Would This Be Acceptable?

I love this bit....

"would that be acceptable as long as I held each record up as it was playing?"

HAHA! Good question, I look forward to seeing replies from all the usual suspects!

Would you be digitising your 45s straight to the iPod or on to a computer first?

If the latter, then I'm afraid there is a problem. When transferring a file from your computer to the iPod, you are in fact making a copy of the original. This means that the iPod files are reissues.

As we all know, the Soul Police frown upon 2nd issues, repressings, call them what you will.

Not convinced that the ones on your iPod are reissues? Consider - when you transfer the file to your iPod, you have the song on this device and the original on your hard drive. Admittedly it's very hard to tell them apart, especially as no matrix numbers are to be found in the run-out grooves of either, and John Manship has yet to publish his digital bootlegs and repressings guide, but the Soul Police can always tell.

It's almost like bootlegging your own 45s, but bootlegging them for yourself! And that will never do!!

Having said that, forward looking and more technologically minded soulies - particularly those who are a bit business savvy - will soon start swapping, buying and selling these files.

Eventually this will lead to the development of the Northern Soul ODO market - Original Digital Only.

Already happening.

This is the fold away stand where you present the record in front of the decks.......

If I recorded all my originals on to my ipod and then played them at a venue that had one of these, would that be acceptable as long as I held each record up as it was playing?

Why go to all the trouble of buying that bit of kit, there is an App that you can down load to you iphone or ipad that give you two turn tables, mixer, crossfading and a whole bunch more....

Very true - I did a podcast using the ipad 2 recently, was ill in bed and basically you just load up the tracks and it does it for you

think of all the requests you could fit into 1 hour of djn (100s) no need to carry 800 records around with you any more

No, you're missing the point, you would still have to carry the records. If you can't show the records you could have recorded somebody else's records or even from a boot.

What's an iphone? I have a nokia that still works as well as when I got it in 2001 - i think I can play mp3s on it but have never tried. I did have The Four Tops - Reach Out as a ring tone until it rang when I was on the train and the whole carriage joined in.

..and would it be ok to run the shazam app while you're playing Paul.?

The only Shazam that I know was the thing that flashed on the screen at ABC minors when that bloke changed into Captain Marvel (or summat). We all used to flip the folding seats back up and start kicking the bottom - it made a hell of a row when the whole cinema did it. The bloke in the dickie bow would turn up and sling you out if he caught you doing it though (err... kicking the seat that is)

Don't forget that with tracks you can upload artwork/images to your iPod. All you need do is wave that at the crowd and there's the proof. Of course, with the majority of punters being old timers these days, they may have a problem seeing such small images without specs on.

But hey, that'll give the moaners something new to go on about :D

Yeah, but surely you could take a digital photo of you holding the label next to a newspaper with the appropriate date on and then project that photo onto the wall behind the i-pod unit couldn't you? Thus proving to everyone that you have the record but you just couldn't be arsed lugging it to the venue............

But then you'd be lugging a projector unit etc, and, heaven forbid, you could have borrowed the record just for the photo, and not actually own it!

Good fun thread this!

I went to a "soul" do at the start of this year where the guys had decent turntables wired up to mixer and a Mac with some software (name of which escapes me) and screen showed both turntables, mixer, track listings etc etc....On the decks were what looked like records, but must've been digital discs of some sort, with digital stylus to pick up tracking so that they could use decks to mix and adjust pitch / stop & start tracks etc.

All very clever I suppose and I'm not being critical, but but I thought...what's the point?! If you're prepared to lug that lot about and pay a good few quid for the kit, surely just also bring a couple boxes of records or CD's and be done with, after all there was nothing rare / expensive / hard to find being played!

Steve

Actually there is a better model, you only need one ipod:

post-2247-0-48762600-1319618500_thumb.jp

Looks nice, it's even got sliders so you can pretend you're actually DJing instead of being just a glorified jukebox.

What about just copy and past top dj's playlist, show a picture on a screen but don't bother inviting them!!! Ok that would be bootleggin dj's playlist, so what about streaming a random dj actually playing those records at home on original vinyl but listinging miles away at an allnighter or even at home!!!!! Ok that would be almost like radio!!! OK I am lost now. Ahhh f*ck it I'll stick to ovo

if you could be a jukebox what jukebox would you want to be, i always wanted a wurlitzer but not right for 60/70s records so i would now rather be a lookalikey (boot) digital wurlitzer thingy :D

Would it be just acceptable to sing each track and do away with the equipment - i could hold the record up as i sang?

i would pay to go watch a load of djs sing it over the mic instead of playing it, what a bloomin laugh that would be

I'm pretty sure a lot of them don't have much of a voice to begin with! The local cats would be having a field day :D
