I am not convinced it is a second issue the gold one. I think the group or label did it as some form of sales gimmick. But I am not 100% certain.

Both label designs were issued in gold vinyl Steve.

I've never seen the label design that Joe posted (the one without the Gold logo). Isn't there another record on this label that also has that Gold logo? I'd imagine it would be totally legit and original. These two label variations were probably pressed at the same time anyways, like stock of one ran out and they repressed it. I wouldn't call one a first issue and one a second issue ... tons of soul 45s were repressed due to demand where it's impossible to figure out which one was first and why the text is slightly different on one vs. another, etc. Either way, they're both of almost the same time (I assume).

So my copy of the so called "2nd issue" came from Soul Bowl circa 1982 as I recall.

If they repressed it for the northern market I doubt that they would have used the yellow vinyl.

Yes I agree with you Bob. That's my view on this and I think it's a bit of a misnomer to talk about 1st and 2nd issues.

It's a record that I brought as a largely unknown 45, at the time a few of the DJs were getting behind it, but certainly no real demand.

both are originals, however john manship told me that the one without the gold logo was the first press, i've had both label designs and they both suffer from poor sound quality, probably due to the poor quality gold vinyl that they are pressed on

I thought the price of the one on ebay was very high this time -- recently it had been going for closer to $100 on ebay, not that high. Either way the no-logo copy is clearly rarer (whether it was first or second), there are many copies of the record in popsike but only two without the logo. At some point discussing which is first becomes an academic exercise and you have to make a collector-oriented choice, whether you are going to go for aesthetics (e.g. a nicer looking label) or rarity. A similar case is the new yorkers on Tac-Ful. I guess if you're rich you can always get both.

hi,

thanks for reply's,

john manship said mine was the first when i asked him a few years back when i was thinking of selling,

so i just assumed it was first, i thought it went for a good price last night, bet i wouldn't get anywhere near that if i put mine on ebay,

mind you mine's not quite mint as some idiot decided to scratch his initials in the runin and a bit of the start,

i had a copy of sy hightower on carmen and thought it was a second issue because if had a plain lable, and later found out it was the original (don't quote me but i'm thinking back and i think john manship told me he found out from the guy who made the records and or owned the lable,

think he said only 50 of each, all made in la but all found in florida for some reason }

best,

joe.

Yeah, the carmelita on carmen comes on the rarer plain yellow label also. Obviously if a label owner with a good memory says something is first, it probably is first. Usually there's no way to prove either way though.

Mine is the Gold label,i can`t read the year on that scan but mine is `79`and 78`with One in a million has the A-side. So it could have a later pressing by one year maybe?? :g:

Hi Wayne,

Yes - both are B sides and yellow vinyl sharing the same GR - 02 number ? I am in agreement that the "Gold Records" copy writes the earlier dated 1978 Marsaint Music/Underdog production as the earlier release !!!! And the later release Gold records outputed clearly states 1979, which is insupport of the above post.

Just off topic and it's comforting to read that Joe's copy is not mint ..............recall many copies of the Gold Records 45 with the record address etched/scratched out as the first and only original back in 1979 and throughout 1980 ! . Quote - etched out by the label owners as a misprint/incorrect address or p.o box. .
