Why is NO ONE allowed to just enjoy listening to soul music anymore?

Seems if you do, and don't go to an all-nighter every week (and definitely not an oldies all nighter at that), your the reason for Northern Soul going stale!

It is annoying when people jump on the bandwagon because it's fashionable, but if this great music we love so much is getting brought to new ears, what's wrong with that? The delivery method doesn't matter, and even if only 1 person in a 100 who hear it, stick with it and get more into it, then something positive has happened, surely!

I believe he owns the "Flying Scotsman" IDEA ! (No he doesn't just checked)But he does own at least one train !

How about an allnight special on a train ?

20 carriages with seats removed packed full of people dancing with restaurant cars retained of course :D

You may scoff, but I am (almost) sure that that idea was floated back in the '70s-in fact I could swear I saw it advertised.

Mind, in those days I often saw things that may have not existed.

I'moutragedaphobia - do you think we could actually get that entered in to the Oxford English Dictionary? What a fantastic word!!

Pete Waterman is okay. At least he's a Northerner.

Fair play to the bloke for liking rare soul and even knowing Hoagy Lands.

Same sort of view with Peter Stringfellow. Not everyone's cuppa, but a low grade Sheffield soul ledge and for those reasons, he can do no wrong in my book.

Radio 2 next week

On Tuesday 20 December "In Too Darn Soulful: Northern Soul", Smooth Radio presenter Pete Waterman tells the story of Northern Soul and dance. He examines what makes Northern Soul music so all consuming for the devoted fans and introduces the uninitiated to this intoxicating mix of music and dance. And he meets the people for whom Northern Soul is a way of life. A Unique production.

Pete Waterman said: "Northern Soul is such a phenomenon, it's great to be looking at this fascinating insight into the continuing fan base it has. I was the only man who always went to Wigan for his summer holidays - I loved Northern Soul that much! I only got two weeks off from being a DJ back then, and I spent those 14 days just going to Northern Soul Clubs."

i never saw him ! :glare::huh:

Take a chill pill Rich, the poor chap's gotta earn a few quid for his Brum CWs (train spotters special).

What will have happened is that a production company will have been given the brief to do a bit on Northern and will have scanned around for a name with some history in it. We've established that he did a bit of time and actually liked the stuff. He's got more credentials than Stuart Maconie whose only real connection was that he was from Wigan; spurious ain't in it.

Anyway I think I'm on the prog and Elaine's pushing her film on it and also I believe on breakfast TV with said train fancier.

Sorry mate, I am perfectly chilled but after hearing him say that in front of millions I have no respect for the guy whatsoever....Whatever his history, whatever his commercial interests, that was just a moronic comment and also completely untrue.... For me it kind of encapsulated what those shows are really all about, pushing very averagely talented people into the spotlight so that svengali's like him can make money out of them...That's one thing but to actually downgrade the contributions of people with giant talents like MR WILSON is surely a bridge too far....

Hey ADY if you are on it, pull him about that JACKIE WILSON comment then - in the nicest possible diplomatic way of course!..... :hatsoff2:

TED what is that supposed to mean? This year I've been to Bisley, Bishopstoke, Coventry BOS, Worcester All Niter (Which I believe you played at), Blue Lagoon (Portsmouth), Soul in the South All niter Bournemouth, Southampton Soul Club Motown Nite, Crystal Palace Soul, Barcelona Weekender and a number of other events and as in common with the last two years I will hope to be seeing this year out at the VA VA VOOM All-Niter in London (If I was not at that I would be most certainly at the Southampton Soul Club New Year's Bash, where again, I do believe you are the Guest DJ..)....Not as many as I would have been to in the previous year but then again I have been pretty seriously ill with a chronic liver infection which caused me to miss 'Just Soul' and several other events I wanted to attend over the last three months......As such at a loss as to what you're getting at, unless of course we are playing the old 'I've been to more matches than you' game... :hatsoff2:

you got to admit though , he knows what he is saying , with all the popular music he turned out you could just tell it was all NS based .

Yes, you are right, he most certainly did make a lot of money selling crappy pop records that were marketed and presented as something new and original but were really just crass impersonations of the Northern Soul sound he'd once championed...Actually, yes, he's just the type of guy we want speaking then! Makes me laugh, if it was IAN LEVINE speaking this thread would be much fuller of bile and objections.... :D

And PW contiued to still be a regular buyer of Black America soul records during the 80's and 90's at Hott Waxx Records in Warrington. And may I add PW just got on with it quietly and never hide this fact.

