Glad I'm not alone in liking it - Unfortunately this ones on Champion CHP-101-A, with another nice tune on the B side - I.O.U. Forgive my ignorance but does that make Champion a re-issue label? Dave

Dave In this case, yes - the Champion issue of Johnny Caswell is a reissue, the only original release was on Decca - however there are originals on Champion, most notably Gloria Jones "Tainted Love"

Sunnysoul Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 (edited) Was Johnny caswell released on HMV in australia, what is the connection with Decca. SHEEEP No no no .... Cheryl Gray (later to become Disco Soul singer Samantha Sang "Emotion" !!!) did a frantic cover version of it in '66, only ever released in Australia on HMV. I have a nice mint copy for sale @ 100 UK GBP if anyone's interested. First in, best dressed ! Includes P & P ! Johnny Caswell's original was NOT released in Australia. By the way , Johnny Caswell was a lily-white Italian pop singer, must say IMO I could never understand the record's popularity on the Northen Scene , but then that's what I love about the Northern Scene! To each his own as they say ! But please file Johnny next to the Shakers , August and Deneen , and Bobby Goldsboro !!!!! Edited November 27, 2005 by sunnysoul

Guest dkd Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Thanks to you all for the information. Sheep - I am quite new to the 'scene' and have only been collecting records etc. this last year or so. I do buy some stuff 'blind' just for the thrill of it, but most often use the bizarre yardstick of if I like it i'll try and buy it and if I dont I won't - once I've found something I like its then quite nice to track the history. Thanks again, Dave ps since I've got into the music I've bought a s**t load of records, been to quite a few events and now help to run a night in East London - this site has helped me considerably in these endevours.

A fabulous blue eyed 45 produced by my good friend John Madara. First played in March 1974 by Ian Levine at Blackpool Mecca. Caswell signed to DECCA as a straight Len Barry sound a like in 1966. Today, JC is a successful Stage Hire company owner in Las Vegas. Kev Roberts

SHEEP SHEEP No problem mate - the more I play this track the more I like it - my 'good in a querky kind of way' has been upgraded to abolutely brilliant (I gave it a spin on Saturday night and was a bit suprised as it didn't get many dancers - however I intend to persevere until they see it my way) Dave
Billywhizz Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 This must have come out in some other country besides the .US.? Would be interested if anybody knows. SHEEP US only 99% sure female version very much underrated Australia released only
Guest Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I'm totally obsessed with "I.O.U." on the flip - the best record the truly great Len Barry never made. I bet there's an unreleased or guide vocal version out there somewhere. Mine's a 'Champion' boot too but I don't care because it's about the music innit ? Incidently, on the subject of Champion boots, which are the legit releases and which ones aren't?
Guest Dan Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 i don't much care for this record any more (oldies-wise play it next to lou pride, any of ray pollard's stuff, either magnetics (sable or bonnie) or a million others and the reason is obvious) but it will always have a place in my heart from 1983/4 or whenever i first heard it on one of the great early kent albums (along with things like jean carter, the demures etc). being 15 or 16 and basically a clash/jam/truth fan who thought soul began with needle in a haystack and ended with heard it through the grapevine it was fabulously exciting to hear all these new records. always used to amuse me how johnny sings 'the sun don't come out much any more...etc', basically a tale of heartbreak, with possibly the most upbeat melody and singing style in northern soul
Guest Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 Bought the green Champion boot about mid 70s & yes a poperoonie but a bloody good one in a Len Barry sorta way. Personally I love it but those tra la las half way through are very cringe worthy always liked I.O U. as well
Dayo Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 The bottom line (for me) is this: IT WAS GREAT TO DANCE TO!
Billywhizz Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I always thought is was Ted Massey who first spinned it,not Levine

macca Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 very fond memories of this track. I think it was the first thing I heard when I passed through the casino's doors for the first time on feb 2nd 1975, either that, or the salvadors, or larry santos, or dena barnes... the old memory doesn't serve me very well, alas... has anybody stopped to think about this song's mariachi flavour? there's definitely a tex-mex feel to it... get the old mescal out & give it some!! a clarion call intro too. they seemed to be so important back then... I remember cheryl gray's version being popular at st.ives circa 1977. ginger used to spin it I think. frantic pace, though marred by an over-white vocal in my opinion...
