January 7, 201213 yr Author A member said I should put this here for input from other collectors to figure this out. It was suggested in another forum that it is not Kelly Garrett or Pet Clark, but I thought it was Kelly Garrett. That's why I'm asking for your help Thanks, Brian
January 7, 201213 yr Author I have another acetate that I need help finding out who the singer is. https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/acetate-uknown-artist-this Edited January 7, 201213 yr by chalky mp3 removed
January 7, 201213 yr Mp3'd removed as per site rules. Sorry but we cannot allow mp3's, legal & file sharing being the main reasons. Can I suggest members sign up to sound cloud, it takes just a couple of minutes to upload the sound file, you then click on share and grab the link to post here.
January 7, 201213 yr I have another acetate that I need help finding out who the singer is. https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/acetate-uknown-artist-this That was as good as the Love Is The Only Answer is..er..indifferent, really Drifters influenced, doo-wop backing, good vocalist - does it have a chorus? Great stuff.
January 7, 201213 yr Can anyone here give your opinion of who the singer is on this acetate. Thanks, Brian https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/acetate-kelly-garrett-love-is Bobby Martin- I think it is and goes with the United artist label
January 7, 201213 yr Bobby Martin- I think it is and goes with the United artist label Well done Steve.
January 7, 201213 yr I have another acetate that I need help finding out who the singer is. https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/acetate-uknown-artist-this Sounds a bit like Doug Banks.
January 7, 201213 yr Author That's funny that you mentioned him because there was a 45 acetate from the same collection by him(I sold that a while back), so it could be.
January 7, 201213 yr I can see where coming from with the Doug Banks but sounds a bit too white for Doug??? Could have done with hearing the chorus.
January 7, 201213 yr Author I just remembered I have an acetate from that collection of her hit ''for the love of him'' but it's the same as the 45 release and it came with lyric sheet, so it was easy to identify who it was. see scan..

January 7, 201213 yr Author I just played this acetate and played the loves the only answer back to back. The voices sound different to me. I checked the internet, but could not find that Bobbi did a version of it and she has passed as of May 2000 from cancer. I checked ascap a little, but could not find the exact title. I'll have to do some more searching. I tried to upload the song on the cloud, but got blocked. Edited January 7, 201213 yr by briank
January 8, 201213 yr That's funny that you mentioned him because there was a 45 acetate from the same collection by him(I sold that a while back), so it could be. I think this is doug banks because I have a doug banks Bell Sound acetate with the title, "this little boy of mine" It's a faster version of this clip. The flip side is "baby since you went away" which was the flip side to the argo release.
January 8, 201213 yr Author The Doug Banks acetate I had was ''I just kept on dancing'' on one side. I do not remember the b side. It was 7 inch and no indication of the artist. This one I have is a 10 inch and no b side. Maybe the attached scan will help some.
January 8, 201213 yr Author I just noticed he last names were cut off on scan...the are Murry Wecht and Johnny Walsh.

It was suggested in another forum that it is not Kelly Garrett or Pet Clark, but I thought it was Kelly Garrett. That's why I'm asking for your help Thanks, Brian Did Petula Clark also sing this?
January 8, 201213 yr Author I don't know. I said that the guy I got it from thought it was Pet Clark. Have you heard Kelly Garrett sing it live on the Playboy After Dark show?
January 8, 201213 yr acetates that come with sheet music are generally songwriter demos and won't be an identifiable recording artist (unless the writer is also a known singer or if the writer got someone else to sing I guess).
January 9, 201213 yr Author Thanks neckender, I think you are correct. Is there a way for you to put up a clip of your acetate? Thanks for everyone's input..
January 9, 201213 yr So, the "loves the only answer" seems to be Bobby Martin, have I read this right?
January 9, 201213 yr Author That was stated I think because of the record being on United Artist which was the label Bobbi Martin recorded for, but I am not completely convinced of that when I play both song back to back. Still sounds more like Kelly Garrett to me, but that is my opinion. Who do you think it is?
January 10, 201213 yr Ain't heard it but one of the songs was co-written by Azie Mortimer, could it be her? Ady
January 11, 201213 yr Author I just listed to one of her songs on utube and It might be her, but not sure. Nobody else has responded so it's still up in air for me.
January 11, 201213 yr acetates that come with sheet music are generally songwriter demos and won't be an identifiable recording artist (unless the writer is also a known singer or if the writer got someone else to sing I guess). Aren't they often sung by someone from the same labels stable of singers though Bob? Weren't some songs done by whoever was in the studios at the time as a sort of test recording or to see what kind of voice it suited? I thought that was why there were often acetates of well known songs by other bigger (or smaller) artists on the same label. Joey Heatherton/Len Barry on Decca etc, all of which would support the Bobbi Martin theory for "Loves The Only Answer"
January 15, 201213 yr Author I contacted United Artists and they did not have Bobbi Maritin as doing this song,
January 15, 201213 yr Don't have the 45 myself so just throwing this out there... might be the following 45 from 1969? Orsa Lia - Love's The Only Answer / World I Used To Know - UNITED ARTISTS 50514

I thought that was why there were often acetates of well known songs by other bigger (or smaller) artists on the same label. Joey Heatherton/Len Barry on Decca etc, all of which would support the Bobbi Martin theory for "Loves The Only Answer" I definitely agree that acetates were done for different reasons (including the one you mentioned). I was just saying that sheet music makes it likely that it was a songwriter shopping a song around. The song writer could have gotten a "professional" to sing it though.
January 15, 201213 yr Author I agree with you boba, but I think all the artists mentioned so far would be considered ''professionals", no?

Can anyone here give your opinion of who the singer is on this acetate.
