Soul Celebs Spotted In The Strangest Of Places

Has anyone spotted Tommy Hunt is Tescos?

i think it would be interesting and funny to hear any stories similar to this.

I will start with a funny story regarding my mate Paul from Sheffield.

Paul lives in a flat on the third and top floor of a complex near the city centre of Sheffield. Three doors down from Paul lives an older black guy who would often say hello and chat with Paul. This guy told Paul he was from Detroit and moved to Sheffield in the late 60s. Paul was impressed by this and began to talk about soul music etc. This guy showed interest so over the space of a few years, Paul would pass on cd's and books much to the approval of his neighbour.

Then a few months ago at the Greatstone, Paul and i was sat in a corner reading the 'Soul Up North' fanzine. Paul turns the page and looks shocked to say the least that is neighbour is the main feature.

'Bloody hell!, its Richard!.....what is he doing in here??!!'

After further reading, Paul discovers his neighbour of all these years was Ritchie Pitts, lead singer of the Velours!

Why on earth Ritchie never said anything to Paul escapes me but it does add to the charm of the man in my opinion.

Paul is a huge soul fan and hasn't missed many weekends since starting in the early 80s. He was and still is a little embarrased by this story so i hope he isn't reading :wicked::(

Anymore stories out there?

he used to live in polesworth, a pit village outside tamworth, staffs, baz. i went to his castle (literally, though admittedly only a small one) years ago and he proudly showed me the view from his battlements. i think i'm right in saying edwin had bought some sort of title with it.

i once stood behind martha reeves in the buffet car on a train to gatwick. she bought a chocolate muffin and a bag of cheese and onion.

at least, i think it was her.

My mate Smithy when at Prestatyn a couple of years back, bumped into Baby Washington (who was performing at the weekender) in the camp shop, she was trying to buy some items with vouchers, but didn't have enough, so Mr Smith duly helped out..................by assisting the manager of the store to help remove Ms Washington.. :wicked: ...(Just made that last part up.)...............

Ordinarily I would have to agree but on this occasion, really, it was the horse. It stunk like nothing I had smelled in my entire life and to boot hit lifted it bloody tail to ensure I caught the whole waft!

Alan Darker, once of Lincoln /Sheffield now living in the Manchester area was late for a book signing in Manchester. He went in a Taxi, got to Waterstones, open the door very quickly and knocked a guy flat on his back, he went to say sorry and pick the guy up only to discover that it was-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUHAMED ALI, honest its true--so that leads to the next question "Who are the only 2 English guys to knock Ali over ? "

I saw Will Downing walking through the Pentagaon shopping centre, Chatham about 17 years ago. I went up and said hello. Will was friendly enough but he was being chaperoned by a local Radio Kent DJ who was rushing him off somewhere. I wouldn't mind but I was the only bugger that recognised him!

I was stood listening to some records in Beatin Rythym about 3 weeks back and Grand master Flash was on the next deck, playing Sly and the Family Stone records, he was on at Sankeys that night.

I was sat outside Mcdonald's in Tamworth havin' a burger with my girlfriend when Edwin Starr walked past me. I did a double take then ran over to his big black Merc with the reg ST44R. I knocked on his window and spluttered, "Edwin, hang on a minute, I've summert to show you!" He musta thought I was a nutter as I ran off to my car. I'd written an article about him in a music paper I used to publish and wanted him to look at it.

When I got back to him he was stood outside his car waiting. He asked if he could have a couple of copies of the paper, gave me his home phone number and told us to pop into his for a cuppa next time we were down Tamworth, plus he put our name on the door to see him the next week at the Gala in Wigan. We took up his invitation to see him at Wigan where he instantly recognised us and introduced us to his personal assistant who became a good source for ongoing articles for my paper.

Top man if ever there was one.

RIP Edwin

Its a quote from a Roman satarist, best translation is 'who shall watch the watchman?' loosely translated these days to 'who shall police the soul police?'

Just a light hearted remark

I know it still isn't soulful, but I was on a flight to Majorca and Kenny Lynch was going to a pro celeb golf competition.

not a bad one that. i could push it even further....i met Bill Clinton on a flight and the only soul relevance i have there is that he can play the sax :lol:

i am surprised we haven't had many more stories to be honest.

must be some more?

I was in a Record Show in Toledo about 6 Years ago, buying some toons off a Black geezer, who was from Columbus, Ohio and start talking about Columbus Soul, and chatted about the Chandlers, Jeff Smith, Vondors, Bill Moss etc. When we asked about the Royal Esquires, he says "How the F*** do you know them, that was my group!!" I don't know who was more stunned, him or us. We met him and some of his fellow Royal Esquires over the next few days, even treated to an accapella version of the tune.
