NEV Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 (edited) Hi all Was this ever re-issued /booted please ? BROOKS AND JERRY - I GOT WHAT IT TAKES( DIRECTION) Edited February 10, 2012 by NEV
Goldsoul Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I doubt it. Direction had it available until the early 70's. It sold 1,000's in the UK and in some areas played in Youth clubs. Far rarer in the US.

Jez Jones Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Thanks Kev...am i also right in assuming it was only a UK release then ? ...Kev'll know better than me--but wasn't it on a Dynamic or Dynamo--US label
Sean Hampsey Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 (edited) US Dynamo 114 Nev. As Kev says, was on catalogue and available from all decent Record shops until the early-mid 70's on UK Direction (I sold loads of em at the time). One of my early introductions to the music and still one of the greatest shit kickin' rave ups ever on vinyl! Sean Edited February 10, 2012 by Sean Hampsey 2
Pete S Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 The US copy is actually scare, I had a lovely white demo of it and it took ages to sell, but I haven't seen one since.
NEV Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 US Dynamo 114 Nev. As Kev says, was on catalogue and available from all decent Record shops until the early-mid 70's on UK Direction (I sold loads of em at the time). One of my early introductions to the music and still one of the greatest shit kickin' rave ups ever on vinyl! Sean Totally agree Sean I love the way he says part 1 ,part 2 and part three if we have time It would sound great in today's funky soul uprising . And is a good example of how a soul record can be funky yet still remain soulful ,rather than all out funk ,if that makes any sense ?
Bo Diddley Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I think there was a 2nd UK issue. The first has the LARGER arrow on the left. The second has a smaller arrow. Not obvious at first glance. Cheers Kev Bod
TOAD Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 the extended mix is on the brooks odell Kent cd !

Not obvious at first glance. Cheers Kev Bod Hi Kev, You're absolutely right, but it was never off catalogue to my knowledge, so more a second press than a 2nd or later issue. In answer to the original question, it was never booted. Sean
pikeys dog Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 (edited) US copy is extremely hard to find - I've only ever seen my own, and the one Pete listed, which is strange when you consider how common the UK copy is. Never seen a US issue - What a dick - mine is an issue - I must have been thinking of something else on the label... Edited February 13, 2012 by pikeys dog

Mark Bicknell Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I have a Dynamo white demo as scan, as Pete said very hard to find as tuff as Stanley Mitchell I bet in terms of how many copies are out there, had it years. 1

Nice Mark ...but someone got lucky not too long since with this one then https://www.popsike.com/NORTHERNBROOKS-JERRYI-GOT-WHAT-IT-TAKES-PT-1-2/190489347918.html
Mark Bicknell Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Reckon they did really well on the Issue Nev, posted scan so we have all examples on this thread.
Pomonkey Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Have a Dynamo demo tucked away, offers welcome
Bo Diddley Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 First issue then ? Yes, I would say so. The arrow overlaps the centre hole. On the later one's, it doesn't. Cheers KB
NEV Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Reckon they did really well on the Issue Nev, posted scan so we have all examples on this thread. Ok Mark ..this should complete the list then ..uk 2nd issue ( totally different centre )
NEV Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Have a Dynamo demo tucked away, offers welcome hey Michael ..this isnt a place for plugging sales
Pete S Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Have a Dynamo demo tucked away, offers welcome That's the trouble though, nobody realises how rare this is, I started mine off at £40 and eventually took £25 - I don't think anyone would make you an offer, honestly. In the real world, this should be a good £75 I reckon.

Pete ...thats because you have built up a reputation for being a good guy, selling records at value for money prices At £40 people will have thought ..thats a bit steep for Pete Smith
45cellar Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 My copy is the same design as the one that Mark has posted. I bought it from Soul Bowl in the 70s. First Stock Copy that I have ever seen. Popsike.com
Pete S Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I think mine might have been slightly different - no lines - might be wrong
pikeys dog Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I think mine might have been slightly different - no lines - might be wrong Going to have to look for mine now, because i think it doesn't have lines either.
45cellar Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I have seen different Label Variations for other releases. Inez & Charlie Foxx Including a Stock Copy of above but without the White DYNAMO. Just Black & Red Label. This Stock Copy on Vinyl took some finding I guess that there might be a White DEMO for this with Lines etc.
Pete S Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 It's like the top one of Inez & Charlie Foxx, definitely
45cellar Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Fond memories of this, it takes me back whenever I listen to it. The thrill of buying it originally. Magic. This is the DIRECTION copy I bought way back.
Mark Bicknell Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Fantastic this and really what a soul forum should be about......the music, wonderful chaps just wonderful. Mark Bicknell.
NEV Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 As in amazing ,no one said " that's shite " lol
Dave Pinch Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 all the direction copies listed on this thread so far look like later presses to me. on the first issue the arrow is bigger and the label rougher like on all 1968 cbs distributed labels..the ones from 69 onwards have a smoother finish... i bet thats some shite info most of y`all wouldnt have noticed
NEV Posted February 11, 2012 Author Posted February 11, 2012 Good spot and valid . The one I posted is a bit smooth but maybe the one Richard posted looks like the way you described it ?
Sean Hampsey Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 No mistaking this as the very first press of this classic 45! :0) Sean 1
NEV Posted February 11, 2012 Author Posted February 11, 2012 (edited) Ah .. The very nice big "A" in the middle P.s that would be "A" for auction Sean Edited February 11, 2012 by NEV
Seano Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Great record. I picked up a demo on Dynamo in New York for $10 in Academy Records a few years ago. It became my wife's favourite record! 1
dthedrug Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 HI ALL.....What a great label DIRECTION was, BROOKS & JERRY "I GOT WHAT IT TAKES" is the CLASSIC that we all loved when it was played on a SATURDAY NIGHTM But like a few records from this era it was purchased at record shops that were not asked to contribute there sales figures that were used, at the time to make up the top 50, if you read earl BLUES & SOUL MAGS, JA & DG were always slagging of the BBC, RADIO 1, got it the worst! Below are 3 DEMOS that really just reiterate what has been stated, DIRECTION as far as I can tell, from my own records, did not follow the EMI route with records that were never deleted, but re promoted with an updated DEMO, the ISLEY BROS "THIS OLD " & DARRELL BANKS "OPEN THE DOOR" got new DEMOS to cash in on the new rare soul scene, as BROOKS & JERRY were in the same class as the IMPRESSINS "you've been cheatin" as for the label, which is a classic label to collect, with some rare records on it, but for some reason it seems to-days scene just want about 5 of them??? below are the 3 different DEMOS Tommy Hunt is BRILLIANT & NOT EASY?? DAVE 69
Pomonkey Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Seano that was quite poss one of my old copies, my gf at the time was working at Academy so sold tons of 45s there as couldn't be arsed to list them individually online.
pikeys dog Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) My eyes must be painted on.... My U.S. Brooks and Jerry isn't a demo - it's an issue. But it's different to the one above - mine has twin lines going across where the one above has single ones... It's a Styrene copy with the raised X in the run-out. Edited February 13, 2012 by pikeys dog
45cellar Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 That's an unusual press mate. I haven't anything like it on DYNAMO. Trawled the Internet to see if I could find an Example of that design.
pikeys dog Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Here's my U.S. Issue and for completions sake here is my UK (first?) issue
Steve Plumb Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 No mistaking this as the very first press of this classic 45! :0) Sean I have what I believe to be the first issue for auction on the bay (currently at a whopping £2.29) also comes with a Direction sleeve https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300672222323?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_500wt_1156 Cheers Steve
