Jerry Hipkiss Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 My good mate Paul O'Brien called me from Barnstaple (North Devon) yesterday to tell me he'd just heard P.P.Arnold "Everything's gonna be alright" in the Orange phone shop!
Markw Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 I was having dinner with a friend in a branch of Old Orleans in Ipswich some time ago. In between the piped background music I heard "I Don't Need No Doctor" by Ray Charles! Old Orleans plays some surprising stuff!! Apart from Motown standards, I've heard a fair bit of Northern like Rufus Lumley "I'm Standing". Few months back, they even played Mel & Tim "Forever and a Day".....TOP TUNE!!
Guest vinylvixen Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 I went in the KFC in Wolverhampton on monday and they were playing a mix tape which had The Cavaliers "Hold to my baby" and The Victors "Hurt" on it! Marks & Spencers - Hammersmith - Temps - Girl, why you wanna make me blue..........nearly keeled over into the salami selection there were loads more but that's all I can remember...... Old Orleans plays some surprising stuff!! Apart from Motown standards, I've heard a fair bit of Northern like Rufus Lumley "I'm Standing". Guest Trevski Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 TK Max, York Ann Sexton! Three weeks later, same song, but in Boots! A bit of tape swapping going on
Guest ShaneH Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 i am sure a lot of the big companies have to buy complilation cd's from specialist companies who get tunes cleared legally. i imagine they pay quite a bit for these too. maybe someone out there knows the score? shane
SteveM Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Crikey - I remember Just Pants in Worcester! used to get me Brutus shirts and trousers in there! Colin Brutus. Equivalant to Matalan these days. Ben Shermans and Sta Pres Colin
pikeys dog Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 The Devonshire Cat pub in Sheffield. Spent an entire Friday afternoon in there listening to the Northern being played over the system. Some quite obscure stuff as well - definately not a "Now That's What I Call Northern" CD.
Guest Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Xmas shopping again today, in BHS heard Trammps - Hold Back The Night had to make a quick exit, the song drives me crazy
Rugby Soul Club Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 On holiday in Newquay, the local woolworths was playing a northern compilation CD......I asked the young girl behind the counter "what's this" (meaning what is the CD)......."northern soul" she answered!!!!! She used to work in a record shop in Plymouth where the owner was into Northern and he'd played it that much that when she came to Newquay, she found herself picking them out to play......
Guest Byrney Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Heard Kurt Harris and Jesse James (Love is Allright) in Debenhams electical Department whilst perusing Ipods Regulary hear the odd track in scally clothes shops like Limeys in Notts and Derby
Paul R Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 Just walked into Ottakers book shop in Portsmouth an hour ago. Sufferin' City Johnny Copeland was on, so I stayed listening and an old ska track I didn't know came on. I walked up to the coffee bar and sat for a while and they played Hit & Run, California Montage, Landslide, Girl across the Street, With These Hands, interspersed with a couple more reggae/ska tracks and bizzarly Accidents will happen, Elvis Costello. I was going to ask about the music but in the end didn't, so I don't know if one of the staff brought a home compilation in or it was the shops. I could have stayed all afternoon Paul

Guest Neil-ok Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Quite often here some northern played at matalan(blame the wife) in warrington but knowing a few old soulies from around that way it dosent suprise me. Im sure ive heard some of the more obscure soul music in most lifts in the country at some time mind you some of it is that bad it only deserves to be played in a lift. Hmm thats got me thinking is there such a thing as a lift DJ? or a few who deserve to be?

Tsu Tomatoes Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 I've just got in from a few beers and went to KFC opposite Liverpool Street Station for a zinger burger. The piped music played Tony Clarke- Landslide, a version of Solomon Burke's-Cry to me (not the ballady one by Betty forgot her name) & Rose Batiste-Hit & Run. Good to hear stuff like that 'out' even though I'm not a Northern bod. My bubble was burst though when the cab home had I Will Survive playing. Just as well it's only a short journey!!
Guest Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Hope & Glory in Bluewater often play northern soul tracks, they also do a great range of soul t-shirts with rare records on them, and rather spiffing DJ t-shirts
Paulb Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 The fred perry shop in manchester always has loads of northern on. I think that they once had a few dj's on too?
Guest Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 I was in River Island in Chelmsford today and nearly fell over when I heard a Northern Toon coming from the speakers. I saw it as a sign that the jeans were talking to me, 'buy me, buy me' they said.... Then the vocal came in and I realised it was female and wasn't the same record, same backing different vocals, quite nice tho. Don't ask me what it was, an old Shifty spin for sure. Anyway, the jeans stopped talking to me and I walked out. OH the power of music!! I am going to buy the jeans tomorrow! I think! Annie
