My good lady is anxious to purchase the uk price guide for my xmas pressy. Rather too anxious if you ask me seeing as she`s never taken much interest in numbers before. Time for a stock check methinks.

Anyroad, who`s got one, is it worth the dosh, and have any omissions been found ?

Cheers tt

Best bet is just go BUY it and work it out on Boxing Day having a read  ....

Not seen too many comments on here regards JM's British Book so might not get any responses  ....

Mind you... they are only "guides" ....

It's the best book I've ever bought, great "throne" reading. Not ony listing zils of info, there's stories, humour & label scans to die for.. for me I've never seen a soul guide to get anywhere near it. It's a fabulous work..Ommisions?? I've not seen any but I didn't buy the guide to pick fault with it, I bought it to learn..and it certainly has tons of info, facts and figures i never knew before. Well done Johnny My Boy

It is an excellent read. There are only a couple of minor omissions - which I was going to email JM on - mainly around odd labels like Beacon, but nothing that would be of real concern to readers. It has also caused me to somewhet "re-appraise" the value of my own English collection.

Thank you, I`ll send for it then.

Not too bothered about prices as I don`t deal much, just want it to play with really. The last UK Soul listing I saw was the Selectadisk one from years ago, anyone remember it ? So I was working on my own online version when Manships came out. All that work for nothing, but I`m sure the book will be better than what I would have produced in about 10 years time

I did one in about 1994 - listed around ten times the amount of stuff that was in Findagroove - I bet there's loads in there John won't have listed, seriously.

You`ve just jogged my memory Pete. Did your list have lots of non Northern records in & some of the labels slightly out of alphabetical order ? If so I`ve got that one somewhere. Yes the Selectadisk one was very light.

Think it might be you `cause it stops December `69

No mate it's only got northern in, I left practically all of the general soul records out...but I think I did 70's as well, probably not reissues but things like GSF etc.

Hate to disappoint you again, but I've seen your draft UK guide (courtesy KR) and I have find a groove book.Obviously you've not seen the book yet. If you put those two books together maybe you'd have a 1/10th of JM guide.

Pete S. Maybe you should just do a leaflet of the ones you've heard of that Manship missed. As I said before I don't buy books to pick fault with them. I've been collecting British since 1966 and I've learnt more sitting on my loo the last month, than i ever thought possibl;e. Get a copy before you make bet.. i would suggest you would lose.

You're getting boring Soulfood. Do you think John Manship knows more about British than Mick Smith or Roy Gelder... these guys have stuff John has never heard of.

In my experience so have a lot of people, but only the proud owners would call them Northern

Wonder if any of my erm, cough, discoveries are in the book, LOL

Tom.

I would suggest if you didn't spend time making silly comments on talk rooms, you could've wrote the British guide before Manship. I just took exception to you slagging of a book you haven't seen.. puzzling really. Anyhow I'll leave you alone until your next ludicrous comment..

I suggest you learn to read properly and show me exactly where I've been 'slagging off' the book. Also, it's 'written' not 'wrote', which would explain why you didn't write a book. Or did you?????

My point was if you haven't seen the book how can you write "I Bet my effort had loads of stuff JM missed" crazy statement in any language but my hats off to you, you are the King of the crazy statement. PS thanks for the compliment..

But I was not slagging off the book so why make out that I did, because that then gets passed on and eventually I get a call saying - why have you slagged off my book! If it's got everything that I listed then thats fantastic research.
