Steve G Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Well spotted Miff. I rest my case. If you're lucky the buyer might find "Ring my bell" in there too!
Guest allnightandy Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Well he must have sold his records at some point......cos he ain't got 'em anymore. : The mystery that was Wigan Casino eh. Never seen a picture of the Central Station before today either.....I always wondered why Station Road didn't have a station Now i thought the station was on station road right down the other end , Just across from the side street where russ's record shop was

Wally Francis Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I know the guy selling these tunes, (He has asked that i keep it to myself) he has guest dj'd for me in the past at various venues that i promoted and co-promoted in Middlesbrough and Newcastle. When i got told that he was selling up i tried to get to see them but he would'nt let me, as i was wanting to obviously just cherrypick my way through them but he wants them to go as a job lot, (and he considers me a friend as well) I know that he's kept approx 150 back as his personal favs if he ever wants to play them out again, (mainly classics) I do know that the guy used to regularly get the soulpacks from soulbowl every couple of weeks in the early 80's and to my knowledge i've never seen or heard of him selling any before.
Steve G Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Now i thought the station was on station road right down the other end , Just across from the side street where russ's record shop was Nope right opposite the Casino where the car park was apparantly. Demolished in 1973.
Guest allnightandy Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) Nope right opposite the Casino where the car park was apparantly. Demolished in 1973. right ! but we used to jump the train to wigan ! i remember the car park and the cinema but nothing that resembled a railway line ? i've just googled it , it was on the A49 Riverway which is the next road down it's now a duel carrageway but the carpark could have been a goods yard ? Wiggyflat Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Kevin Johansen originally from 14 Chertsey Avenue Pallister Park Mbro then 21 Oaklea Close Norton then Hillside Rd Norton....used to buy records from Fearnleys in Mbro and Pat Brady at Darlington Dolphin Centre...deejayed at Wallys doo at xmas.
Alison H Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I thought it may be Hoss, selling Mace's records for him, but then I read this statement I have Dj`d all over the country with these records and they have packed many a dancefloor in that time. So can't be Mace, that's naughty, but brilliant
John Parker Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 In the words of Hughie Green..... Should I take the money or open the box.. :)

I was there - good spot. We exchanged messages about your Middlesbrough days when you use to contribute to Ian Levines's ANS site. Often walk up Hillside with the dog - I live over at Crooksbarn. Just think when you were at Chertsey Avenue your were about half a mile (Brambles Farm) from one of the most respected collectors and collections in 70's - Bob Slater -you never know what is lurking! Excuse my irritation with this thread - but I don't understand why it is causing so much interest - a bloke has put an item up for sale on ebay and described it accurately and honestly as far as I can see - he ain't promising mega rarities - to quote him ...'there is a mixture of original vinyl, pressings, re-pressings, re-issues etc and even describes the 'bonus' as '..... might be a load of junk...'. You pays your money and you takes your choice).... let him get on with it. Mike 3
Guest jerrio Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 i have no idea if it was true it was just amusing at the time and the line "He's been offered £7,500 for the box reminded me of it It was covered in Black Echoes at the time if Iremember right.

boba Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Just looking around ebay and came a cross this lot https://www.ebay.co.u...000213369653761 what does this mean "There is also a number of double AA side lables so there is potentially 700+ records in this box"?
Guest giant Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 In the words of Hughie Green..... Should I take the money or open the box.. :)
Guest Matt Male Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 what does this mean "There is also a number of double AA side lables so there is potentially 700+ records in this box"? I think he means the flipside also gets plays out, double siders as opposed to literally two A sides. Shouldn't increase the price though.
boba Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I think he means the flipside also gets plays out, double siders as opposed to literally two A sides. Shouldn't increase the price though. it was weirder, apparently a record with two different songs increases the number of total records. Also, he said there were 600 records, but the 2-sided records add another 100? So 500 of the records have the same song on both side? I'm confused reading his ad.

