decks to entertain folks, especially several hundred, who are hanging on your every introduction, is daunting, full stop. you obviously took it in your stride, but you've got to allow commentary on here, to float over your head, wether good or indifferent..just look forward to your next adventure...you never know...kings - tower - lowton might come calling.

Steady on young lad, don't let them get you worked up, looking forward to see you in the main room if possible.

Cheers Billy
