Drew3 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I recently listened to Derek Pearson's show on the Net and he played a record by The Commands called No Time For You. Absolutely blew me away and I can't stop playing this from Youtube. New group and tunes to me and I've listend to everything else of theirs on Youtube. Wonderful male group harmonies. They didn't make a bad record IMHO. Anyone playing their tunes out? Kind regards. Drew.
sepia Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 listen to the ojays version.that will blow you away. 2
Ged Parker Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Everyone was playing Hey It's Love a while back. I was playing Don't be Affraid To Love Me as my last record for a while. Great group!
Sleeps45 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 great san antonio record..I like the dont be afraid to love me cut 2
boba Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I don't understand why some people like the o'jays version better. It's rarer, and I'm a huge o'jays fan, but the commands record is like perfection and the o'jays record isn't even close. I finally got both commands pic sleeves a couple of years ago. The commands are awesome but they definitely did have some crappy sides. However, they also weren't even the same group at that point because they were GIs stationed in San Antonio and a bunch of them left. I talked to one of the Justifiers on Kim, apparently one of the commands records mostly the justifiers. 3
Drew3 Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 listen to the ojays version.that will blow you away. Just have and not a patch on the Commands IMHO. Kind regards. Drew.
Spook Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 The Commands called No Time For You Everyone was playing Hey It's Love a while back It's the flip of Hey It's Love on both the Dynamic & Backbeat 45 releases and I also prefer the Commands over the O'Jays. David
Constellation161 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Got to agree with SEPIA O'jays everytime for me not that I dislike the Commands version. Mick Perrins
boba Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Got to agree with SEPIA O'jays everytime for me not that I dislike the Commands version. Mick Perrins just wondering -- what do you like about the ojays version better?
boba Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 For me actually what makes the record great it the fey sounding lyrics of the lead and how it goes well with the song. The o'jays version obviously doesn't have that as the lead.
Chalky Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Great double header Looks better with the red vinyl. And as others said O'Jays doesn't come close to the Commands.
boba Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 yeah, the instrumental is low and overorchestrated and sort of boring on the o'jays version. and i like eddie levert a lot but the lead of the commands added something special to the backing track and song. the o'jays version sounds sort of generic to me.
Guest Matt Male Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 The Commands for me too. The O'Jays is too run of the mill, a bit clinical, I like my soul a bit messier and heartfelt.
KevH Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 You're mostly wrong. .O'Jays - pacy and punchier with polished production.Commands, nice but in a quaint way.
Kris Holmes Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 O'Jays for me & I only own the Commands version. I like the O'Jays one because they take it a bit more direct & it's got more punch. Still like The Commands too though.

Still like The Commands too though. You think the O'Jays has more punch? it's much more generic sounding and less in your face IMO. It is more polished as KevH says.
Kris Holmes Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 yeah. but i'm just going off youtube here, since i can't be bothered digging my Commands 45 out. i think the drums on the OJays have more drive at least.
Sleeps45 Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Ive got love for my baby is pretty tight too
boba Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 yeah, only 4 sides out of their 9 are good. I think "I've got love" is just okay, not as good as the OG by the younghearts. However, "a way to love me" is also okay. so maybe like 4.5 sides out of 9.
Guest brummiemick Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Very nice - I also prefer the Commands version. The lead singer for the OJays has to compete too much for me with his backing singers and music.
George G Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Are there other recordings of "No time for you"? I have a demo recording (tape only) by a girl band (self contained on vocals and instruments) from Ohio, it's charming but nothing like these versions. I was wondering if there were more out there.
Constellation161 Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 just wondering -- what do you like about the ojays version better? better production, just my opinion, also the O'JAYS can't do no wrong as far as i'm concerned. good thread though Mick Perrins

