I've been meaning to do this one for ages. Unlike the critics who almost universally despise the early Bowie stuff (probably because they're too f*cking lazy to listen to it properly), I absolutely love it, especially the brilliant Parlophone and Pye singles. This podcast features the best of everything pre-The Man Who Sold The World. As a bonus, I included Bowie's brilliant demo of All The Young Dudes over the Mott The Hoople backing track. Happy days!

n.b. tracks marked as unissued were unissued at the time - two eventually appeared in 1970 and the version of London Bye Ta ta here was only released for the first time in 2010 though had bee widely bootlegged.

I deliberately left off Space Oddity as it wa such a big hit.

DAVID BOWIE - DO ANYTHING YOU SAY - PYE 1966

DAVID BOWIE & THE LOWER THIRD - CAN'T HELP THINKING ABOUT ME - PYE 1966

DAVY JONES - YOU'VE GOT A HABIT OF LEAVING - PARLOPHONE 1965

DAVID BOWIE - LOVE YOU TIL TUESDAY - DERAM 1967

DAVIE JONES WITH THE KING BEES - LOUIE LOUIE GO HOME - VOCALION POP 1964

DAVIE JONES WITH THE KING BEES - LIZA JANE - VOCALION POP 1964

DAVID BOWIE - RUBBER BAND - DERAM 1966

DAVID BOWIE - I DIG EVERYTHING - PYE 1966

THE MANISH BOYS - I PITY THE FOOL - PARLOPHONE 1965

DAVID BOWIE - I'M NOT LOSING SLEEP - PYE 1966

THE MANISH BOYS - TAKE MY TIP - PARLOPHONE 1965

DAVID BOWIE - GOOD MORNING GIRL - PYE 1966

DAVID BOWIE - AND I SAY TO MYSELF - PYE 1966

DAVID BOWIE - THE LONDON BOYS - DERAM 1966

DAVID BOWIE - KARMA MAN - DERAM 1967

DAVID BOWIE - SILLY BOY BLUE - DERAM 1967

DAVID BOWIE - WHEN I'M FIVE - UNISSUED 1968

DAVID BOWIE - MAID OF BOND STREET - DERAM 1967

DAVID BOWIE - LET ME SLEEP BESIDE YOU - UNISSUED 1968

DAVID BOWIE - SELL ME A COAT - DERAM 1967

DAVID BOWIE - WHEN I LIVE MY DREAM - BBC SESSION 1968

DAVID BOWIE - REGAZZO SOLO, REGAZZA SOLA - ITALY PHILIPS 1969

DAVID BOWIE - IN THE HEAT OF THE MORNING - UNISSUED 1968

DAVID BOWIE - LONDON BYE TA TA - UNISSUED 1968

DAVID BOWIE - CONVERSATION PIECE - MERCURY 1970

DAVID BOWIE - MEMORY OF A FREE FESTIVAL - MERCURY 1970

DAVID BOWIE - THE PRETTIEST STAR - MERCURY 1970

DAVID BOWIE - ALL THE YOUNG DUDES - GUIDE VOCAL FOR MOTT THE HOOPLE 1972

Wot no Laughing Gnome? Seriously though, there's loads on there I've not heard before so I'll look forward to listening to this when I've had me dinner. I always liked Pin Ups which as you know is his look back to the Marquee etc.

Thanks for posting

Had to chuckle there Mike, Pin-Ups is the only Bowie album up to 1980 which I didn't put on iTunes cos I hate it so much  See Emily Play, Sorrow, Where Have All The Good Times Gone would have made a great EP, the rest is terrible...well not terrible, just dull.

You don't like Shapes of Things and Here Comes The Night? I know what you mean though, it's not to all Bowie fans tastes - could be a bit of a muso's album? ( I make no apologies for being a muso however ). Anyways, finished me dinner and had a listen to the Podcast and as you say those Pye and Parlophone singles are superb especially Do Anything You Say which I've never heard before.

I Dig Everything is surely Tony Hatch's finest moment. Either that or Theme from The Champions, which is also super.

"I've got more friends than I"ve had hot dinners,

Some of them are losers, but the rest of them are winners"

definitely the worst of the Pye recordings, other side should have been the A side, it's fantastic

No Shapes Of Things is alright but he really, really overdoes the Cockney accent on that one

Not like us to disagree

I wasn't talking about the words - I think Bowie wrote them didn't he?...

The backing track is ace though - it's like the epitome of groovy sixtiness, especially the liitle organ riff.

He did write them but it's just so trite that I can't listen to it without cringing. Lyrics and music! Actually Good Morning Girl is as bad with that awful attempt at scat jazz singing. But the other 4 Pye tracks are great.

Maybe we should get Lee Jeffries to put another vocal over it then, like he did with Exus Trek.

Actually, maybe not!

What do you think of Bowie's appearance on Soul Train - i mean the interview bit rather than the performance? I only raise it because of Don Cornelius's recent death. Some kid asks him when he first got into soul music and he replies something about when he was taking poppers on street corners - poppers indeed!

He's really drunk on Soul Train!
