The thing is Russ, not many DJs can actually play 'across the board' successfully, and by that I mean getting the right records in the right order irregardless of genre or when it was recorded. I'll make you blush now, and say that you are one of the few who I rate at doing this, but I've gone into print saying that before anyway. The problem comes when the DJ plays tracks that don't 'fit' together, and the set is just disjointed and a bit of a mess.

What does make me smile though is when a venue has two rooms, Northern & Modern, and then book a DJ for the Northern room who then proceeds to play Modern, and I'm told that I have to accept this. Can you imagine the outcry in the Modern room if a Sixties only DJ did an hour in there :D

Kind words David, thank you, I do put a lot of effort into my sets & to think that some one such as yourself appreciates that effort, even tho' I know you might not enjoy every record is very rewarding.

And I agree with your comments with the two rooms too mate.

Russ

karen_bridges03.gif point taken... I must say though, for me, it's really based on a track by track basis. However, the majority of sounds I like are 60's :D

Soulgirl,

Are you married? Cos if not I'd like to propose. I've agreed with all your comments and you are definately my kind of girl. I tell everyone that I'm not into modern. But as you said, there are a handfull of 70s records that are superb. Problem is they are dog rare and worth four figures, and the only DJs that have them all and can therefore do a good spot, are the Butch's, Mick H's, Soul Sams etc.

What I'm saying is, that in my humble opinion, there aren't enough quality 70s tracks to make it worth while. I've gone to venues for years now, trying to find somewhere that plays quality, rare upfront 60s soul, from start to finnish. If I'm going to get sweaty dancing, then I don't want to be stood about shivering, waiting for another record that moves me. I've still not found one, though the Lifeline allnighters were by far the best.

I was going to jack it in, disallusioned. But I've started my own night, and have a strict music policy. No spots for favours here. Only DJs that have the records, and that are ENTHUSIASTIC! and that actually dance to the music.

Across the board music policy is ok, if you can get Butch to be a resident. I go out to hear music that makes me want to dance. You can listen to what you like at home, but don't expect me to spend my money and time listening to it.

Nobody is ever going to agree. I wouldn't go anywhere that played modern or crossover or 70's/80's whatever because it isn't Northern Soul in my opinion but it obviously is in other people's opinions. Why, I have no idea. I want to hear midtempo and uptempo 60's soul music. End of. And what really does my head in is when people tell me to "open my ears" and stop being a dinosaur...why? I don't expect to hear punk music or country when I go to a northern do so why should I have to listen to stuff that isn't Northern Soul?

Pete,

Bang on mate! Never understood how some of the music that is, and has been played could ever be called "Northern".

I'm with you. Can't stand being at a venue and a 70s/80s track comes on and fills the dance floor. What are these people doing at a Northern Soul do?

Give me a playlist then Brett... say five or 10, and I'll let you have my verdictkaren_bridges13.gif

Pay your shilling and attend a venue that promotes 70's/crossover....

anyhow your a self confessed 60's girl...why would it interest you.

Plus you also state you listen via CD...so the price is then irrelevant

Quite right Brian, and they don't even wear Spencers and 3 star jumpers when they're dancing to these new fangled sounding records.

Keep The Faith.
