While we're on the subject (sort of) I was recently charged $22.50 (US) for posting five 45s (with a total sale price of $19.95) from Adeaide to the UK. I thought it was way OTT on the part of the seller, but when the package arrive the postage fell just a few cents short of that and I would imagine that the seller actually ran at a loss by the time she'd bought a brand new mailer to put around the cardboard mailer that was inside the envelope.

How one earth can the Australian Post Office get away with charging that much for a small and not particularly heavy package, such as this one was?

2 pounds fifty sounds average. it generally is more if you use those thick cardboard sleeve with card inside. andfrom the states usually around 7 dollars, although i have been charged 15 dollars by greedy people before with a bunch of lame excues. for "signed for" to usa cost me 12.50. it is cheaper if you use the cardboard envelope style and the two cards. and just as strong. reason being if the package doesnt go through a particular size slot it then goes up into parcel rate from letter which is what happens to those fold over packets, i know this may sound anal but sometimes when the sides over lap and are sellotped down....this is what does it. believe me its not the sending thats the only problem. my postie just tosses them over the wall if he is driving by, and three days in the sun and rain aint good, i found a one in a bush with a date 2 months prior. although some twat must have know this and sent me a cracked record and accused me of breaking it. so always opt for the best packing you can. any one got a willie hutch issue for sale or a yum yum issue
