Pete S Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 (edited) Reading the sales lists, I can't believe the prices some of the sellers on here charge. Is it some new phenomenon, trying to become the most expensively priced sellers or something? Do they ever sell anything? * at the opposite end of the scale, I've seen two or three really good lists today with very good, sensible prices. Edited January 5, 2012 by Pete S 1

Is it some new phenomenon, trying to become the most expensively priced sellers or something? Do they ever sell anything? Agree with you Pete. Though there always been certain sellers trying to get top prices for their rather common stuff and I seriously doubt they ever sold anything on SS
Harry Crosby Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 What gets me is, and this happens quite often, someone puts a record up for sale, and then on the same day another one goes up from another seller at nearly 3 times the price? makes me wonder if people actually want to sell there records. I personally do a site search in sales and find what records are sold for, before pricing mine up.
John Moffatt Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 (edited) You're dead right Pete, but isn't it the case though that, throughout the existence of Northern Soul, a great many sellers have asked for, and got, sums that are well over the top? I think that applies whether on SS or anywhere else. Why are only about 10% of records on Ebay put up for auction? Could it be that most are listed as Buy-It-Now because they would never realise the same price if auctioned? Then, I wonder how many BINs actually sell anyway. Discuss.... boba Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I just laugh and move on. It is sad if the seller got burned themselves and paid a zillion dollars for the record. it usually just looks like greed.
Pete S Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 wonder where I heard that then... I never buy British stuff, but its great and cheap! M Think it got in the charts, might have been on Pick Of The Pops! The only Lulu record I've got is To Sir With Love. Brilliant.

Missgoldie Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Collectors have an emotional attachment, I think that gets factored into the cost
Mal C Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Collectors have an emotional attachment, I think that gets factored into the cost Yeah, I try to resist that these days. Somebody told me, they always come round, you always get them in the end; which is 95% true, so makes sense to wait and buy em cheaper and in allot of cases in better nick...
Mal C Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Interesting, If Huns review is being offered at £400, you can on the same day get Illusions for £595.00...
Dylan Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 It's just a reflection on record sales everywhere I don't see this place as any different good and bad prices on a regular basis. IMO If people are going to spend a lot of money on a record it should be because they love the record and have already spent a l0ot of time and effort looking for it. That way they can be reasonably sure its not an easy find. If you jump in feet first and spend big it doesn't deserve much sympathy.
Sutty Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Just as amusing are the sellers trying to get £50 or whatever for a modern 12" because someone played it out last week and 'lifted the roof off' (aka someone went bananas on the dance floor for 5 minutes lol) when there are multiple copies on discogs starting at some crazy price like £1.99 - seen this many many times, Have these people not heard of google? Cheers Sutty
Supercorsa Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Some sellers I find are consistently overpriced, as a result I don't even bother to look at their sales. Admittedly I'm far from being a large or prolific spender, it's just that there's nothing more disparaging than seeing titles listed in the topic title that I'm after only to find them priced up at astronomical prices.
Ted Massey Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 wish you had named them Pete now that would have been interesting
boba Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I love when people post their ridiculous prices and write "bargain".
Dave Moore Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I love when people post their ridiculous prices and write "bargain". Or "Priced to sell" Regards, Dave

Modernsoulsucks Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I love when people post their ridiculous prices and write "bargain". As the moderator of the Sales forum gotta admit there have been times when I've been almost tempted to edit such claims but always manage to stop myself. I do however understand that certain things will sell overpriced or not. And that prices have increased overall dramatically for a lot of items by a factor of 10 or 20. But I don't get that everything gets put up accordingly. ROD

Guest Bearsy Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 what about the "In Demanders" that are up for sale sometimes, in demand for what and who ?? some sellers are clearly trying to take the piss cos its costs naff all to sell on here, i am with Corsetboy and dont even look at some sellers sales cos whatever they may have i would never dream of paying their prices and why do people close their sales threads ?? me personally i never close my sales threads just incase i get a price wrong or if someone can correct something or even enhance the sale with info i may not know, horses for courses but sellers this is Soul Source not a frigging shares and stocks city slickers trading floor
Modernsoulsucks Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 My fave is "clearing some space" or similar followed by a handful of titles. Bloody big records or very small house. ROD
boba Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 My fave is "clearing some space" or similar followed by a handful of titles. Bloody big records or very small house. ROD although I still don't understand it, I think sometimes it means clearing some space in their "box", as in their tiny box of records that own that they paid a zillion dollars for instead of more better but cheaper records. what happened to all that buzz about "hotboxing" that james trouble and others were talking about a few years ago? haven't heard people use that word in a while (which is good i guess).

Not sure if Ive still got a Uk Decca Demo of Leave a little love - lulu - Looks nice on the demo. ATB Steve On thread - Some people just want to show off what they have rather than want to sell. I suppose somepeople put up records at top price expecting to be knocked down! -I dont have problem with that- Its the ones who put top price and dont budge that get to me! Windlesoul Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 (edited) And how about a couple of some crafty techniques to maximise your sales on soul source guys and girls... Such as cross referencing your post to artist / label of the week forum Or adopt the mercenary approach of flogging all your tunes by the artist who's appeared in this week's obituary type post (happens on ebay all the time!) Business but is it ethical ? Oh yes! A lot of the comments folks have mentioned on this thread kinda just reflect general business conduct in the wider universe. The 'bargain' thing and similar descriptions are of course extremely subjective, merely an opinion of the seller. At the end of the day its the individual who decides (numpty or well informed individual) and you take the consequences if you're daft (or vulnerable) enough to make a move based on choice colourful words alone. Fabrication of the truth and sales bullshit goes on everywhere, though I dont only see it as seller deception to blame. Whether its haggling in a carpet shop in Turkey, looking in a shop window in the high street, or buying tunes off here, do your homework. Or if your clueless, as Harry said earlier it often only takes a quick search in previous SS sales / popsike / gemm etc to get a ball park figure (despite of course the limitations even of these!). I agree in general with what you are saying here (I think it's called "puffery"). But it's so much more extreme here, some people will have records up for literally 5x or more the going rate. Super shady used car salemen don't even do that.
Sutty Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I agree in general with what you are saying here (I think it's called "puffery"). Fantastic, 'why are you asking such a stupid price for this you bloody Soul Puff!' ;)

I think this then puts other buyers off and I can't be arsed with it. Locked thread solved this problem.

