Sleeps45 Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 dont get much better than this the flip to you dont love me no more their other smoke 45 is real nice too "where do i go from here"
boba Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Mamselles-open up your heart/it wont take much "to bring me back"-Abc I actually don't like either side of this record very much, it's okay, not "monster". The linda jones version of "it won't take much" is much better in my opinion (but it doesn't have a northern flip).
boba Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Mark-keys-My sweet baby/Heavenly thing-Tcb nice one
Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I've always liked the flip to "Its a new day".....ooooer !! Andy 2
Popular Post Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted January 16, 2012 Popular Post Posted January 16, 2012 Flip to Albert Jones monster "I do Love you" Andy 5
boba Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I've always liked the flip to "Its a new day".....ooooer !! this is one of my favorite records of all time. but both sides are about the same tempo. does one side get played as a northern cut?
Soulhawk Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 nice one Bob, do you know the later red label version of the Mark-keys - 'Heavenly Thing'? I think I prefer that one simply because it's rarer
boba Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Bob, do you know the later red label version of the Mark-keys - 'Heavenly Thing'? I think I prefer that one simply because it's rarer I still don't, I had an opportunity to get one cheap years ago and didn't because I was confused about it being a totally different version -- I had a recording and just thought it was a different edit for some reason
Cobbles Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 flipside of limelights "don't leave me baby " uncle....... bloody brilliant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! franc. 1
boba Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 flipside of limelights "don't leave me baby " uncle....... maybe I'm just misremembering this song but I vaguely remember a slower version of this song with someone with a deeper voice. Is there another version of this song?
Soulhawk Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 (edited) I still don't, I had an opportunity to get one cheap years ago and didn't because I was confused about it being a totally different version -- I had a recording and just thought it was a different edit for some reason it's a different version alright - parts 1 & 2 - same falsetto the second side starts with what Bob Mays calls 'the sexy talking part' Edited January 17, 2012 by soulhawk
boba Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 it's a different version alright - parts 1 & 2 - same falsetto the second side starts with what Bob Mays calls 'the sexy talking part' yeah I know it's totally different now, the recording I had of the 1974 version was muffled which made me think it was the same just recorded poorly or transferred poorly. Is there a red label and a blue label of the later version? I vaguely remember seeing a blue label but I'm probably confused about that now.
Cobbles Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 flip john bowie classic........ flip ellusions classic....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paVn3V-CimI IN THE BACK OF THE NET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2

I've got a red one - if blue copies exist I haven't seen them the tcb is blue my guess is that the group is from Flint - related to Velvettes & the Bar-Bee's on Stepp?
boba Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I never heard the john bowie before, I liked it (desipte it not having a vocal group).

boba Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 A monster one out of Detroit also but which I can't find on youtube is the Fabulous Impacs - I'll be crying
Cobbles Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 flip of del-tours "sweet n lovely"(starville).... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtC4jYiiaRM
Soulhawk Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 A monster one out of Detroit also but which I can't find on youtube is the Fabulous Impacs - I'll be crying aka Black Merda there's a good / contemporaneous version of that on the flip to Gwen Owens - 'I Lost a Good Thing' on Velgo
boba Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 aka Black Merda there's a good / contemporaneous version of that on the flip to Gwen Owens - 'I Lost a Good Thing' on Velgo I knew they evolved into black merda. Did you know that the impacs on land are a totally unrelated group that were fans of the impacs so they took on their name after their name changed?
Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 this is one of my favorite records of all time. but both sides are about the same tempo. does one side get played as a northern cut? I've heard it played a few times over the years Bob in more enlightened venues

Did you know that the impacs on land are a totally unrelated group that were fans of the impacs so they took on their name after their name changed? I think VC told me their management had the rights to the name & recruited a new group? there were many cases like that in Detroit in the 60s - the Falcons jump to mind
Guest Preems Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Here's a nice "B" side lol https://youtu.be/UNrLDBdKkdw also the flip to I Never Knew by Eddie Foster "I Will Wait" is fantastic, but not on youtube, maybe I'll try my hand at uploading. The DeVons Never Find a Love Like Mine, also not on the tube, is a gret ballad on the flipside of Someone to treat me
Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 flip john bowie classic........ IN THE BACK OF THE NET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like it Frankie. Actually better IMHO than the flip side
Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Here's a nice "B" side lol Always loved this......fookin soul music !!
boba Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Here's a nice "B" side lol The Cheers record is such a classic killer Chicago record. I didn't know anyone even played the other side. I don't know if I've ever even flipped it over. Richard Pegue (who produced their first hit "I'm not ready to settle down") even told me this okeh record was his favorite record of theirs (despite his non-involvement!).

I actually did buy this for "Take Me to Paradise" but the A side is so amazing that I have all but forgotten it. Made up my mind is really fabulous
Toprankin Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 for me the Chantels 'its just me' burns 'indian giver' and Johnny Bartel's 'i waited too long' takes it over 'if this isn't love' agree with Boba on the Rock Candy - that is a classic - although the 'alone with no love side' has grown on me over time!

Ady Potts Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 The flip side to The Exits - Another sundown in Watts - Kapp is quite nice... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4siGuC6z8dY 2
boba Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 The flip side to The Exits - Another sundown in Watts - Kapp is quite nice... this is especially true given that the "sundown" side is an attempt to do a similar song as "under the street lamp" hoping it would hit again.
Ted Massey Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Cant be arsed to lok all the way through so dont know if this has been posted great mid tempo detroit 1

boba Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 yeah, the northern side on that is good but the ballad is much better. also if you get the first press on gate it's on vinyl.

Manfromsoul45s Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 A matter of taste Frankie Baby...I do have a soft spot for GF though.
mshoals Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 The A-side to Daisy Burris' "Four Strong Winds" on Deesu, "In Love To Stay" is a great Allen Toussaint ballad. 1
