Pete S Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 This name always fascinated me, The Soul Cop, anyway I found this article on him but in it, it says one of his records made Number 8 on the UK charts, I know I am often forgetful but does anyone remember this, or did they just make it up? https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1798&dat=19760910&id=loI0AAAAIBAJ&sjid=c44EAAAAIBAJ&pg=6809,1924340

Russ Vickers Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 'Unsatisfied Man' for me, tremendous slab of funky soul, with the emphasis on the SOUL......needs playing too. Best Russ
Mister Fish Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 'Unsatisfied Man' for me, tremendous slab of funky soul, with the emphasis on the SOUL......needs playing too. Best Russ 'Dissastified man' is a corker played by Keb at early funk events. "too many nights' is also a lovely if not dancey tune.
Pete S Posted October 28, 2011 Author Posted October 28, 2011 Kinnell can anyone answer the original question?
Simon T Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 What was the UK label? Or was it imported in large numbers, if so, in several 1000's to sell enough copies to reach No 8 in the national chart surely? I suspect it was No 8 in the 'UK Oliver Christian Appreciation Society's - The Soul Cop top 10 chart' for 1976. The only tenuous thing I found, was that it was produced by Frank Guida who produced Gary U.S. Bonds' "A Quarter to Three" a U.S. No 1 & U.K. No 7 but that was 1961. Still it wouldn't be the first artist to honestly believed they had had great chart success in the UK chart, but hadn't!
Russ Vickers Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Kinnell can anyone answer the original question? No I cant sorry, but hoped the 'Dissatisfied Man' post would be of interest . Best Russ
Russ Vickers Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 (edited) Slightly off topic, so apologies, but any excuse to post a cracking tune that deserves some needle time..........when I lived in VA, I went to the same dealer, at the same Flea Market nearly every weekend for 3 years, there was never anything there at all & I mean nothing, to be honest it became a routine, mainly cos my family wont get at of bed untill noon on a weekend, so it was summat to do & vey local. The very last Sunday before we flew home to the UK for good, as usual I woke early & thought I would continue my routine with the FM, but then I thought sh*t, its a waste of time I wont bother, better things to do, packing etc........,a little later, bored thought, bugger it why not ?, ................found 3 copies of Oliver Christian DM & paid less than 5 bucks for the lot.....same guy, same FM, same stock as always, but for those 3 records..........unbeleivable...........traded 2, kept one & if memory serves me right the one I kept is a slightly different font to the regular issues, they also all have a stamp saying 'free', does anyone else have this with the 'stamp' ?. Typically, the copy I kept developed a one or 2 rev tick, very slight, but annoying all the same. Anyway, sorry to go off topic & go on a bit, but thought it might be of interest. Guest Marky Tee Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Waddya ya think of DM in the clip ?. Best Russ If you had asked an hour ago Russ I would have said not impressed, but played it a few times and it's growing on me. I suppose that's what music's all about. Could see myself dancing to it.
Russ Vickers Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Nice one mate, glad you gave it a chance.....thank you. Best Russ
Guest Marky Tee Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Nice one mate, glad you gave it a chance.....thank you. Best Russ I am nothing if not open to new sounds mate.
Shinehead Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Frank Guida i assume was the the same guy that produced the northern record Just Ask Me by Lenis Guess. Think the piece about Oliver Christian having a pop hit in Britain is untrue.
Russ Vickers Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Yep, JAM was a FG release, Legrand was also one of FG labels.....the store & studio in Norfolk VA were near to Howard Biggs Shiptown studio/store set up was on Gramby Street, think it was GS, minds a bit messed up this afternoon.......all that talent on the same street !!!. When FG store closed in the early 8ts, I have it on good authority that the stock was given away on the street, what didnt go on the street was taken to the local thrift store & there was lots of it. I was told there were multiple boxes of Oliver Christian......the person I knew got a few boxes, I asked if he still had them, but they were thrown out when he moved years ago. Best Russ
Corbett80 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Love Oliver Christian - fab record! Does need playing more for sure!
