Weingarden Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Wow wow wow! I recently flipped over Herb Johnson "I'm So Glad" and the Four Perfections "I'm Not Strong Enough" for the first time and played them at my DJ night out of curiosity...Now I may never flip 'em back! What else should I flip over?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArEM3pfFk7A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsDw-Cx3huY&feature=related 2
Weingarden Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Ha, by "flip over" I meant "turn over and play the B-side."
Premium Stuff Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) Hey Matt - great idea for a thread Here's one. Flip over the Northern side - Nelson Sanders - Mojo Man (Rambler) You get - I'm Lonely (which was the official A-Side) I once wrote this about the song which tells you something about how I feel about it ... Rambler was part of Lou Beatty's La Beat set-up, and for me this is the most gut-wrenching soulful vocal performance ever committed to vinyl - deep, deep soul. The genius of this recording lies in the combination of the emotionally raw vocal, with the powerful simplicity of the lyrics. Blows me away every time! And if you like up-tempo stomping Detroit - just flip it over for 'Mojo Man'. Cheers Richard https://soundcloud.com/user1502162/nelson-sanders-im-lonely Edited January 13, 2012 by Premium Stuff 2
Weingarden Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Yes, Richard. "I'm Lonely" is surely in my all-time top ten (or so).
Kris Holmes Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 oh my god, there are so many, will report back with some killers.
Dylan Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 crikey this could be a good thread a major one to start with is sam williams on tower. "lets talk it over" is immense. 1

Codfromderby Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 that four perfections is ace , only had a copy for about ~~~~ years ! never played that side.

Premium Stuff Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Apologies if this is not quite a ballad - Gwen Owens - "Still True To You" is a slow sound from my youth Cheers Richard 1

Garethx Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) That Gwen Owens is a lovely side in its own right. Edited January 13, 2012 by garethx
Autumnstoned Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Ann Sexton - Come On Home - flip of I Still Love You is superb. 1
Garethx Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 The other side of James Barnett is a decent Fame slowie.
Guest Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Alice Clark - Say You'll Never Leave Me - superb.
Garethx Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Until the youtube era I'd never heard Ray Paige's "Don't Stop Now" on RCA, the other side of his version of Ain't No Soul. I'd never have thought of buying that, but the ballad side is immense. He later re-cut it in a more latin style on Fania under his (presumably) real name, Rafi Pagan. On a more recent in-demander I was very impressed by the ballad side of Double O's Demingoes "Color One Tear Black". I think the uptempo version of the same track wears pretty quickly but the slow version is a real mind-blower.

I think the uptempo version of the same track wears pretty quickly but the slow version is a real mind-blower. yeah, this one is one of the greatest sweet soul cuts. another, which is my all time favorite, is rock candy "I don't think I'll ever love another" both are the a-sides of the records
Nick Soule Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 The Ringleaders - Let's Start Over (M-Pac) I really dislike 'Baby, What Has Happened To Our Love' ...has no bass.
boba Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 The a-side of the (IMHO terrible) northern side of the Districts on Nile is killer.
Rbman Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 (edited) I noticed in the Wants Section very recently that someone was asking for a one sided demo of The Volcanos "Storm Warning" ....that would deprive the owner of hearing "Baby" on the flip of the issue which I love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0v4I5NjTdk Edited January 14, 2012 by Rbman

Ted Ford "I Can't Give You Up" on Budd. Ted Ford "Please Give Me Another Chance" on SS7. and his gaye release can be added brilliant deep on the flip of a decent dancer. 1

Cobbles Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 hi, flip over and find .... devotions "can you explain it" nation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSatu4P385s and volumes "i'm gonna miss you" garu and uptowners "from lovers to friends" captown all i think are better than the "northern" sides !!!!!! only IMO of course !!!!!!! franc
Dylan Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Its usually the proper soul music and the real reason these records were recorded that hides on the back of the more acknowledged northern sides. 1
Guest espo Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 B side to Milton Harris "She,s hurting Me" on Mutt is "You should have told me"----brilliant early sounding soul with school orchestra brass section

Kev Cane Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Great thread Masqueraders-Average Guy (I ain,t gonna stop) Masqueraders-Please take me back (How big is big) High Keyes-Lets take a chance (Livin a lie) Chancellors-Sad Avenue (All the way from heaven) Debbie Taylor-I don,t wanna leave you (Just don,t pay) The ultimate IMHO More later Kev 2
Guest Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Gerri Hall, 'I Lost The Key'...one of my fave slowies EVER...found on the flip of her 'Who Can I Run To'.
Dylan Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Great call on the robert tanner frank. His other megatone also has brilliant deep flip side. and the talmadge arnmstrong one you put me onto all those years ago and got me on the slippery slope of searching for this stuff.

Is the flip to the expensive masqueraders on the yellow label a deep side as i've never heard it and suspect it might be.
Soul-slider Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Mike & The Censations, flip of 'Don't Mess with Me' (Highland) 'There Is Nothing i Can Do About it' ...brilliant beat ballad.!!

Garethx Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Can't believe I left Robert Tanner off the list I made above as it's probably one of the ultimate examples of this topic. "Be My Woman" is such a beautiful recording that it's well worth ballad fans trying to find a copy of "Sweet Memories" and saying to hell with the expense.
Sleeps45 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 the lovers on frantic-without a doubt / one way to love 1

Mal C Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 dream team-im not satisfied/there he is-gregory Thats the play side as far as I'm concerned... never really warmed to the frantic flip. M~ 1
Mal C Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I got a Jimmy Connor - Lets Get Married last year, fab track, but knocked out of the park for The reality of life, an all time favourite!! Makes the flip sound plaintive, and that SAX...!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUwqlSHensM Mal.C
