Radio 2 next week

On Tuesday 20 December "In Too Darn Soulful: Northern Soul", Smooth Radio presenter Pete Waterman tells the story of Northern Soul and dance. He examines what makes Northern Soul music so all consuming for the devoted fans and introduces the uninitiated to this intoxicating mix of music and dance. And he meets the people for whom Northern Soul is a way of life. A Unique production.

Pete Waterman said: "Northern Soul is such a phenomenon, it's great to be looking at this fascinating insight into the continuing fan base it has. I was the only man who always went to Wigan for his summer holidays - I loved Northern Soul that much! I only got two weeks off from being a DJ back then, and I spent those 14 days just going to Northern Soul Clubs."

In the mid eighties I listened to a radio show , where he went on about how much northern had influenced his musical career and played out his top ten , it was practically a run down of casino classics , of which Hoagy Lands was his favourite record

I knew it wouldn't be long before he came out the woodwork, the time is about right for him now that it's bubbled over.

C'mon Pete tell us again about the boots of Breakout that were all pressed off centre that you all bought back then.

My sides are splitting (again) :sleep3:

Don't know what the fuss is about.

He used to write a column (briefly) in B&S in the mid 70s. So he was there. Also seen him on one of them documentaries - not quite right, but I don't doubt his integrity on this issue. Plus I'd love to have his model railway of Leamington Spa or wherever it is :D:

There's a record that I'm sure was a Stock Aitkin Waterman production - had that sound - that I only ever heard once, about 7.30am in (I think) 1988, that samples the "yeah!" and "woooohhh!" from the Chaumonts "I Need Your Love. Naturally it was terrible but it was pretty amusing trying to explain and sing the tune to Mrs G...

Well said Steve. The column you refer to was about Philadelphia soul which he was particulary fond of.

Saw JJ at the Treetops and PW promoted that event.

He also ran a record shop in Coventry.

And his Blues and Soul ads from that era were amusing.

¬ve been told he used to play northern at the Tree Tops club in Coventry but the common tunes ! Did j j barnes appear there too ?

This is the fooking prat who announced after WILL YOUNG had finished his very average 'live' version of 'I get the sweetest feeling' on Pop Idol...'that was better than Jackie Wilson'.....One of the most disgraceful comments ever uttered on a British entertainment show...Not only was it complete bullshit, YOUNG came nowhere near the fantastic vocal range WILSON exhibits on said record, but it was a comment linked intimately with the fact WATERMAN was going to be involved in YOUNG'S record deal if he won....

Yes, I do remember his BLUES AND SOUL ads too and he did used to DJ in Coventry...Makes no difference to me, he is doing this as an exercise to promote PETE WATERMAN and his supposed musical credibility....

Which as far as Northern Soul is concerned he sacrificed on the altar of greed and commercial gain, when he insulted the memory and talent of one of our greatest ever musical heroes (the greatest in mine and a lot of people's books) in front of millions of TV watchers....

Me and TED MASSEY finally in total agreement....He has no right to comment on NS at all..... :hatsoff2:

Take a chill pill Rich, the poor chap's gotta earn a few quid for his Brum CWs (train spotters special).

What will have happened is that a production company will have been given the brief to do a bit on Northern and will have scanned around for a name with some history in it. We've established that he did a bit of time and actually liked the stuff. He's got more credentials than Stuart Maconie whose only real connection was that he was from Wigan; spurious ain't in it.

Anyway I think I'm on the prog and Elaine's pushing her film on it and also I believe on breakfast TV with said train fancier.

Re the Jackie Wilson comment, I'd dismiss it as heat of the moment live TV stuff. At least Pete knew who recorded the song. That Louis Walsh chap struggles with even Shalamar top 10 hits and Tulisa has never heard of Aretha Franklin songs when sung by the girl from Manchester (Micha B?).

He doesn't try to muscle in on the scene as far as I am aware and isn't opening a soul night near you, so if he likes the music but gets it wrong sometimes, that's ok by me.

And Ady his railway stuff is 'top notch' :D:

Good grief the bloke likes northern live with it!

Half the time we moan the scene doesn't get any exposure and when it does you slag it off, suppose it spoils the exclusivity of it all for some .You don't have to listen.

Just thought some may be interested that's all

thats fine and I'm sure many will find the feature of interest, others will be concerned about his lack of crediblity, how this reflects the scene, and oh pete's general cnutballysness.

Pete Waterman was previously best known for discovering Robert Knight's Love On A Mountain Top which was then subsequently reissued and made the top 20. Obviously that was back in 1973.

Am sure everybody is jumping the gun, regardless of what PW pulls out the box, all past plays from the Soul Scene are and have been winners.

I don't think he can lose, can he?

When he did his book years ago, I had a quick shifty through it in WHSmiths cos I knew he dabbled but I didn't read hee haw about the scene in it, just Carp, Hit Man & Her and Trains
