Guest southpaw Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Orderd the "they call it crossover" some good tracks on this one
Scotters Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Blimey, what a bargain! Been listening to "I get my Groove (Crossover soul from the Deep South)" this last few months and great to see some more well though through comps being released. I love trying to track down original 45's I like the sound of, and for me personally these comps are great way to discover yet more great soul to try and hunt down when funds allow. My only gripe is the post-Christmas release date ...oh, and that these CD's will no doubt double my "wants list" . All the best, Steve

My only gripe is the post-Christmas release date ...oh, and that these CD's will no doubt double my "wants list" . All the best, Steve Great stuff Steve. These comps are designed to do just that and hopefully revive interest in a lot of stuff which would normally stall sales-wise at a higher price. The first 20 volumes have now collectively sold over 80K units which justifies the strategy thank God. Incidentaly, the reason for the Boxing Day release, is because this will pretty much coincide with the annual HMV new year sale and the price point of Backbeats means that we can get the third series into every HMV in the country in the 2 for £10 sale, which is obviously a big help sales wise. So if you're not a fan of online ordering, you can pop down to your local HMV from Boxing Day onwards and pick 'em up for a fiver a pop. I'm currently working on expanding the series and introducing a Backbeats Artists series at the same price which will make a lot of different artists repertoire available to new and wider audiences touch wood and hopefully prod people into digging deeper for more! They were really designed to be great budget-price samplers, but the series is really nearer to a good quality mid-price release IMO. Onwards and upwards! Ian D 1
Ian Dewhirst Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 these look great! I'm gonna send you some Kris as promised for bailing me out on a few tunes! Better get that deck fixed for the next lot ay? Ian D
Kris Holmes Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I'm gonna send you some Kris as promised for bailing me out on a few tunes! Better get that deck fixed for the next lot ay? Ian D Cheers, it's actually sorted now, I found a USB interface thing at work which came free with one of the mixers a few years back & has just been languishing boxed up in a cupboard the whole time, brought it home, plugged it in & it is now stereo & the hum is all but gone. Like I said, I never really needed higher quality, but it's there now for whenever

Ian D Some great stuff there Ian - I'm just pre-ordering from amazon now. Minor point but why the anomaly on the Crossover Cd - £3.99 and later release data? Is Hampsey slacking again? Mike
Ian Dewhirst Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 Some great stuff there Ian - I'm just pre-ordering from amazon now. Minor point but why the anomaly on the Crossover Cd - £3.99 and later release data? Is Hampsey slacking again? Mike Hi Mike, It's the bane of our lives getting Amazon to list everything correctly. I've had to re-send tracklistings for the entire series (all 30 albums) and get them to re-up them all, but it's a frustrating process and it often takes a week to 10 days for them to update. Half the problem is that everybody wants stuff waaaay ahead and then when we hit the usual licensing complications or something has to be bumped off, then the whole system needs reloading again! Same thing with the prices, which only Amazon can set. They should all be 100% uniform. We're actually trying to sort it as we speak..... suffice to say the release dates for all of them are being changed to the correct one of 26/12/11 touch wood. Now let's hope there's no cock-ups with the manufacturing! Ian D

Mike Actually it kills me to say it, but Hampsey is by far the most together out of the lot of us. Quite freaky actually but there again that's what happens when you spend your life listening to wrist-slashers! Ian D
Guest Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 suffice to say the release dates for all of them are being changed to the correct one of 26/12/11 touch wood. Interesting release date choice, Ian. In days gone by, pre-MP3 times, releasing any piece of product around December was a certain kiss of death with the sell-in...no chance of rack-space amongst the deluge of Christmas titles and sale/special purchase stock. Have the times now changed to allow such a date...are they aimed at the many, many folk that will be off over that week and have nothing better to do whilst the kids trash their gifts!? Generally curious as I have been out of the game for a few years now.
Ian Dewhirst Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 Interesting release date choice, Ian. It's all down to those all-important HMV and Amazon pre-orders these days Dave. They're what cover the costs of the series in this day and age. By the time the indies and exports come in, then theoretically we should be ahead. Because HMV's sales are virtually always cash cows at this time of year, I deliberately priced the series so it would fit in their 2 for £10 racks around sale time. That's what happened with Series' 1 & 2 and they sold through OK (although I wish they'd rack 'em near the Specialist/Soul/RnB sections this time). But times have changed mate. If you can pre-sell 1K of anything in the UK these days, then you're doing well. There's only so many places to sell to with a series like this 'cos the supermarkets aren't interested in 'specialist' or deep catalogue. Because of the nature of the series (and especially the price), they tend to sell well over time, so most of 'em will do 3-5K in the UK and and another 4-5K on export over the 3 year term touch wood. This is like having a normal release do 5K which I'll take any day of the week LOL. It's tough out there and the vultures are hovering. If I can get another 30 out in the next 15 months, then that'll be 60 of 'em out there as a nice thankyou to everyone who's supported the series. By the time we're finished it'll be a cute and very cost effective way of having a decent CD collection as backup for the OVO! You're not missing anything though. If you thought Sound & Media was a slog, that was like a holiday compared to now! Best move you could have made emigrating. Trust you to go to a place that's jam packed with great records ay? Ian D

