boba Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) I have been told two different things about Linda Griner on motown, coming from many different people. There is a pressing of the 45 that says "goodbye cruel world" instead of "goodbye cruel love". I've been told by some people that it was just on the label and that it was an identical recording and told by other people that it's a rare alternate recording where she actually says "goodbye cruel world". Both sets of people were usually totally sure and some people claimed to have heard the alternate recording. Right now on ebay a Belgian seller has a WLP of the "world" title with audio. I listened to the audio and it was identical to the "cruel love" track. So does this settle my question or are there actually some pressings that play a totally different version of the track? Thanks in advance. Edited June 20, 2013 by 45cellar Artist Tag
Dave Rimmer Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 As far as I'm aware it's just the labels that are different.
boba Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 thanks a lot. next time someone tells me they've heard it I'm calling them out.
Soulman Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Hi Bob, If I can find the interview I did with Linda for Manifesto magazine I'll post it up. I asked about the two variants and she confirmed that it was merely a mistake on the labelling rather than there being two recordings. I have a studio take which is simply an alternative take rather than alternative lyrics and still uses "Goodbye cruel love" throughout. Hope that helps Best Steve
boba Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 thanks steve for the additional confirmation, i appreciate it
Guest in town Mikey Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Is Fudge on here. I know he collects music sheets of the songs. I'd bet a pound to a pound, that he would have a copy of this one? if not, maybe a search on Gemm, ebay etc could turn up one for sale that would answer your question?
Paul McKay Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 My demo copy label states "Goodby cruel world" but it's the normal take.
Spook Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 My 'map' WLP with "Cruel Love", and its the same cut as usual. Best David
Rich Buckley Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I've got this on Candian Tamla. They're all the same cut. Also got a copy of the licensing agreement to Canada or the performer's agreement with Motown (can't recall which from memory). Will dig out and post some scans later... Rich
Mal C Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I did all this comparison lark when I bought mine, both cuts are the 100% same....as Dave says just the two labels are different. Mal.C.
Rich Buckley Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Here you go...a royalty rate of 2 cents per side, bargain.... Rich
Guest allnightandy Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Due to it's rareity they must have netted about $4
Prophonics 2029 Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) That's funny, my copy has many grooves in the run out, I know its only one but it turns on its self 5 times, so its a Motown map and not from the same stamper? Its just under the label but its a Nashville satmp. Edited January 19, 2012 by Prophonics 2029
