Guest Preems Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Starting this topic because at our party out here in California we play a real mix of things from the 50's thru the 70's including the rare and the not so much as well as soul, funk, rockabilly, doowop, girl groups, etc etc. I know that many DooWop tunes have made it on to the floors around the world of soul dancing and I'm mostly wondering if the community here has any recommendations. and of course I'm aware some aren't big fans of this sound so feel free to slagg as well ! Heres a few tunes I like that have a bit of an earlier sound Arabia- The Delcos - sadly the orig version on ebony isn't on the tube https://youtu.be/_xKK3atvfoU Chandeliers - Heartbreaker - a bit slower, still need to find one! https://youtu.be/UPXN8eN__iI The Profiles- Take a giant Step https://youtu.be/U-fUiP1RGyQ and lastly here's a purely doowop track that's just so soulful and uplifting https://youtu.be/hq0R0Dgfsxk of course nearly anything on the Lummtone label seems to fit the bill as well thanks very much in advance!!

Philt Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Always loved group sounds and definitely partial to a bit of doo-wop too. These probably have a foot in both camps although more on the soul side in the main, definitely doff their caps to what went before though. So, off the top of my head (some on the 'rare' side and some not): Empires - you're on top girl (Candi) Untouchables - raisin' sugar cane (Madison) Royal Robins - something about you sends me (TruGloTown) Dem III - I got a woman (Jam-Cha) Marlboros - so much a man can take (Justice LP I think, Carolinas?) Five Du-Tones - sweet lips (One-Derful) Chances - stranger I love you (Finch) Fiats - speak words of love (Universal) Can't do clips mate, sorry; you'll find the vast majority somewhere on the www I'm sure From memory, Anglo American did a CD along the lines of Doo-Wop meets soul I'm pretty sure and that'd be worth a butcher's ... Cheers Phil
Guest Preems Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 That really excellent Bob. I love your show and need to hear more of the archives, it's always a pleasure. Thanks for taking some time out, I was just listening to that Carl Lester today, it's would definitely get some of these kids w fake ID's out on the floor!

I think the Carl Lester is becoming popular now, it was just a random record before but I'm starting to see it on people's lists, priced a little higher, etc. FYI that's the first rivingtons record.

Cheers Phil I've heard the Empires, Five Chances, Royal Robins, and Dem III. Some very fine jewels there.. Can't say I haven't been looking for them Five Chances is one I play (off youtube) over and over again, and would definitely be happy to own but for now it seems a very distant grail. Gonna take a look through the tube for the others, thanks very much.

boba Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I've heard the Empires, Five Chances, Royal Robins, and Dem III. Some very fine jewels there.. Can't say I haven't been looking for them obviously the first 3 are very hard and expensive. the dem iii is hard but not as expensive, have seen a few copies for sale over the last 4-5 years. It's so lo-fi it's hard to listen to though (both sides). I managed to get that west coast distributors 45 too (which doesn't even sound like soul to me) but have never seen the tandells on Jam-Cha.
boba Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 definitely noticed the record because someone else posted a want, so there you have it... must have come right before the one on Baton Master I'm guessing no, the baton master record is much later in the decade. it came right before the liberty records (which hit with "papa oom mow mow" and "the bird's the word")

I know there's one on Jam Cha that i really like, maybe it is the Tandells after all. The Dem III I heard on Rockin Jim and Daily City Bob's CD after we Dj'ed at KPOO
boba Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I know there's one on Jam Cha that i really like, maybe it is the Tandells after all. The Dem III I heard on Rockin Jim and Daily City Bob's CD after we Dj'ed at KPOO the Tandells is a girl group. The Dem III has a really slow side "lonely guy" and an uptempo side "i got a woman". I like both sides but the "I got a woman" side is very messy. Supposedly Dem III are the same group as the Magicians, but I'm not sure.
Suzannek Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Yep I love doowop/early soul harmony. Two of my favourites are: The first one I have, the last one I don't https://youtu.be/RP5q2RiCeZw The Chimes - Chop Chop Hollywood Saxons - Loving You Suz x

Windlesoul Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 (edited) I just love collecting doowop influenced soul / early soul and early group R&B, provides a whole other universe (at least for soulie ears) to go down in seeking tunes, just like those with the latin bug etc (another genre I love). Far too many good doowoppy things to mention but a quick couple of faves that come to mind (sorry at work, network doesnt let me put up youtube clips): Carl (Spencer!) and the Spindletoppers - It's written your face -(ABC) Jarmels - Keep your mind on me - Laurie (discussed this on a recent thread) Edited January 27, 2012 by mark w.

boba Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 This is one of my favorite transitional records, which also happens to be Chicago. not northern though: There are two versions of this released, the later vee jay version has a delay added so the end of every sentence echoes.

boba Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 always liked this one A little off topic, but I was looking at some labels recently and noticed that this arctic label (which is unrelated to the philly label) is the same new york label that derek martin on arctic is on and is the same label as the executive four on lu-bet
Guest Preems Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Gonna start listening myself Boba wasnt aware of this for some reason Can't say enough about Bob's show, I just listened to half of one and added two cheapies to the wantlist. Beautiful stuff!

Robbk Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 1959-1964 were great years for transition from R&B to Soul. I like THOUSANDS of songs from those years (Much much much more than cuts from 1965-1969-and I only like, perhaps a handful of cuts from 1970-72, and maybe only one made after that ("Right Back Where I Started From"). There are way, way , way too many to start listing them (virtually everything released by VJ, Chess, Motown, Anna/Checkmate, virtually all the Popcorn and Beach cuts from that period, all the Brill Building written cuts from then, etc. The Volumes, Dukays, Five Quails, Royal Ravens, Serenaders, Poets, Caravelles (Harry Gates), Dynamics, Sheppards, Victorials, Barbara Green, Barbara Lewis, Jive Five, Marcels, Four Buddies (Van McCoy group), Chaunteurs/Presidents, Billy Butler & 4 Enchanters, etc. come to mind. 2

Jaco Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Haven't checked back through all of the tracks listed but a few I would consider that fit into this category would include: Little D and the Harlems - "Who's gonna pick up the pieces" Rickie and the Hallmarks - "Joanie, don't you cry" Revlons - "Dry your eyes"

I saw it on the original pre-josie label recently, I don't know if I've even seen that before. I don't know the other two tracks, will check them out. Thanks.

That Rickie and the Hallmarks is fabulous https://youtu.be/fzb3cUgbskw reminds me of some of the later Italian doo-wop stuff. one we play a lot in that vein is Stormy Weather by The Four Casts (ha) https://youtu.be/b8Mu3ZS_ZI4 thanks very much, that's a great post
