Love em or hate em they are an important part of our history

"Of course i was there i got a badge" Do you collect them, ?do you have any ?

Do you know someone who collects them ?

I myself had many kept in a drawer , but i gave them all away to my cousin Kim Malloy(ne Preshaw)

i had stopped going to Wigan , and she was just starting

So whats your story ?

again there part of the heritage of the scene, and for me a nice bit! dont have any origianl wigan badge's but have keep my old ones from anniversaries in the 8ts, keele ect, shame nobody doea them nowadays.,

As i said i don't have any , No tell a lie there is still one under the records in one of my boxes it's the black fist "Keep the Faith" one from Wigan !

but there must be a market for them cause Ebay is full of repro's

think one of the nice elements about them is they generally had to be earnt, by literally 'keeping the faith' rather than just bought over the counter, bring back patches! seriously I'm sure you could boost attendances to nighter with these things, there so hard to come by now. some young kid around 19, who'd traveled from cornwall, was fascinated by my addididas holdall and badges at the king's a couple of years back, and I dont even have any good ones on it!

I like 'em! I have a few from over the years but don't have them sewn on anything, my fave is from the last ever Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes back whenever it was - 2007 or something? I think they make a nice souvenir!

Not strictly correct though, since the old issues of Blues & Soul mag had page adverts with loads of badges. You could, if you were so minded walk up and down the West End plastered in the damn things without ever having set foot in a Niter....

Never was into em myself.

A lad i Know flogged a badge at Lowton a few years back, the original Wigan one with Sept 23rd on (if memory serves), got £100 smackers for it which surprised me.

I've still got that poster from Wigan though, would never part with that piece of memorabilia (even if, design wise, it's awful).

Aid.

Badges are still a big part of the scene though , just like drug dealers are

you don't have to like them, but they're still part of it !

I did say generally Steve, I know you could buy gerneric badges for the NS scene, like soul- lancashire or soul- on trent ect, but could you purchase actual anni badges over the counter?

tis but relish on the burger, not the meat itself, it has to be said!

funny old world........remember back in the day being given badges at various venues and throwing them away.......however have got an original TORCH badge and a red wigan badge stuck on a record box lid and for some strange reason kept an original yellow Wigan anniversary........which l sold on E-BAY for just shy of £300........result :D

The earliest venue, for badges, I went to was Wigan Casino from 1975 onwards, first night, I went with a couple of friends, one of whom', wore a bowling shirt with badges on.One badge he had sewn on was, an egg shaped easter all dayer badge? Since then, all my badges I have collected, ie original casino, ritz, and any other venues I went to. I still have them, no cotton or glue, anywhere near, all still in pristine condition.

i'd like to see one of these. were they given out at the Nighters? I've never ever set eyes on one, apart from the 70's repro ones

Anyone?

funny thing is you had to buy em!!.........as far as l can tell they look the same or very similar

Most of the ones I got from nighters I threw in a drawer somewhere, might have to try and find them and bang em in eBay. Struggle to see why some people buy them for nighters they didn't attend though, seems a bit like buying a bit of history they weren't part of.

Of course it's not, that just silly IMO

The reason people have or had badges that were given out at nighters was as a mark of their attendance, a memoir. Or at least that's how it used to be, nowadays with the masses returning (those who were there in the first place) I'm guessing it might be different... Perhaps wanting to show how much of a soulie they are.

Regardless, of very little interest to me. Unless someone wants to buy a .... Ahem...'rare' Ripley Soul Night badge.

I've just thought of this, in about 1977/1978, I went for a job in a local record wholesalers, Barathea blazer, black trousers, and sporting a va vas badge, on the breast pocket( I could have been an impression-you've been cheatin, because, unfortunately, I never went to the va vas, too young), but I got the job, did the badge help, who knows?.

Got a "heart of soul" badge given when i first went to Wigan, wore it for a couple of weeks and then realised, badges were bad news, you might as well stick a big light up sign on your head for the squad if stopped en route. With my history of acute paranoia it was a no brainer.

I got a first aniversary Wigan ( candle on it?) , seem to think they were free but i was too smashed ( as if there was such a thing) and lost it or gave it away before i got home. An expensive block up by the looks of E-bay now. c'est la vie .

I cannot understand people buying badges off e bay and pretending they went to wigan or where ever, thats pathetic ,

perhaps buying for collecting is ok maybe? A bit like collecting medals or plates etc i suppose .

My badges, memberships and records are my memories and could never sell them . but thats me .

Badges are a form of memoriabilia. Some of us folks like that kind of stuff

Would never wear a badge to pretend I went somewhere, bit silly to do that me thinks!

BUT...

To have a little part of the history of the Northern Soul scene..... now that does appeal to me.

A proper and objective view of of what soul badges/patches are about.

Only got two of any real note and those are an origanal Torch badge and original Leeds Central badge both bought around 72'. These badges i had on blazer and Braided jackets at the time but always wore them with pride as they were the clubs i regularly attended and loved.

Never bothered with any of the "keep the faith and international soul club and Casino badges as every man and his dog seemed to have them which for me cheapened the club they were associated with.

Whats the value of these today?-not that i want to part with them :g::no:

i collect em,i always was facinated with the colours, slogans and designs, ive got 2 bags covered in them ,mainley my duplicates, but dont parade anniversary badges of venues that i never attended,i only take my bag with badges on too allnighters never to a soul night, for that ive a plain bag.i have had a guy come up to me and ask did i want to buy his "niter bag" covered in new repro badges and he tried his best to convince me that they were 70s originals.whats the difference??-well if its the black fist badges theres something about the thread used on the fist and lettering, plus the shape of the clenched fist itself.again the "club" badges its down to material used in the 70s and embroidery techniques and colours.theres some 70s badges which are still rare to find(clenched fist type) right on,soul stafford, soul the potteries, soul blackpool, soul leeds, soul london, keep on keeping on,soul birmingham, soul wolverhampton

Exactly! - Memories, to me the badges and memberships I've kept are souvenirs that act as reminders to where I've been over the years, I will hopefully look through them when in the old people's home.

I think in the 'old days' (70's) it was kind of fashionable to wear patches etc, pretty sure I remember people wearing patches on the knees of jeans (Not soul people, 'normal people!') :D - I suppose I was at that hieght at the time!

All the best,

Len.