I agree it's confusing but I think it means there are 600 records, 100 of which have 'good' (different) tracks on both sides (being reissues) making 700 different 'good' tracks in the box. Alan
TOAD Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 And theres some SKA 45s in there but what ones ? Or are they two-tone ?
Dave Rimmer Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Sorry this is off topic, but quite interesting for both trainspotters and Casino goers This is why it was called Station Road.....scroll down.... https://www.lankybeat.com/Venues.html Just spent twenty minutes reading that page Steve, great stuff. Frightening to think how many of those clubs I visited during the Seventies, especially as Leigh Casino came upo in another thread last weekend. The one I hadn't thougt of in years though was The Navada in Bolton, never could rollerskate properly, but there always seemd to be fit birds in there 1
Steve G Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Cheers Dave, might be an idea if Mike could transfer this bit out of the mysterious Teeside DJ sells up thread to a separate thread of it's own under All our yesterdays...Would do it but don't know how. But agreed, although not really a soul article, those clubs were interesting to read about. As was the bombshell of the old station opposite the Casino.....Would have been bloody handy for avoiding the 'townies' on the walk up the hill on a Saturday night. 1

Guest allnightandy Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) what does this mean "There is also a number of double AA side lables so there is potentially 700+ records in this box"? These crappy boots or pressing that have totally different labels and artists on each side or the genuine ones like the ABC double siders but with different artists ! Naughty Boy Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 thirty years and 600 non origanals im impressed (not) No doubt there is a good few like that out there
Daz Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Ive been trying to view these records for over a week now as i seen them the day they were listed. For some reason the seller cannot arrange a time for me to view ??? I am only 15 miles away too - my advice do not bid. Alternatively bid then view then decide whether to pay or not.
Guest allnightandy Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 IMHO i think it's a box of crap ! if he was a dj he would know his collections value , as for turn up anywhere and dj well yes you could if you were already a working dj and you bought them but why would you ? i have been to many "Do's" over the last few years and with the obvious exception of soul gigs where such behaviour would result in a lynching most dj's seem to have everything on a computer i spoke to one who had 40,000 tunes on his hard drive i think this lot might well have many northern tunes in it but i feel it's aimed at a dj who gigs where the people neither know nor care what is on the deck just what is emitted from the speakers !
Guest allnightandy Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 £200 for a box of 50 pressings anyone ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NORTHERN-SOUL-COLLECTION-/260935970597?pt=UK_Records&hash=item3cc0feef25
Sheldonsoul Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Hey I know this has gone off topic but shows how interesting a box of crap records is. Bob the answer to that one is that 90% of members on here are with ovo, nighter scene and discerning soulie brigade. (imho that is)...John. Box of crap records!,some nutters prepared to pay 2 grand plus without even seeing them
Steve G Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 If there was anything decent in there surely the seller would have named a few as 'teasers' to attract bids.
Guest allnightandy Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) £200 for a box of 50 pressings anyone ? https://www.ebay.co.u...=item3cc0feef25 Now at £337 ! at least this guy lists the crap contained £6.74p a pressing Edited January 22, 2012 by allnightandy
Chalky Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Bob's question now has a topic of it's own as it is more relevant IMO to discuss his question in its own right, the topic can be found here...
Guest allnightandy Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) A whole page has gone missing ? right i can see where it's gone now ! Edited January 22, 2012 by allnightandy
Russoul1 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 imo i think this thread should keep running as there have been some very interesting points. questions being made yes it has gone from a inital thread to another topic discussion but i feel both do go hand in hand? also i think winnies post of trying to explain the scene, ie two layers is correct and well put, but what as become very noticable is the lack of postings from the the first layer soulies, djs, promoters......most probably to busy bidding on these collections...... ps, just noticed thresd been split lol
Guest rennie Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 If it's a Midland Playbox...its 2 grand over priced

boba Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Not northern not particularly rare but not crap some nice stuff in there . I agree, it's not a box of bootlegs, it's a decent collection of mainstream soul music, an instant collection for someone. I remember when I was just starting on ebay, I would go nuts over lots with some cool local records in them (not exactly like this one) and would always get into a bidding war. That's what happened here, if you look at the bid history there was a bidding war knocking the price up from $150. 1
Guest allnightandy Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Not northern not particularly rare but not crap some nice stuff in there . just look at the condition !
Philippe Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 just look at the condition ! The seller is American and his grading system is not the same than an Englishman. His highest grade is VG++ and he has a flawleess feedback, personnally I would buy from him with complete confidence.
Guest jerrio Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 The seller is American and his grading system is not the same than an Englishman. Agree, Not everyone grades their records the same unfortunatly, one mans/womens vg+ is anothers mint - I buy most weeks from a seller who under grades in the buyers favour. On the other hand ive been stung on occcasion, ive recieved a record or two in shocking condition,I wouldnt have had the neck to have even put them up for sale in the first place. Feedback is very important to me.
Soul16 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) £7,500! I assume the winning bidder knew exactly what he was doing and wasn't buying blind. Edited January 24, 2012 by Soul16
