Guest Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 John Finch, owner of Finch Records from Cincinnati, Ohio died last Thursday. Finch was an amazing independent label in Cincinnati which saw releases from The Five Chances, Albert Washington, The Bees (featuring a young Sugarfoot Bonner), and many other blues, gospel and r&b acts. Iceburg Sad news. I managed to pick up an unreleased acetate that came from him, through a Cincinnati collector a while back. Good version of "A Hundred Pounds Of Clay" by The Five Chances.

Iceburg I believe he would have been around 82 years of age, according to Scott Cheesebrew ,whom I purchased a Five Chances from ,that he sourced from Mr Finch last year.Scotts article about him makes great reading.Condolences to his family.
Guest Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Does anyone have Scott's info?? Had his number in my old cell, which was destroyed. Would definitely like to get in touch with him again.... Sad news indeed. When Scott went around to their house early last year and went through the remaining stock, they couldn't the Five Chances disc anywhere, then right at the end his wife pulled down an old tin from a kitchen shelf and there inside were 3 mint copies. With the 6 or 7 other copies all in average condition, this is a very rare 45. The manual label listings found by Scott revealed another release on the label (not the Chances other release but a different group) that is thought to be a killer northern track. I think Scott may still have the details, but it is certainly not known to any collectors in the US. The black and red audiodisc acetate of the Five Chances '100lb of Clay' is good Northern Harmony cut, I have the other copy by the way. Unpolished, but very good.

Here I am, finally signed up for this forum. Really sad about Mr. Finch, I am currently seeking out all the legal info to do a proper re-iss of the Finch material for a CD. Should prove to be quite the project. Anyone interested in hearing more about John Finch and his incredible story feel free to ask questions, I will try to help =)