I honestly can't see what the fuss is about? Over the years we've had loads of celebs into northern type threads, people from Emmerdale, Corrie etc etc, all seen at the occasional do. Dale Winton, Eric Knowles, Anna Ford all have been associated with northern, and what difference or damage has it made or done to the scene? None whatsoever, it could probably be argued quite successfully that more damage has been done from within. For me, let him have his moment in the 'soul scene sun' he won't have the tan the rest of us have got

I can remember, as can older Soul Sourcers, there used to be a Saturday tea time Soul show on Radio One. Hosted by Dave Symons as I remember.

Anyway, this week young Pete Waterman was a guest on the show as he was a fairly well known dj around the midlands. I can recall him playing the O'Jays "Working on your case" and Dave Symons commenting that PW was doing a tribal war dance around the studio.

My point being that years ago he was no different from any of us. So the guys done well for himself financially but at least he came from the same musical background as we all did!

And on the way to making a fortune perhaps he did sacrifice his musical credibility. (To Soul fans anyway). But he would'nt have done so well having Rick Astley cover Northern favourites would he?

I like the guy.

There is, I think she was working? Anyway I only put up a few examples, there's loads more, but it's never mattered who's associated themselves with northern, it's never made an ounce of difference to the proverbial big picture, it's not changed what anyone knows or anyone thinks. It's just never had any real influence IMO

Wind your neck's in ......................... a column in Blues and Soul, made money through TV, whilst still collected soul records, ran a venue........................So full respect to remaining a private soul collector in the comfort of of his own home.

Don't see Steve Davis or Wayne Hemingway suffering such shit. But then this will fall on deaf ears on here....................because all 3 own a better desired collection of vinyl than other's on here, due to a greater purse, should that including northern or not. I know these folks own vast amount of 70's and 80's rare trophy collectable finds.

And lets not lose sight of the fact that snooker ace Ray Reardon collected and owned a desirable northern collection, which he upgraded regularly. Which later through Steve Davis lead to Barry Hearn to finance record trips and unearth contacts via Voices From The Shadows. :D .

Q magazine February 1997 documents Anna Ford frequenting the Casino as a regular (black and white photo on page 65.) As written by Stuart Maconie who salutes the tribe of Northern Soulies, who kept the faith. But then page 63 a colour photo labels a northern soul venue during the seventies - it was later, it's Stafford. :D .

Hi Nick I'd agree with most of the above except to say there are some pretty strong collections amongst the non millionaire soul fans on here and beyond. But apart from that agree 100% with the sentiment. I think a lot of this tosh is fuelled by jeleousy.

And by the way RICH making a comment on TV - how does that compare to people who crave Paul Anka records every week who are also on here?

Proven record on the rare soul scene, hard grafter, made his own lucky , lucky ,lucky. :hatsoff2:

Taught us all it was more important to Jack than like Fleetwood Mac, & Most importantly had a hand in producing what in my opinion is the definitive version of.... Time will pass you by  OKEH COKEY anyone?

The Anna Ford thing stems from one photo in Russ's book, she was there with work colleagues apparently but when he did an interview with Paul Ross on some late night chat show, he said she was a casino regular. Bit like Mick Hucknall, who Russ also says was a regular, despite Hucknall saying he never went to a Wigan allnighter...

This ties in with my understanding Pete. I heard that her mates at Granada used to go there a bit, basically after the pubs shut, and she tagged along once or twice. Very different to someone like PW who has collected records quietly etc. used to run soul nights and wrote articles.

'And by the way RICH making a comment on TV - how does that compare to people who crave Paul Anka records every week who are also on here?'

I'm not sure how it compares at all mate??....All I know is that if any other TV personality, let's say SIMON COWELL, for arguments sake.... Publicly said in front of around fifteen million people that WILL YOUNG'S version of 'Sweetest Feeling' was superior to JACKIE WILSON'S, everybody on here would - to a man - agree he was an utter twat talking absolute bollocks...If we also knew he was going to be signing that artist, he'd be condemned for exactly what he is....

Seems because PETE WATERMAN has a background on the scene, it's ok for him to make such statements....Well, each to their own perception.... :hatsoff2:
