Please forgive me for keeping bumping this thread, but we need to try and make it as high profile as possible, we really need to try and save this club, as you can see from the thread on here the Greatstone club has been lost to the Soul community. Even if the Wheel is not your choice of music, please help the campaign as we are all into Soul music and the Wheels contribution to the Soul scene then and now should not be ignored nor lost forever. Think of colleagues you can e-mail this link to, https://www.change.or...gends-nightclub it will take seconds to sign, yours and your friends contribution will be invaluable in the fight to keep this historic club open. So come on one and all, Please  send that link to every Soulie in your address book, as I have said it will only take seconds to send the link and seconds to sign. It will go straight to Manchester City Council and they will be forced to Listen......

My apologies, I was trying to make the point another event had gone

The campaign to save the club is moving but slowly, sadly too slowly in my opinion. To save this club will be a massive battle and will only be won by public support.

The joint Legends/Wheel campaign has 2,415 signatures as I write, simply not enough. The separate campaign petitioning the 13 people who should be on the planning committee is not quantifiable but I would guess would be in the hundreds at best.

The best way to get support is from the Soul community, and in my opinion radio shows are a massive outlet as most soulies are avid listeners of Soul radio stations.

So to simplify things, as we can only presume we are making things to complex (i.e try reading this out or remembering it as most people don't have a pen handy when listening to their chosen show https://www.change.org/petitions/manchester-city-council-save-legends-nightclub frankly impossible) try putting this web site to your favourite show, it can be easily remembered mancunianmatters.co.uk, if listeners then simply type in Twisted Wheel on that sites search facility it will take them to a page on the Wheels plight, with a link on the bottom to the Legends/Wheel campaign which they can sign.

If we are to have a hope of saving this Historic club we all need to do more, I can't see the point of joining this thread if you are not prepared to help, so come on all on here, get onto your local radio show and just ask them to read out the mancunianmaters link, if they don't then ask them again. To send a simple e-mail will take minutes surely not a lot to ask so please help. Also please consider sending everyone in your address book the legends link, cut and paste https://www.change.org/petitions/manchester-city-council-save-legends-nightclub send..... job done :thumbsup:......

Sorry to jump in late, but mirroring the 100 club the year before last has anyone contacted any of the high profile names that played the TW, I'm thinking John Mayall, Spencer Davis. It helped the 100 club, unfortunately the TW is no longer a live music venue, any future interest should look at that.

It helped the 100 club, unfortunately the TW is no longer a live music venue, any future interest should look at that.

Some people on FB are trying to contact artists who have performed there in the past and any other celebrities who may put their weight behind the campaign. Chris Farlow (who has sung live @ the Wheel in 2010 and 2011) is in the FB group.

Pete has approached in the past many artists who performed at the club with a limited response, in fact Spencer Davies was very dismissive of the Wheel saying it's too far in the past for me to even remember so don't think he will offer much help......

I have just been speaking to Pete on the phone, there is some confusion going around with regards to a planning meeting on March 15th. This is not true at least up to yet, at this moment in time the Olympian group have submitted no plans for approval, they still have their architects around the club making plans. When they do put in their plans they will have to follow procedure like anyone else i.e notices in local papers, on lamposts etc. So there is still plenty of time for the campaign.

Pete has done an interview along with Barry Tasker, Albert Heron and others he put forward about the club and it's plight for the independent newspaper, which will be published soon. He is just hopeful they print what he wants to further the campaign and it is better represented than the TV interview he did recently, though this did have a great effect of getting the Wheels plight in the public eye.

Pete thanks everyone for their efforts and like he said we just have to keep going and do what we all can to keep that fantastic club open.

Pete Roberts has had Chris Farlow on his radio show tonight in the second hour. Chris is fully supporting the campaign as you would expect of a fantastic professional such as himself. For anyone interested who missed the show it can be accessed on the listen again facility https://www.northmanchesterfm.org/

Nice work. Berni all we can do is keep petitioning sending emails to the planning committee and trying to get some heavy weight Celebs onside

Keep on keepin on

Hi Spike, it's not Bernard it's Mike, thanks for your comments.

One thing of note, I have it from 2 official sources that the lobbying of the planning committee is essential BUT should not start until planning application has been applied for (which makes sense rally as they may not be on the committee as and when Olympian apply,or they will have probably forgotten about objections sent 2,3 or even 4 months before the committee sit to consider that application) it should then be structured and personally written to have the most effect, not downloaded and the same message sent by everyone. So from that angle we really need to wait for Olympian to apply.

See you Sunday Mate :D ......

Hi to all interested. An idea has been put forward (by Irish)....., what about all the people who may be interested who do not have a computer, or don't use forums?

So to address this a paper petition titled "Save Legends the home of the twisted Wheel" has been done. What we are hoping is that when people go to their local Soul events or the likes, where we know we can get support they will take with them the petition document (hopefully loads of them) and put them on the door for people who have not signed on line petitions to sign and put their weight behind the campaign.

If anyone is interested please p.m myself or Irish with your e-mail address and we will send you the document in an attached file to print and then photo copy.

Regards

Mike.....

On behalf of The Twisted Wheel club, Manchester...

Some good news for Twisted Wheel supporters and hard working campaigner's, an application for listing was submitted to English Heritage, today we received the good news that the application has been validated and an initial assessment for designation for listing will take place. This is to assess the applications content in meeting the criteria necessary for English Heritage to put forward the application for listing to the DCMS, The Under Secretary of State for Tourism & Heritage for approval to list The Twisted Wheel.

Please note, this process could take up to 6 months from the time of application to the final decision on listing. This one element of our campaign is now in the hands of English Heritage but there are many more fronts we can and will continue with to save The Twisted Wheel

Played there about 1966. Back-up to Gladys Knight & The Pips.

Are you sure you have the right venue for Gladys Knight & The Pips .If you have any pics of Soul bands or singers you have backed up, taken in the 60s/70s please post them as it would be great to see them.

Please support the Save The Twisted Wheel Campaign by objecting to the proposed planning application to demolish

The Twisted Wheel and replace it with a 330 room hotel. The Twisted Wheel is one of the mile stones of our musical heritage in the U.K, so please, let's try and keep it that way. Please give your support to this campaign.

1. Register and post a public comment on the Public Access site, objecting to the demolition plans for the Wheelhttps://pa.manchester.gov.uk/online-a...pe=Application

2. Compose a "letter of objection" to Motel Ones plans and send it to Manchester City Councils Case Officer (John Kelsey) for the planning application, his e-mail address is j.kelsey@manchester.gov.uk

3. Send a "letter of objection" to all these councillors listed below. They are the councillors who will sit at the planning meeting (penciled in for the 28th June). If you have previously e-mailed any of them just copy them in anyway to remind them.

Thank you for your email, as requested please find enclosed the Members of the Planning and Highways Committee email address's.

C,mon get a grip whats so sad its only a crappy old building  The Twised wheel closed in the early seventies and no amount of calling it the Wheel alters that fact .

People have had thirty odd years to come up with an appropriate way of marking the huge impact the club had and have failed to do so .

But I suppose the greatest legacy the Wheel has left is the enduring soul scene and that is more important than mourning the demise of some bricks and mortar .

Not been for years so decided to call in on The Wheel a couple of Months ago.Its time to let go and leave the old lady to pass away in peace. Clinging to a memory that has long gone. The Wheel led the way for others to then carry the Flag such as The Torch, The Casino etc. Its not The Wheel any more, its an old semi derilict building that is in desperate need of either restoration or the wrecking ball.Let us bow our heads and remember .....

if people still enjoy the wheel then let them instead of all the usual slagging off and negative comments that people are so quick to post on here

and that goes about anything and not just comments about the wheel in my opinion the wheel is still a great place to visit. and frequent= no politics no misery guts, just people having a great time like they should be. every time i go to the wheel the atmosphere is fantastic music is bril and the crowd very happy.

I went to an allnighter at the Wheel last year (1st one I'd been to there for about 41 years) and had a great time.

If we can't save the Wheel building then why don't we just shut all the industrial museums, wreck all the old water / wind mills, blow up all the old canal aquaducts and rip up all the preserved railways.

After all; they're only for people 'living in the past' (while we're at it, may as well melt down all the old 45's, coz now you can get all the tracks digitally).

I am not slagging off Mickey.

When my Dad died he was a shadow of the Man I grew up with and looked up to and seeing him in that condition is my last memory of him. A once powerful man ravaged by a terrible desease and left him a shell. The Wheel, the building, is but a shell and deteriorated to a state where it looks like a squat. If it closes tomorrow it will be my final memorie of a once great club. The Music will live on in our hearts and we share the memories with our friends. I'm not dissing the Music, The Atmosphere, The Punters etc I just dont want to see it fade away and leave a sad picture behind.

Love and respect to all the guys and girls that are keeping it alive but the Life Support Machines batteries are waning and the light is only kept glowing through the good intentions of honest people like yourself.

If it can be saved and 'restored' hurrah, but if it is to go then so be it.

