As i'm aware the soul scene as become very splintered

there is not 1 venue where we can't get it together and have good time tonight to listen, dance & socialise.

To Funky northern,RnB northern uptempo Xover, rare northern and not forgetting good upbeat modern krap including soulful house

Not the tailor mades like Tribute.tribute to betty &smile

As i'm in my early 5ts i went to the late wigan 79/80 and funk was played along side northern anthems of the time. I also djd at the Keele allnighter modern room the last 3yrs before it finished

There are a lot of soulies out who want to go out but won't because there is to many oldies & same old same olds being played

I wish that promoters to be little bid more adventurous and give a more progessive dj a chance at there venues

It's soul music i love you love it let's get the scene Buzziing again with new tunes.?

Were in the 2nd decade of the 21st century come let's have good time don't let it Die.

Always been an advocate of everything under one roof although I must say, I'm jaded at the moment and can't be arsed with the retro side of things. I'm sure if it moved on, featured all aspects... northern, ballads, modern, soulful house and indeed the "new" funk side of things it would make it more interesting for everyone apart from those set in their ways. Love it all and that's the way it should be, after all, it's all soulful whether it's to your taste per individual record or not.

Welcome, I think you'll fit right in, although there are already a few moanin Kev's on here already. So you might have to change your name.

How about miserable Kev?

As for the places that play progressive and adventurous sounds I think there are plenty of places around like that. I think it's never been more varied with something for everyone across the country.

I didn't really mean ATB because that usually just means across the board oldies to me thesedays. I'm not too bothered about hearing every genre under the same roof, i'd rather they were either new to my ears or rarely played out.

Kev, welcome to soul source.

hi matt

that's we all want but in the main rooms not in little pokey rooms with no atmosphere & no punters in

kev

Kev, if what you wished for filled main rooms would it not follow that that would be the order of the day?

Not saying what should or shouldn't be the policy of any particular night, as Matt has pointed out you can find whatever you want if you look for it, but if you want a night to play to your tastes instead of what works that venue then ya gonna be moanin indefinitely I reckon,

The "scene" as it is at the moment is doing just about ok without the need for a massive rethink on music policy...especially for an "ATB" policy as it does not and would not work UNLESS your talking an atb policy of northern soul i.e. Oldies/Rarer Under played/New 6T's discoveries (if they are any good and not just new and rare as this does not mean that they are any good) with a mix of R&B and some of the Funk stuff that the likes of Mick "H" can spin.

All of the above can and have in years past lived in the same room, but it has to be what we all would deem to be "northern" otherwise you can shove it!!

very strange set up this northern soul thing ,Loughboro' last night great night two rooms small room R-N-B , early soul reggae and ska some fantastic records played in that room last night and that room will develop over the next year or so.Main room was last night oldies and nighter spins , BUT 4 danced to Gwen Owens 4 Danced to the Deadbeats 6 to Robbie Lawson 5 to the Profesionals ect ect so what do people want ? a girl said to me at the bar she prefered real oldies and not "this new stuff " refering to records like I just mentioned .This is why I prefer the small alternative rooms and Modern nights regards Simon.

sorry julie but have to dissagree slightly......pilsley is a totally across the board night...in fact barry insists his residents play acroos the board and his guests usually do the same....most across the board events up your way have mainly oldies djs with maybe a guest spinner that can throw a few motown, rnb or modern tunes in...which imvho isnt across the board

ive looked at playlists from many events on here claiming to be ATB but the truth is they just aint

as is always the case these are MY views only

Hi ,could you clarify ATB please.Does it mean a total mix of genres and era's,regardless of any history attached to the "scene".?

Or,across a particular genre..ie: r'n'b from 50's to late 60's,different tempo's etc.?

Kev.(representing the positive Kev's).

for me the term atb means...6ts,7ts,modern,motown,rare and underplayed, crossover plus maybe latin and funky type stuff

this may not be everybodys view but it is mine

atb....down but not out moldie...well not yet anyway

Not been to bed yet Moldie,so bear with me.Surely if a dj tries too hard to cram in too many genres as you describe all in one set,it can get a bit disjointed for the dancefloor?

depends how long the sets are id say. seems like most of your venues are hung up with hour slots.

give a decent dj a few hours straight to play about and assuming the audience are open minded enough (40 or under or not British as an example ) its a fairly exciting and interesting outcome.

I find the highlighted element of your post rather odd. There are plenty of progressive nights/nighters to choose from. I only attend progressive events and my diary's always full.

Which progressive DJ do you want a chance to be given to?

Across The Board means from the 60's to present day whatever genre and not many venues cater for that...if any, that is a fact. Most that advertise ATB (especially soul nights) are oldies with a bit of Angie Stone or records that sound Northern thrown in and stray little from the well trodden path.

Will never work here, too much baggage and too much emphasis on venues of the past and too few people willing to show some tolerance and patience and open their ears to something new.

Not everywhere in Europe is a mixture of genres but those that are don't have the history that holds back the UK Rare Soul Scene, it's simply soul music to them whatever genre and they couldn't care less where fit was first played. There was records played by Arthur last night that are massive in Europe, Butch said you can't get on the floor when they are played, here they clear the floor.

Can't we just call it a Rare Soul Scene with Rare Soul Nights/Nighters? Time the tags and genres were done away with, it just holds the scene back.

I agree Chalky. We could call ATB nights rare soul nights. But they are'nt the same thing are they?

I don't claim to be anything....If I saw what you wrote or something similar on a flyer I would take it to be an oldies night, simple as that. The majority don't want across the board, 60's to the present day, that is a fact.

Rare Soul is just that to me whatever the year.

Agree with what you are saying & know where you are coming from Chalky but if you truly want to embrace all era's & genre's of the Soul scene I think the rare tag needs dropping.

so if i did a flyer with the word MODERN on it then it would suggest to you it was an OLDIES night

have you spoken to the majority? cos youve certainly never spoken to me

why not let ppl decide for themselves what they want....too many ppl on here telling others what they should or shouldnt be listening too.....not aimed at you

I would probably assume they would be 70's northern unless a recognised out and out modern soul DJ on the line up.

People are free to listen to and go where they please, can't force anyone to go anywhere, but there is too much talk from many on here who profess to be supporters of more progressive music policies, from 60's through the decades who fail to follow up what they say.

I simply used the "rare" tag to differentiate it from the more mainstream club soul. Maybe a more apt name can be dreamt up :D