NEV Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Is the O'Jays version hard to get? Just curious....Value? Not too hard and not too expensive Kev...but harder than the commands ..hows that for an answer that does'nt quite answer the question Seriously though ....O'jays crops up on ebay from time to time and usually does'nt go past double figures ( dollars) Might be wrong but i seem to think it was also on one of the O'jays Lp's ??
The Tempest Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) It's on this one !! Edited February 12, 2012 by 123-motown 1
Russoul1 Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 i like the ojays version, but i like the commands version too...... FIGHT!!!!! no seroiusly ojays for me, which one was recorded first?
NEV Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 It's on this one !! Ah ,yes I remember selling that last yr ,all of the big 60's tracks on it Hold on ,never forget you ,working on your case etc As lp's go ,this is up there with the best !
Kris Holmes Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 It's on this one !! in that case, I actually do have the O'Jays version then, just not on 45 I might need to actually play my LPs more instead of just buying & filing after one play
boba Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I might need to actually play my LPs more instead of just buying & filing after one play Actually you need to sell all your LPs and reinvest in 45s 1

Harder than Dynamics/Backbeat/Wax Museum?. Also, are these 3 labels in the correct order of release for The Commands?
boba Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 ,Nev where would you place the O'Jays in value terms? Harder than Dynamics/Backbeat/Wax Museum?. Also, are these 3 labels in the correct order of release for The Commands? Yeah those are the correct label orders. Wax Museum is from the early 80s I think. Dynamics was the local label licensed to Backbeat. 1
NEV Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) O'jays is probably rarer than any of the commands version . Think it's one of those records that is'nt really indemand and often slips under the radar on ebay .... by which i mean ,not being chased and bidded up by a large pack of hungry vinyl hounds ,so when it does appear it does'nt hit too high a price It was a while back ,but i seem to recall selling one for about £35 ....don'tthink it was much more ? I found I quite hard to get a copy of the o'jays track, finally got one off Gemm thank to Mouldie, demo in ex cond for £6.00 from a guy in the states, I was looking around for 6 months + . Got the commands as well but I do prefer the o'jays version, that's just me.

NEV Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 If I had a mint copy of the o'jays I think i would try to get closer to 50 pounds Its always baffled me how some records are stubborn to get ,but when you enquire about price ,not expensive ,yet others are common and a lot more expensive ? Yeah ok ,sometimes its a case of the more common being a always indemand dancer ...Ann Sexton -gone too long ,being an example But take the O'jays -i'll never forget you on same label as "no time for you" and it's always over $100 and always plenty of bidders and always on ebay . But not as good as the Metros lp version imho
boba Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Its always baffled me how some records are stubborn to get ,but when you enquire about price ,not expensive ,yet others are common and a lot more expensive ? I've never taken an economics class but I think it's something called "supply and demand." The thing that's annoying to me and that I don't have an explanation for is that I have to look for years for a record, pay like 2x the book price, then a bunch of copies come up and it goes for $10 because you didn't need it anymore.

pikeys dog Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 this is true, i actually kind of hate LPs Send me a list of the LPs you want to get shut of... I love the big ugly things... 1
Tsu Tomatoes Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Ive got love for my baby is pretty tight too ................As is this version 1
Sleeps45 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 ................As is this version the younghearts version was one of the first 45s I ever got and definitley the better version..always nice to give that a spin
boba Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Send me a list of the LPs you want to get shut of... I love the big ugly things... I actually sold off 4/5th of my LP collection a few years ago. Lots of Jazz and Jazz/Funk, etc. got sold off.
Paul Shirley Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 not sure if there is a sound clip of chain gang but its a cracker . i heard it off a cd years ago and so i then i heard their other records. as stated on another post 'done to death' for a good few years and more
Prophonics 2029 Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Always preferred the dynamic press to the back beat. Back beat seems a colder version?.
boba Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Always preferred the dynamic press to the back beat. Back beat seems a colder version?. I always thought they were identical recordings and mixes?
Prophonics 2029 Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Very very similar Boba but the Dynamic seems to glow in the midband.
