Guest Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 (edited) I use the Record Collector standard to grade my records - as below: M is ONLY for reissues / new releases / sealed records M- is a pretty much unplayed record for me - any obvious signs that a record has been played and I usually downgrade to an EX+ EX+ is a very strong grade for me - just showing some signs of being played but no noise / cue burn / crackle / styrene burn at all. VG+ is for records that have obviously seen some wear and have had a good few plays and may even have light intro crackle but play very, very well. VG is for records with quite a bit of wear and surface markings and some noise / crackle but still a very good player VG- is my lowest grade and VG- records for me are in bad shape - lots of sound quality deterioration and many, many surface marks - not nice. All media links are directly underneath each item in red - just hover your mouse over the link and when it turns blue click on it and it will take you directly to the YouTube page or my own soundfile / scan. PM or email me on mail@resolutionrecords.co.uk ********************************************************************************************************** Four Tops 'Are You Man Enough' / 'Peace Of Mind' (ABC-Dunhill / USA / 1973 / M-) £5 ( YET another great black voice to grace my Xmas List this year - Levi Stubbs - OMG - this guy's vox make my veins melt - stunning - topside for me is THE cut from the 'Shaft In Africa' OST - stunning uptempo Northern dancer with all relevant boxes ticked - flip also well-worthy - love love LOVE this 45....just slightly dusty from a long spell in storage... ) Ray Crumley 'All The Way In Love With You' / 'It's Uncanny' (Alarm / USA / 1976 / Ex+) £15 £12 ( Great double-sider outta FLA - topside is a much-loved NS dancer which was big at The Blackpool Mecca as a new release back in the day - huge dancer - flip a bit more frantic but also worthy - also had a UK press on Magnet but I think this one is rarer? Cool black/white label demo copy here too... NOICE....immaculate copy... ) The Virtues 'Meditation Of The Soul' / 'Doin' It' (Andee / USA / 1960s / VG+) £12 ( Quite simply put, THE best Funky Sitar instrumental tune to NOT come out of India! Flip probably more interesting overall as it's a kinda squelchy / MOOG-y instrumental which was/is much more typical of the "sound" of that era in NYC...gleaming copy... ) 7025 - scan/soundfile I Stings 'They Never Love' / 'Version' (Black Skin / Jamaica / 1970s / M-) £5 ( Gotta be THE cleanest Jamaican record I've EVER handled - totally unplayed...stunning Roots tune here - pure Sufferers vibes with minimal backing that reminds me a lot of The Gatherers 'Words Of My Mouth' monster - check the Dub - it's wonderful too... ) Ike & Tina Turner 'The Hunter' (Blue Thumb / USA / 1970 / M-) £6 ( Beautiful copy - absolutely gleaming...love this!! Great version to the Booker T & The MGs cut from Ike Turner and the missus - cracking little Funk 45... ) Marlena Shaw 'Brother, Where Are You' (Cadet / USA /1960s / Ex+) £10 ( Such a joy to have this one in for y'all - stunning female / Jazz-Funk version of the Oscar Brown Jr cut which still sounds as fresh today as it did when I first heard it on the radio about 20 years ago c/o Kevin Beadle...big tune... ) 7036 - scan/soundfile Bobby Wilson 'Here Is Where The Love Is' (Chain / USA / 1973 / M-) £5 ( Gorgeous little Northern Soul 'floater' which just builds and builds - Bobby's vocals are top-notch here - released just before his seminal 'I'll Be Your Rainbow' LP on Buddah which is just magical - love stuff like this...gleaming copy, kids... ) The Spunky Onion 'Cookie Man pts 1 & 2' (Contempo / UK / 1974 / VG+) £10 ( I LOVE having this in stock, just so that I can listen to it a few times...such an amazing tune - pt 2 is also great - slightly different production feel but none the worse for that...few marks / scuffs here and there but a good player and a total bargain at a tenner... ) Maxine Brown 'I Can't Get Along Without You' (CUR / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £10 ( Wonderful mid-paced Northern Soul from golden-voiced Maxine...'Reason To Believe' on the flip is also damned fine...lovely copy here...actually reminds me a LOT of The Dells 'Make Sure' - very similar feel and tempo with a coupla soundalike changes too - sublime 45... ) Travelin' Soul 'Three The Hard Way' (Curtom / USA / 1974 / Ex) £5 ( Richie Tufo-produced / arranged Funky instrumental which sounds very Blaxplo' to me - excellent 'Chase' style grooves with bags of percussion and darting strings / brass etc - bit marked-up so priced right down - a goodie... ) 7060 - scan/soundfile Larry Davis and the Marvels 'The Magic Is Gone' (Decca / USA / 1960s / VG-) £15 ( Sadly for both you and I, this is not clean - has had a zillion plays and looks like it too - but - believe me when I tell you that it plays a whole grade better @ Ex - sure - there's some crackle but it's loud and clear otherwise....quality Northern from the Stafford days... ) Leroy Liddell and the Gospel True Singers 'What Shall I Do Lord pts 1 & 2' (Designer / USA / 1971 / M-) £12 ( Pt one is