I remember a guy from Wigan 78ish who I bought a chapter 5 issue from with no centre, the record was massive at the time, can't even remember how much it cost me, all I remember is the guys name was hovis and he hung around with a smaller guy ,I think they were from Leeds maybe Sheffield way. They were always in the record bar at wc doin some hustling and trading bigger sounds, basically try to have people over, any clues to who they were!, it's cool don't worry I'm not after any money back or redemption after all these years lol. Just curious about who they were

He was from York wasn't he, always discovered British stuff and supplied them to Alan Rhodes, used to see him most mornings after the Casino, Paul will remember (60s soulboy).

He found Charlie Gracie and John Drevars.

Strange thing is I used to hang around in the record bar at Wigan, used to be from Sheffield & my nickname at work was Hovis but it's not me as I wasn't given this nickname until about 1995 & if anyone calls it me now I'll glass e'm :shhh::yes::D

Think I remember the John drevars connection, he had proper curly hair cut quite neat and his mate was smaller with a biggish nose and always flogging a copy of benzine vot. Always felt dubious of em whenever they looked at my box, proper pair of sharks lol

Could be. Probably said York cos Alan Rhodes was from there.

Yeh the Hovis i knew had very tight curlie hair he had a mate with a large nose and another mate who was on the large side but the other member of his group was a young girl called i think Julie or Jackie she worked at Thorn lighting in Shaw , and apart from really fancying her (she was lovely) she used to print out large wants lists for me at work , a large bundle of which i have just pulled out of my desk now !

at the time i also went with out gear , but could sometimes get my hands on some , so i used to give it to her and she would sell it for me to fund my other habbit (Records)

His name was Derek Oversby. A bunch of us from Oldham used to go the Casino together and initially it was me, him, Rob Caulfield aka 'Tan' and few others including a kid called Vas whose real name I can't remember. The girls were Anita (aka Kit Kat Kate), Julie and Cath. I eventually drifted away from that crowd and started hanging around with Rod Shard and Dave Withers in the back bar. Don't recall him being particularly dodgy, especially in the context of the time when trying to be a bit of a hustler was kind of normalised

I think Hovis Djd in Mr Ms for a while when I had some time off after discovering punk. When I started going back again after about a year Hovis was in to 2 tone and more or less off the scene.

Some of the timeline and spelling of names above is probably wrong.

Indeed I did mate. That was where I saw Martin Ellis do the most disgusting thing I'd ever seen.

Also in the gang were Carts and Scottish Kenny. Earlier one there were Pemmy (Tony Pemberton) a guy with a polish name (John Wojowski or something like that?) My memory of those times is really fading nowadays though.

Yeah was just kidding. My nose might be a bit on the largish side but I don't think I was the guy the topic starter was talking about. During that period Hovis would have been knocking around with someone else as I was more in the Rod/Dave gang when I came back.

Hovis turned into a proper wheeler dealer during my time off and I guess he was a prototype 'hot boxer' as he always had a handful of top sounds but got them by selling all off last month's records. I was more of a hardcore collector and at the risk of being immodest, my collection would have wiped the floor with his before I sold up for the first time.

Tan and I stayed friends for quite a while and we both got into post punk stuff and used to go and see bands at the Ritz. Kind of drifted apart eventually and in 1983 I moved to Oxford, then went to London and ended up here in Scarborough and never had any contact with that old crowd again. Life's changed since then and I don't really look back. Speaking of which, the beach is calling.

Nice to chat

I cannot add a lot to this thread, apart from at wigan, hovis, hung around the stage at wigan, right hand side, facing stage, and when I knew him, indeed was very good aquaintance, with Alan Rhodes. Hovis was responsible, for nightwatch-lips to your heart.

As godzilla said, hovis was from Oldham, & you are correct in thinking thats where our crowd hung around.(front right of stage) or the record bar

we will most likely know each other if you were mates with hovis at the time. :hatsoff2:

All absolutely correct, apart from the fact that Charlie Gracie UK Demo that Alan Rhodes had cost a fiver, and had been in the very back of some guys sale box in the record bar at Wigan for about 6 weeks - £5 - Alan and Hovis had both seen it, I kept looking at it myself and couldn't decide whether to risk it or not... then one night Alan said, I bought that red & white demo, I'll play it for you and you'll kick yourself!" - he did, and I did!

He must have two then because he originally played it off a no centre Stateside issue, I went up and looked at it

It did have no centre - but was definitely a demo he played 1st time at the Casino

Unless the demo was Hovis's. He did play a few of his records every week

He found Charlie Gracie and John Drevars.

John Drevars Expression were a 60's band from Southampton (slightly moddy) and well known to everyone there.

Pretty sure Shay ( who I believe was from down that way) played it at Yate in '76 or '77 and was the first to play it. It was his big tune (sound) at the time. Happy to be proved wrong, but credit where it's due