I suppose I should really take heed and rethink my stratogies. Join the masses and save her - perhaps !!

in this thread people have posted a wide varied range of views, offering support, advice, various views etc

just cause some members views may not be the same as yours or others it doesn't automatically give you the right to start knocking the people making them

you are just doing exactly what you are moaning about

idea is that we talk about the actual subject not the people talking about it

so ask can we drop this bitching and get back to the original subject

The Whole point is no one has come on here and asked for a debate, there is nothing to debate, just the Wheel to support, and like the Wheel or not without it the soul scene would be a very different one to it is now......

I hate Modern Soul with a passion, but if anyone asked me to sign a petition to try and help keep a modern soul club going I would do so without hesitation, and do it gladly as we as soul lovers are supposed to be one big family. It is a sad fact on here the Wheel for some reason is often critisized, and the campaign to try and keep the Wheel at 6 Whitworth st. was very poorly supported by most here, hence the campaign was took to Face Book where it is much better received and supported, a sad reflection in my opinion, but hey it's a free world......

As for refurbishing the Wheel never, the whole attraction of the Wheel is, it IS the Only club in it's original venue, dark, damp, sweaty and seedy, just how it should be, just how it was, that's why I went, along with so many others, to see what it was like back in the day and i'm so glad I did...... The Wheel in a posh, large open well light venue Never!!!!! that wouldn't be the Wheel.......

So please all on here support the Wheel, follow Irish's post and register your objection to it's proposed demolition. If only in support of your fellow soulies, or to show respect to the Wheel as the place where it all began, and we owe so much for the pleasure and memories we have had on the soul scene.......

have just checked the flyer for this weekends twisted wheel event - nothing about the campaign

just checked the event guide entry - nothing

just checked the connected event web site - nothing

suggest rather than wasting time and alienating people by posting digs at site and its members you may be better off trying to address such glaring failures to try and get over your message better

I apologise if my comment has come across as a dig at this site, that was far from my intention as the administration of the site have been most helpful to which we are very grateful. The reason I commented about a lack of a response is, I contacted one of the administrators and he very kindly put up the post for the on-line petition at the top of the News section a few months ago. We were hoping and expecting the rate of people signing the Joint on-line petition would increase remarkably, sadly it did not, it continued at the same trickle, in fact there are still only 2,994 signatures on that petition to date.

We also tried to cater for people who would be prepared to take a paper petition to local soul events they attend, to catch peoples signatures who are not on line, so a post was put on here by myself asking anyone to contact us by p.m and we would send them a down load of that petition. We did not receive one request. Those were my reasons saying there was little interest shown on here, and i'm also sure you will agree with me when people are saying (though I'm sure they did not mean it to offend in this case) that the soul club you love should be demolished it is not well received by it's patrons.

Gerry (Irish) decided to give it another try as surely there must be some on here who enjoy or would be prepared to try and help save the wheel at Whitworth st. and give up a little time to object to the parties mentioned regards the proposed demolition of the Wheel, and he did so with the best intentions, lets hope some will respond this time.

Could I also be a little cheeky and ask if once again you would consider putting Irish's post on the news page to try and help the campaign.

Regards

Mike.

personally i feel you are expecting too much from here

you have made the announcement, have made people aware and on sites like there is not a lot more that can do imo on that side after the intial rush

would suggest that now you should just post every now and again just to inform people of the latest campaign news, plans, developments etc

and do it in a way that comes over well

you do mention poor response so far which does sort of say that its not going as well as you hope

myself would suggest that you step back for a day or two and have a good long hard think about how you are doing things on here and elsewhere

was surprised to see it not mentioned on flyers /websites etc and maybe that is a pointer to areas where things can be improved

and to be blunt yours and others approach on here could be better

there are good helpful people on here who as you can see in earlier posts in this thread above are happy to offer help, advice etc

but you do need to take on board imo that if any campaign is not going well then you should look at the actual campaigning first

all just imo and offered in a helpful spirit and hopefully be taken that way

would rather leave it at that or if feel a need to discuss further mik ethen do it via pm

cheers

By complete default, I have suddenly developed a HUGE interest in the current state of play on this situation. Can anybody bring me up to speed with what's happening right now?

Is the location still for sale and how much is it I guess are the two key questions. Can anyone help?

According to the website Place Northwest, the intention is now to commence work on the site for Motel One in the first quarter of 2013.

Anybody know how to put the link up?

That does not mean that they may try to buy up the remaining leases and clear the site earlier.

Do the leases expire 31st December? It would be great if there was a chance of staying open until the end of January 2013.

January 27th will be 50 years since the official opening of the Brazennose Street Wheel, and January 27 th 2013 will be a Sunday.

The lease holders of the Wheel premises have informed Pete Roberts that their lease expires on 31st December and after that date the club will close prior to being demolished.

In fact, the Wheel closure would have happened irrespective of the planning application outcome.
