hi all, got thinking about any "brilliant records" that seem to be non dancefloor friendly, records which have everything

a quality record should have being 60s 70s 80s etc, but, when it comes to the dancefloor...no response...

the record im finding this seems to happen when djing is; clarence reid - im your yes man - wand , imo a brilliant

45 which as everything a "proper" record should have, is this just me? or are there other "brilliant records" which have

the same non response? or should these records just be tucked away for home use only?

any thoughts, possible reasons, suggestions, similar stories etc

hi russ

i like it and im shocked it kills the floor

i dont understand either, hence the thread, just interested if there are other quality tunes

that have the same non dancefloor response or possible reasons ie; not known, wrong beat to dance

to etc if you get my drift

I'm a bit gobsmacked too to be honest.................perfect dance beat................can only presume it's just down to taste or maybe not well enough known in certain circles.

Records I really like, but in my opinion have a "tricky" beat

Gary Sole - Holdin' On - Knight

Velvet Satins - Nothing Can Compare To You - General American

C.O.D.'s - She's Fire - Kellmac

May be the opening bars sounding so much like The Rolling Stones 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' that it's the psychological trigger to cause dancers to think 'time for a sit down'?

Tricky! thank god Eddie Parkers "Love You BabY" ain't a recent discovery.

Clarence Reid isn't a top 500 tune so dancers need to tread carefully with this one

So if every DJ who owns a copy plays the balls off it till this time next year enough people might be brainwash enough to strutt their stuff to it. :wicked:

If rock guitars are a problem does this signal the end for Babe Ruth and Judy Freeman ? :g:

Dave :hatsoff2:

P.S Both Clarence Reid's on Wand although different tempo's are great records !!!!

Yep, agreed.

And "Yes man" doesn't work as well at soul nights as it does at Niters! But that's true of a lot of records.

:hatsoff2: HI AL,,, This is or could be the start of a thread that answers the age old question about why don't they dance to the classic I am playing, For my point of view there are some rules that apply to the subject , And readers please don't upset yourself at my points as they are just that my personal views over 35 years as collector and ex DJ,

  1. The Rare Soul Scene has always been a ad-hoc scene, when it comes down to Professional standards, Most top spinners who have survived are in fact a click of record dealers, who hasn't set foot on a dance floor in years, and if they do it is clear they are P***ed up! and can't dance, This is important as if you can't get into the dance groove! the dancers can't get into your groove? can you dig?
  2. 99.5% of the DJs have had no professional training and take little interest in the equipment they use, in one way this basic approach of the likable anorak playing very rare records is good, but take off the rose tinted glasses and say what you see, an old man playing his records?
  3. What records clear the dance floor? years ago it was once a record was available for £1 from Selectadisc and it's many out lets (many DJ dealers come to mind), also for some strange but odd logic it's they aren't use to your play list, (get into the groove thang) or the promoter has got you as a warm up man,
  4. Stop playing the same records that other DJs play as their play list, we all no where that can go.
  5. Stop playing the records that you play to yourself at home! remember the punters want a good night, see make sure you give them it!
  6. Stop playing to many records that are obscure to most all in one night, this is a common mistake by collectors when they are asked to do a spot, as the record at the start of this thread, is a classic case as it is a good record, and should get played, obscure records no matter what they are, like every thing needs to become familiar, that's why the younger DJs play a 30 minute loop and mix in records, the trick is to do the same in the way your records are selected, so over a 30 minute period you have kept a rhythm flow by not jumping the beat?/
  7. And finally a few weeks ago I went to GOODYEARS CLUB and people were dancing to Toots and the Maytals, nothing wrong with that if you are at a wedding? but what a £1 reggae record is doing being played at a rare soul night? and more to the point the dancers were dancing? can anybody explain how and why this record was played in the first place??

 now that only a start, a big question, my #7 is the one for me, would I travel 100 miles to here that? no! would you, apparently you would!!

Agree Velvet Satins not dance friendly, think it's just down to the timing of the beat.

Another like that at Wigan, was Charlie Gracie, He'll Never Love You Like I do, not a soulful record, quite poppy in fact, but at the time, I always thought dancing to it was neigh on impossible.

Like wise, a brilliant record, but can't found it difficult to get the beat is Pat Powdrllls Do It, too fast for an old git like me that one.

Aid.

track & sounds slower/warpy imo

Romona Collins dance floor death

agree with you Ted' always clears the dance floor

this doesn't look like a bootleg, it looks like a legit reissue (although I haven't personally confirmed the legitimacy of license, etc.)

correct, a legit reissue, not a bootleg.

To me they sound like Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" (the horns).

I don't see the comparison much, the primes record is really messy and muddy (it's good though).

Russ, don't worry about it mate there's been some big records that struggled for dance floor appreciation I remember requesting Eddie Daye, Daybreak, and numerous other quality soul records that haven't had dance floor acceptance.

love you- miss you- mean it

hi bob, in that vocally (imo) it's up there with the best !!....and i always liked to follow on the imperial cs with it in a set .....two classy vocal sounds together.

no they don't sound similar but are two very good group vocal records..argee a lot going on in the primes but that only makes it better for me and as the original poster asked ...difficult to dance to !!!...although i'd have a good go if i ever heard it out!!

cheers

I've heard the Primes played out a couple of times and it's so messy it is really hard to dance to. I think it's a nice record as well btw - and achingly rare it seems.

Clarence Reid only seems to work now and then dependant on how 'stomping' people feel like getting. I've seen it fill the floor at the 100 and also clear it on alternate months - to largely the same crowd!

The lame response to Bobby 'Guitar' Bennett has always amazed me - same pace and vocal style as say Bud Harper and big 45s of that ilk and with a Harold Melvin intro....whats not to like..??

Bobby Guitar has never got em up for me either, still love it though. Gwen Owens on Oncore is another

Hope you're well mate

Hi Phil -happy NY!

Shame to hear about Gwen Owens - love that as well. It's 'orrible when a 45 you really rate like these two seems to fall on deaf ears, whether you're playing them or in the crowd with everyone else.

George 'Juke' Byrd 'I Know I'm In Love With You' is another for me.....cannot understand why people don't want to dance to it at all. Maybe it IS sh!t?! :D:thumbsup:

I've been trying on and off with the Clarence Reid since the Neighbourhood days. I thinjk as with most records its a time and place issue. I'd rather there wasn't a distinction between a soul night and a nighter (and moany of the soul nights I attend there isn't ) but most often there is.

Emory and the Dynamics has been similar for me when I've tried it.

June Monday - Your Kind Of Loving and Willie Tee - Sweet Thing are two others (The Willie Tee only recently). Obviously these are all different to one another and I've hopefullyI tried to pick the right crowd but some records are just not well enough known I think. Or maybe it's me.