Guest Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 It's all down to those all-important HMV and Amazon pre-orders these days Dave. Thanks for the detailed reply...an insight for us all on how the trade flow currently is. HMV and Amazon running the show without the supermarket support, amazing. How long do you think HMV can hold out, or has the downsizing already begun...they shut 363 Oxford Street (or whatever number it was when it moved across the street!?) down, right? Still, it seems that your passion for the product coupled with excellent packaging and sensible price-pointing will see you through. Keep up the good work...and how about some more YouTube interviews, eh!? Always happy to recommend your titles to the main stores over here...I'm quite a regular customer in the specialist shops, oddly enough!
Geoff Whitfield Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Cracking stuff there Ian. when will they be available to indies? I do hope you have not given them on consignment to HMV Ian? Hearing a lot of rumours about how long they will be around, and believe it or not they may be our competitors but I want them to survive or most places will have no where to buy physical product thus pushinh more and more people to the internet.
Theresa Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Three Pounds Sixty including postage i'll have some of those! the last 2 Sean Hampsey compiled cds have had a battering since i bought them his new 2 looks as though they will get the same treatment. Keep up the good work Ian. Ditto, the whole series to date has been hammered in the Price Family Bus, particularly the Hampsey ones which are mighty fine. Really looking forward to these new ones - Ian are there any *ahem* 'review' copies for impoverished Surrey housewives? Hee hee. Promise I'll buy some as well as Chrissy pressies for the Sarf Larndon Massive. Actually it kills me to say it, but Hampsey is by far the most together out of the lot of us That's cos he's a Capricorn They make lots of lists.
Guest VepT5 Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 That's the plan Heath. By the way, if you're Heath Denton I owe you a few for mastering services don't I? Ian D If you're twisting my arm, then how could I refuse

Everyone should watch out for when I post up the FANTASTIC Kenny Gamble interview with Richard Searling and Ralph Tee. Richard brought original copies of all the early (ie pre Philly International) Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff associated records from the 60's including a whole heap of immaculate UK copies of the Sapphires, Doris Troy, Sheila Ferguson, Formations etc, etc many of which Kenny was seeing for the first time in his life and some of which he couldn't even remember! He listened to Doris Troy's "I'll Do Anything" and said it was like a Motown copy but couldn't remember recording it at all! We're in editing phase at the moment, so the clips should go up in the first week of January touch wood for the launch of the Philly 40 campaign. Will post up here as soon as it's ready! Ian Dewhirst Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Cracking stuff there Ian. when will they be available to indies? I do hope you have not given them on consignment to HMV Ian? Hearing a lot of rumours about how long they will be around, and believe it or not they may be our competitors but I want them to survive or most places will have no where to buy physical product thus pushinh more and more people to the internet. Hi Geoff, Long time no speak. Hope you are well and all is good. Available to everyone from Boxing Day! HMV have committed to include them within the Boxing Day sale and they will all be in the 2 for £10 sections at the front of the stores. However, this time there's no exclusive and the whole of series 3 will be available everywhere and to everyone. Indies should order through Proper but get in quick as we'll have to up their main order based on the volume of pre-orders we're receiving from the indies. All looking good mate! HMV are in the process of 'diversifying their offering' which means that in-store space for music will no doubt reduce and space for technology, games, magazines, i-pads, dildoes etc, etc will increase. I think they'll be trying to re-brand themselves as a 'lifestyle entertainment destination, or something along those lines. What will now happen now, is that the grand majority of people who still buy CD's, will probably get the mainstream and chart stuff from HMV and/or the supermarkets and what we call the 'deep catalogue' people will need to go to well-stocked indie stores (who will carry a huge range of back catalogue) to get their fix. It could the beginning of a rebirth for dedicated indie stores since there will be no competition from anywhere else (apart from online which is another question entirely). I see potential for every town having an indie record/cd/book type store maybe with a coffee bar and even listening booths 'cos there won't be many other places where music lovers can congregate and keep up with what's new. Mmm. That'd be like an old time record shop then.............. Ian D 1
Daryl Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Some great cd's there have ordered mine & looking forward to the new year & the Phiily releases. Well done Ian
Ian Dewhirst Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Ditto, the whole series to date has been hammered in the Price Family Bus, particularly the Hampsey ones which are mighty fine. Well, that's what they were designed for Theresa. I must admit that Surrey housewives weren't the key target group. Most of the Surrey housewives around here seem to have a penchant for singing "I'm Every Woman" or "I Will Survive" at any given opportunity, but mostly when they go out en mass...... But otherwise, absolutely! All Backbeats albums are suitable for family buses on school runs or supermarket trips. They're designed to make normal life just a little more liveable Really looking forward to these new ones - Ian are there any *ahem* 'review' copies for impoverished Surrey housewives? Hee hee. Promise I'll buy some as well as Chrissy pressies for the Sarf Larndon Massive. What's the deal here Theresa? You get treated better than the majority of my personal concubine and favourite geishas, yet I'm not even sure if we've ever met LOL. OK, you can choose 2 on the basis of advance promotion via the Price Family Bus OK? If you like 'em, then you're bound to yap about 'em aren'tcha? That's cos he's a Capricorn They make lots of lists. Yep, I know the type LOL. Sean's the only compiler who regularly moans because the sleeve notes aren't long enough! I'm gonna let him go nuts on the Backbeats Artists series next year LOL.... Cheers m'dear. Here's to some exhilerating bus journeys in the near future! Ian D X

