The very first outings of so many great tunes get obscured over time and we lose track of who first played what and where...and credit inevitably goes to the DJ who is most associated with a certain tune, but rarely to the DJ that first risked emptying the dance floor with something new and different.

So....... here's a few tunes that are big departures from the standard 4 to the floor, that found later appreciation, but were probably played to empty floors back in the day...

Nite-Liters - K-Gee

Skull Snaps - My Hang Up Is You

Montclairs - Hung Up On Your Love

RPM Generation - Rona's Theme

Boogie Man Orchestra - Lady, Lady, Lady

Del-Rays Inc. - Destination Unknown

Frankie Crocker - Ton Of Dynamite

Prince George - Wrong Crowd

Raw Soul - The Gig

Shout up if you know the who's, when's, where's.... and sometimes the why's....

It'll be interesting (for me anyway) to see who the brave and maverick DJs of the day were :hatsoff2:

Don't want to limit the thread to the left field tunes, but thought they might be a good start...... :)

Someone told me that the Nite Liters was originally played at the Torch.... anyone know who the DJ was ? :g:

..didn't take much notice at the time--but think Mr Levine gave this a whirl down there..

Skullsnaps got a simultaneous UK release so the rare factor was gone from the start, I'm Your Pimp took away some of the shine, so it only gathered status in the last 20?years

"My Hang Up Is You" played by me and Phil at local do's as a new release in 73.

Our local record shop owner Pauline Marshall, recommended to us.

The record went big at Wigan some 9 months later!!

"I'm Your Pimp" played at The Mecca off the LP early 75.

P.S. I sold a few copies of Hang Up at Wigan, because Pauline still had it in stock.

Most of these where played at the Mecca, but the dancefloors wheren't empty.

The Mecca crowd by and large didn't mind change.

Poke definitely a Cleethorpes maverick. Always willing to take a punt and persevere with a track he believed in and not just playing the safe option. I believe he was once near threatened with the sack by Mary Chapman for playing "funky shit". Black Nasty "Cut Your Motor Off" comes to mind. Memories shite nowadays but I'm sure some of the stuff such as Raw Soul, Prince George (possibly) were pretty much simultaneous Mecca/Cleethorpes being Anderson supplied to those with an ear and the belief in playing 'em.
