Begining Of A Nighter

Recommended Posts

There has been many threads on records to end a nighter with. I allways remember getting into some of the historic venues and watching people arriving walking across dancefloors, meeting up with there mates, shaking hands and testing out the dancefloor. Was just wondering what would be your memories or ideas of the perfect record to start the ball rolling and get the atmosphere going at a nighter. Was playing some records today and played THE BROTHERS-ARE YOU READY FOR THIS and seem to remember somewhere starting the proceedings going with that one. Whats your thoughts

I know it's old, a bit of a cliche, but it's still one of my favourite records, but it's perfect as a 1st record I think,

The MVPs "Turning My Heartbeat Up" - soft and gentle beginning... getting faster, and louder, perfect!!

Can just see the shaking of hands, couple of tentative steps on the dancefloor to those opening few bars, then getting into it as your confidence in the dancefloor grows and the tempo rises....

Oh yes.....

It was written as a tune for an american football team to enter onto the pitch to, to end up in a cheerleading/crowd frenzy, so surely that's the exact sort of thing (kind of....)

:)

Actualy, I thought it was MVP (Mitrol Valve Relapse) and was written to honour the first succesful heart operation to cure that condition and/or replace the valve (something like that) in the States (the actual city escapes me now); hence 'Turning Your Heartbeat Up'.

Yes that is correct, but many other "second" rooms opened slightly later than the main hall at many niters. Twas' the norm back then. .

POSSE-EVIL

Good morning Harry,

"Evil" was a "early doors sound" which is inkeeping with your thread. :thumbsup: I am sure many other's can associate musically with. Here's a few the masses should be able to connect or relate to from around that period;

Paul Newman and The X Caliburs - Aint You Got A Heart

Leslie Uggams - Don't You Even Care

Frankie and Johnny - I'll Hold You

The Cooperettes - Everythings Wrong

Grand Piano Company - Esperanto

Judy Harris - You Touched Me

And turning this thread topic upside down' - here's one very special record of companionship that Sam would end his 6.00 am spot with -The Kapp Ivory Project - "Its Over". .

(P.S - it's was an 80's beat ballad well termed a "floater" or a "two stepper" . Whatever sound clip and a minter for sale of Kapp Ivory available through Dave Thorley at Top Dog Records)

Speaking of the WC Friday Oldies night, I can remember a LP being used ot open proceedings on a least a couple of occasions: "Motown Memories 16 Non-stop Hits" (the one where the tracks run into the next with no break) - Side 2 which starts with Festival Time. I can recall it getting at least as far as Back Street which is the fifth track.

Never been one for getting there right at the start. Getting there before it finished was an achievement at one stage in my life

One thing that has always struck me as odd is when DJs say they 'ease' people into a set. Wtf? Start as you mean to go on that's what I say - all guns blazing!

Thats because they don't want to play their rarest stuff to an empty room ! :D

Not too sure if the first record of the night is that important.Usually its played to make sure the gremlins are'nt going to jump out.

So the one after that is really the first record of the night..i'll get my coat.

First record of a dj set,no matter what time,is.

Another favourite that got me going was Sidney Barnes I Hurt On The Other Side, I remember getting home with my newly aquired Blue Cat WD, I must have played it six times to my Dad saying listen to that piano during the key change, again he just looked at me with a straight face and said you are as soft as s..... he had a wonderful way with words and Icant help but smile when ever I hear it.God Bless ya Tommy.

I like something like Herb Ward Strange Change. Nice easy start which builds and builds. As for Fats Domino It Keeps Raining. That was played by RS at WC oldies nights to end his spot. Also I seem to recall that he often ended the nighter doing the last spot in the morning with Fats rather than the usual 3 before 8 which was the Sat night domain. Confused you will be.

Hi Steve, I remember Fats getting played at the oldies (dont remember it being played last though), always seemed to be before or after Bobby Bland - Call On Me

Yes funnily enough I had a tape from Tony Warot way back around 77/78 with Fats then Bobby Bland. Strange! Must have been something I guess. However I DO recall RS playing Fats to end his spot. As I said I am almost certain RS used to have the last spot on the Sat morning as well.

I remember sitting with you & Mr Warot scoffing sweet & sour chicken in Foster Hill Rd after The Pilgrims one Thursday night & Tony giving you a tape 1978 time.......Strange indeed if that was the tape in question !!

Stood in the queue waiting to go in

Can just hear a distant beat conning from the dance floor can't quite make out what the tune is , but the. excitement and expectation is starting to get the adrenalin going!

Bump bump bump goes the beat still can't make it

Testing one two three

Can't wait to get in

Get in

Another tune is on

I never get to know what was playing first!!

Forget to ask as I get carried away with being at another soul night

( at least I hope that this will happen tonight at the wheel!)
