Paulb Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 (edited) When do you personally think it will be time to call it a day on the scene. In 10 years time a few of you old gets will be nearly 60 . Do you think all nighters will be be an option then or will the time come to pick up the snooker cue and head for the club. Surly dancing all night at that age will prob not be the best idea unless promoters have bouncers and st johns ambulance crew ready! Is northern soul something you can just give up? title amended. Paulb Posted November 17, 2005 Author Posted November 17, 2005 Think ill stop going when the dance floor becomes dotted in patches of piss. Ill finally have to except that a younger crowd aren't going to get into it then.
Reg Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Went to the Trafford Centre on Tuesday and, whilst we sat having a bite to eat there was a tea dance going on-band playing and loads of old folks dancing away doing the foxtrot etc. Is that what we've got to look forward to? Shufflng away to mid tempo being watched by burger munchers?
Guest Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 If we look after ouselves and keep fit there's no reason why we can't still be dancing well into our twilight years

Guest Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 I'm not saying I don't want to die or live really long.. but I don't want to die on the dance floor from a heart attack simply because I'm a fat heffer who ate all the pies and drank bar dry Still, what I would like to be and what I actually am are a world apart LOL
Soulsmith Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Northern Soul has been associated with terminal decline since 1979. But as Mark Twain said "Rumours of my death have been greatly exagerated" KTF Col

Guest Dodger Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Has anyone actually died dancing I've seen a few DJ's die an embarassing death over the years!! I think the time to pack it in is when you stop enjoying it. Quite simple really.

Well Im 64 and can still make it onto a dance floor for most of the night, and sometimes into the early hours. There are still people around over 60 who can still do a bit. If you look after yourself and stay DANCE FIT theres no reason to take up snooker when your 60. Never known anybody die on a Northern Soul Dance Floor yet. Could be I will be the first! What a way to be remembered that would be. If you need any tips on how to keep going, let me know. Denis. title amended. Shane

Guest Matt Male Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 I had a break from the scene and came back, and i can't see myself giving it up again ever. Usually it's big life changes or responsibility that make people pack it it, but I'm married, got a mortgage and two kids under five, so responsibility wise i'm up to the hilt. Things can only get easier life-wise so i can't see me stopping going soul nights and nighter. How long will i last? Who knows? I'm 39, so another 40 years? Matt
Guest Matt Male Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Has anyone actually died dancing Quite seriously the answer is sadly yes. I can't remember her name (wish i could) but i saw a girl collapse on the dance floor at Leicester Oddfellows in the 80s, and i'm sure i heard afterwards she'd died. At the Leicester reunion a few years back someone recalled her name and confirmed she'd died. Sorry if this was just a rumour.
Little-stevie Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Who knows..It depends what you call the scene or music..So many different types of stuff....60s northern will have quite a bit of fresh blood/younger people to keep it going but not on the scale of today..It would be a smaller underground scene...The scene at the moment,10 years tops i would say but who knows??????many of us are around the late 30s/early 40s and not thinking of tea dances and wheel chair ramps for a good while..

There were a number of deaths year's back, think it may have been Wakefield. More to do with what they'd taken than just the dancing. Though I'm sure they'd had a dance as well. Some of the above could be labelled as ageist as Soul music lovers do not fade away or die some of us will still love the music no matter were we fall in and pay our 2 bob. But save a thought for that nice DJ Derek Allen who passed away at a northern event shame on you we are not all gets and some of us know what it means. At the Leicester reunion a few years back someone recalled her name and confirmed she'd died. Sorry if this was just a rumour. Sorry missed this young lady in Leicester, no disrespect intended. I always remember Derek Allan as a man playing great dance music, not as a dancer. So again, no disrespect intended. As far as I am aware, the Lancashire and Yorkshire fatalities had nothing to do with dancing. The staff at the Casino, called it the Tommy Simpson method. Cheers Simsy. bloody hell Ian, since when has passing on your views been "whinging" ask to post comments on moderation/site stuff there for the following reasons 1. its easier to spot and be aware and so can answer/act on the points 2. it avoids threads getting bogged down with moderators answering such posts 3 could be a handy reference, anyone who has any concerns, questions, complaints or such can at least check if the subject has been mentioned there 4. avoids people passing on the wrong info about site as has been done in the past, not trying to be funny like, but people dont just moderate on here cause got nothing better to do all moderators have voluntered to moderate, the idea of ALL moderation is to keep soul source - worthwhile and enjoyable when do post up request such as asking to post q's on moderating in site stuff, it is for a reason and to be honest to see such requests ignored and passed off as whinging does jack me off at times again I ask - please post any questions on moderation in the Site Stuff Forum https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showforum=8 Edited November 18, 2005 by mike-

Yes i remember Jayne as well, the thing that still send a slight shiver down my spine is the conversation we had in the Ladies at the Oddfellows, the night it happened, i hadnt seen Jayne for a while and i asked her where had she been, "I've been dead" she replied, to which i asked her "well are you making a ghost appearance then???!!!", we both laughed at this point,it was unbelieveable what occurred later and you are right, lovely lovely girl Del x