You know it makes sense Ian, just think how costly it could be if we were better acquainted! Best just keep me at arms length by tossing me a copy of everything you put out, before I start asking for a monthly clothes allowance, Maserati, and a serviced apartment at Chelsea Harbour, lol. I'll take the two Hampsey ones please, 027 & 030, thanks honey

Christ, she'd have been even more costly than that Brazilian ball of fire who wanted a boob job back in '87...... Brilliant advice! Thanks a bunch lass. Saved me a whole heap of stress. That's Theresa's a piece of work isn't she.......? Ian D

Can you suggest any Mod forums that may be interested in 'Mod Life Crisis', 'Lost In Time' and some of the others? You could PM if you do....... Cheers, Ian D I'm not allowed to play on mod forums any more Ian. I invariably point out a couple of things, get into arguments with people, and then get banned.... modculture.com and modforum.org are two of the many I'm not allowed back on any more ;-) and seem the busiest. Sometimes I wonder why Scootering still employs me, I've pished off an awful lot of people.
Guest ScooterNik Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 BTW I can see them all going well across the scooter scene except maybe the Smooth, Philly Busters and Deep collections, and even there you'll find the odd people who'd enjoy them. The others would sell though, more traditional looking than those.
Guest soulpeeper Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 The Philly one looks really nice particularly with the Don Covay tuneTravellin in Heavy traffic on it. First time ive seen this on cd. Superb arrangement from an epic philly era.I have always loved this. My brother had this tune and it takes me back to school days. theres a great hook in the chorus line and its Probably my favourite ever philly outing.. the words of the song with Don pickin up a prostitiute in his car and battling with his feelings with what is about to happen is first class. and a great groove. Check it.

The others would sell though, more traditional looking than those. The interesting thing about the Backbeats series, is that the differential between the top-selling ones and the least selling ones actually isn't that great at all luckily. With this new bunch, it's pretty much all Soul across the 60's-80's so they're slightly easier to target plus that's the general direction that the series seems to be going in anyway. We managed to avoid doing any Disco, Jazz, Hip-Hop, House or Garage in this lot although there's been a bit of righteous indignation from none-Soul quarters.......... Ian D
Guest ScooterNik Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Righteous indignation is cool, it's bullshit indignation that annoys me.... Oh, and it's usually laughing at people with modern scooters dressed up like 60s machines, who won't see past half a dozen bands (Usually The Who, The Jam, Small Faces, The Kinks, Secret Affair and The Lambrettas), who don't want the mod scene to move forward - it was originally a very forward looking scene ffs! - who get me into trouble. Doesn't bother me, they're too narrow minded for me anyway. This is probably the only music forum where I've never got into arguments with anyone, I know when people know more than I do :-) If