driving Rn'B-infused Gospel soul, flip is a downtempo head nodding Deep Gospel Groover. ) 7065 - scan/soundfile Mr. Bloe 'Groovin With Mr. Bloe' / 'Sinful' (DJM / UK / 1970 / VG) £3 ( Elton John's finest hour? ) Laurel Aitken 'Mr. Lee' / 'Birmingham Girl' (Doctor Bird / UK /1968 / VG-) £8 ( Thank fcuk these UK 45s were heavily-pressed cos this one looks awful but actually plays well - sure - it's crunchy but we know that some of these JA 45s have had a hard life, right? Both sides were played on the NYC club scene in the late-70s and these 2 tracks were actually remixed to 12" by Walter Gibbons - they've remained elusive ever since...a genuinely rare UK 7"... ) Fu' King' Fu' King pts 1 & 2' (EMI / France / 1975 / Ex/Ex+) £50 ( Ya all know that I love a bit of Cosmic Disco but I never knew that the 'Gentle Genius' Curtis Mayfield had jumped on the bandwagon back in '75 too..?! Only kidding...the reason I mention Curtis is cos the backing track here is an absolute RINGER for 'Give Me Your Love' - believe me - and it don't end there, just gets better and better - builds and builds with some ace ARP splashes, twisted strings, echo-ed up percussion - OMG - this is SO special - check the soundfile - the sleeve is absolute guff and you'd pass it by in a flash but you'd be making a BIG mistake...TUNE TUNE TUNE... ) 7074 - scan/soundfile Screamin' Jay Hawkins and the Chicken Hawks 'I Hear Voices' / 'Just Don't Care' (Enrica / USA / 1965 / M-) £10 ( My Gad - this guy's voice is absolutely and totally unique...he's totally unmistakable...both sides here are excellent R&B and delivered in his inimitable and absolutely unmissable style...not for the faint-hearted....unplayed copy here too...this was also issued on an extremely rare Sue UK 7"... ) Roy Hamilton 'You Wanted To Change Me' / 'Forgive This Fool' (Epic / USA / 1960s / Ex) £5 ( Two great sides from golden-voiced Roy (apparently he was one of Elvis's favourite-ever vocalists) - top side is mid-paced R&B / early soul with a lovely kick while flip is a sweet slowie...few scuffs but still a good player - original black/yellow label press... ) Mike Chung and the Now Generation 'Breezing' / 'Version' (Gay Feet / Jamaica / 1970s / Ex) £20 ( Sublime JA Soul/Funk version of the Bobby Womack penned classic. I'm doing really well selling Latin 45s nowadays BUT they are just getting SO hard to pick up...I believe this one to be very, very scarce - but - sadly - it's a long way from M- so it's priced right down for £100...lotsa marks/ scuffs etc etc but plays very well with a certain amount of background noise but NO clips / pops etc etc...both sides absolutely rocking Boogaloo / Latin Soul from NYC... ) S.S.O 'Tonight's The Night (Do What You Wanna Do)' / 'All You Funky People' (Gull / UK / 1976 / M-) £5 ( Never knew this had been released in the UK? And it's a demo too - two great sides from their always-indemand LP - it's the El Chicles boys again - Roland Kluger, John Sluszny etc and in 'Disco Mode' here for some heavy production touches with big clavs, soaring strings and a bassline that would melt granite - both sides absolutely fantastic...immaculate condition... ) Fabulous Five Inc. 'Irie Festival' (Harry J / UK / 1974 / Ex) £10 ( Gonna cut straight to the chase here and big up the flip - the topside is okay here but is too 'Trinidadian' for me - the flip strips the tune back to it's component parts and swings much better cos of dat - believe - first black/white UK Harry J 45 I've ever had / seen - exquisite shape...baaad little lick... ) 7089 - scan/soundfile Lloyd Terrell 'Let's Get It On' / 'Version' (Harry J / UK / 1974 / Ex) £15 ( Superior JA-Soul version of this Marvin Gaye classic - so, so good...gorgeous copy... ) 7090 - scan/soundfile Soul Messengers 'Do It (Until You're Satisfied)' / 'Collie Dub' (Horse / UK / 1974 / Ex) £30 ( Massively indemand JA Funky / Reggae version of the BT Express cut - off-the-radar and the Dub goes even further out....beautiful copy... ) Viceroy 'Chucky' / 'Chucky Version' (Hot Shot / Jamaica / 1970s / M-) £8 ( Stamped demo copy of this rare Sufferers tune - flip is off-the-clock... ) The Landslides 'Music, Please Music' / 'We Don't Need No Music' (Huff Puff / USA / 1960s / M-) £5 ( Rare Philly Funky-Soul from Philly c/o Gamble & Huff - raucous Funk instru-mental/s - beautiful copy...one side vocal / one side instrumental.. ) 7096 - scan/soundfile Chris Farlowe 'Everyone Makes A Mistake' (Immediate / UK / 1967 / VG+) £5 ( Some scuffs / marks on this but a very good player - one of Chris's best for me - bongo-led club cut and CF's voice sounds amazing here... ) The Blue Rhythm Combo 'Get Down' / 'Rhythm Man' (Island Series / Canada / 1970s / VG) £20 ( Bit scruffy-looking so priced right down - rare Islands Funk on a WD copy...plays above grade but with some background crackle...... ) Derrick Morgan 'Festival 10' / 'Version' (Jackpot / Jamaica /1970s / M-) £5 ( Incredibly clean WD copy of this sublime Bunny Lee production - totally exquisite...heavy version on the flip... The Masonic Travelers 'Take The Lord With You' (Jewel / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £15 ( First WD on this label I've ever had..?