I had someone once telling me how they'd paid 2 grand or something for a record the day before then tried to get £10 off a record I was selling for £50.
Ged Parker Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I blame the idiots that pay the daft prices for encouraging the sellers to do it. A fool and his money are soon parted, but that isn't the end of, it oh. For every daft buyer that buys an over priced record just hikes up the average price seen when a seller does his research on a tune he's not sure how to price.
Ged Parker Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Good point. Especially about people always trying to get money knocked off. I had someone once telling me how they'd paid 2 grand or something for a record the day before then tried to get £10 off a record I was selling for £50. Perhaps thats how he can afford £2k records by getting you to part pay for them.

I had someone once telling me how they'd paid 2 grand or something for a record the day before then tried to get £10 off a record I was selling for £50. At the end of the day ...you as an individual have the right to say yes or no to offers ..its not offensive to ask. Records from 30-40 yrs back do not have a RRP ...you know what you payed for it,you know your profit margin...at the end of the day its about you making a decision ..be it a business decision ,to say no and hold out for a prce you think it is really worth ,or knowing you have a buyer and can still make a profit ? The problem is ,you are dealing your records on soulsource sales ,which is by and large a place for collector/dj's who do not do it as a business, but trade things to fund new purchases or wants. There is no price ...not everybodys livelihood depends on it. Some people see a record go for a big price on ebay or auction elsewehere and decide thats the going rate ,others use caution and expect to be bartered down ,so price high . The fact is ,its up to the individual to decide how to play it ,get it right or get it wrong ...but ultimately ,if you price too high ,you can always drop ,but you cant go up when the price was low and you just had 100 pm's asking for it and already sold it ...as well you know This must be the 2nd time i've seen this thread ,and probably the 2nd time youve posted it Pete ...surely if people are listing records for more than you think they are worth and theyre not selling ,its gotta be in your favour ?? If my life /job depended on selling records ,the last thing i'd want is records being listed cheap in sales . P.s Don't think ive ever seen John Manship /Tim Brown / Pat Brady etc etc ever complaining about other people selling records O.T.T .
Supercorsa Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Don't think ive ever seen John Manship /Tim Brown / Pat Brady etc etc ever complaining about other people selling records O.T.T . Not, when they some times lead the way in it. I've bought from each of these, but I have to admit that I sometimes think that they overprice stuff. Yes, people bang on about reputations and quality of service but being honest I tend to only venture onto the better known dealers when I can't get what I want cheaper elsewhere. Bit like shopping around for petrol really .
Pete S Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 P.s Don't think ive ever seen John Manship /Tim Brown / Pat Brady etc etc ever complaining about other people selling records O.T.T . Well two of them aren't on here and the other doesn't bother any more, so where would you have seen this? Plus they probably don't care about people being overcharged.

Harry Crosby Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I allways tend to buy from sites nowadays, simply because boxes at nighters etc seem to be way overpriced compared with the prices on here and other sites. Personally i find this a shame, as the one thing i loved was the buzz around a record bar, and learning from your peers
NEV Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Well two of them aren't on here and the other doesn't bother any more, so where would you have seen this? Plus they probably don't care about people being overcharged. Pete ...you'd have to be naive to think none of em watch this space ....but all three make a good living and you cant overcharge for a 30-40 yr old record ? You can overprice a record ..but you cant over-charge ?? Auctions are totally different .but set sale ...it either sells or it sits on a shelf . But seriously you should be rubbing your hands at ordinary folk on here over -pricing 45's .....as Harry clearly states " i always check recent sales to find out a price befofe i buy" i know H personally and take my hat off cos i would'nt buy anything before doing my research ...but on the other hand ..if i had just made a £100 profit on one of my sales and a record i had wanted for ages turned up suddely ,but was over-priced ...hey ho ..do i barter or use my profit and pay to get my long time want ?? Difference is ...soem people are collectors and the value aint the same as people who buy to sell etc ... P.s Tim /John and Pat all make good money out of it ...so how ,if are they over charging ??
Dylan Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I allways tend to buy from sites nowadays, simply because boxes at nighters etc seem to be way overpriced compared with the prices on here and other sites. Personally i find this a shame, as the one thing i loved was the buzz around a record bar, and learning from your peers I agree, in a ideal word the best way to buy records would be physically face to face but sometimes it can be a hassle having to look after a box of records all night, unless the record bar is buzzing and lots of deals are taking place I've spent hours in record bars and find them good for a chat and to learn and listen. Also face to face you can probably negotiate better than by e-mail or PM.
boba Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 FWIW, I'm used to haggling, you do it with every dealer at record shows, etc. Pete's list makes it clear by saying "no offers" but I don't see the point in getting offended otherwise. Do you not haggle at record bars at an event? When I was selling at soultrip plenty of people asked me for lower prices (although I guess I was surprised at the number of people not asking).
